"A Winter's Tale" is a song by Queen, from the album Made in Heaven, released in 1995 after Freddie Mercury's death in 1991. It was written during the sessions from the album Innuendo, inspired as Mercury was staring out the windows of their recording studio, at Lake Geneva. The song has a psychedelic, dreamy feel, and describes what Mercury saw outside the windows.
It was said to have been recorded 2 weeks before Mercury's death. He wrote, composed, and did the vocals and keyboards for it. In the documentary "Queen - Champions of The World," it was stated that this was if not the first then an extremely rare style of recording for Freddie, as it was all performed in one take live in the studio. It was stated in the film that Freddie had always insisted upon music being completed prior to the vocal arrangement beginning, but acknowledged that he had little time left and there was not enough time to have it completed in time.
The song was released as the second single from the album. In the UK the single was also available in a special limited edition green paper CD case which resembled Christmas wrapper.
The music video, produced after his death, was an epitaph, as Mercury's actual written song notes were displayed alongside imagery and clips of Mercury's past performances.

There never has been a voice like Freddie’s before or after his death. Miss you Freddie Darling. Queen without Freddie isn’t the same. They just don’t make music like they did when Freddie was alive. Am I the only one who thinks the world has truly gone downhill since he died?

Seeing so much beauty while he was experiencing the ugliness of what his illness was bringing to him. The very reason why he could write beautiful lyrics in his songs--his inner self was beautiful as well. Incredible human. He deserves to be a legend. The way he sang, "so beeea-uuu-tiful" was just BEAUTIFUL and touching.

i really remember this song as my wife was in hospital because we lost our baby at 6 month's and i remember this playing on the radio as i was driving home crying. when i got home i bought the album next day and put this track on again. this still makes me cry but at the same time it's is such a beautiful song. miss you baby xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx daddy

I can't begin to convey the feeling I get when I listen to this masterpiece. My heart aches when I think of Freddie singing this beautiful song and how he must have been feeling with his illness. I want to thank "Queen" for keeping his memory alive and sharing their memories with all of us. This song is so special , I can close my eyes, DREAM and listen to this over and over again. Hopefully Freddie is in a better place with no more pain. Thank you Queen

Jeepergirl I totally agree. I love, love this song. And what a tribute to Freddie that he could be so ill yet perform so beautifully. I only very recently come to be truly aware of Queen. Country girl back then with country music. But not I listen to Queen and Freddie every day. This song multiple times daily.

This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard, to think that Freddie was so ill, but he still had that magical voice, & the lyrics, they make my eyes fill with tears, I have all the music they ever recorded. When I think how much you suffered, you were so brave, thank God that he put you on this earth, but sadly for only a short time, we all miss you, Freddie. RIP. ♥
