Quarrymen 1958 Maggie Mae

Музыка

"Maggie May" (or "Maggie Mae") is a traditional Liverpool folk song about a prostitute who robbed a "homeward bounder": a sailor coming home from a round trip. It´s from about 19th century.
John Manifold, in his Penguin Australian Song Book, described it as "A foc'sle song of Liverpool origin apparently, but immensely popular among seamen all over the world".[2] It became widely circulated in a skiffle version from the late 1950s.
The Quarrymen used to play it in 1957-58 performances.
A brief extract was performed by the Beatles in a joking manner during their Get Back sessions 1969. In early 1969, at a point in the proceedings when they were warming up in the studio by playing old rock and roll and skiffle songs that they had known and played in their teenage years. They adopt heavy scouse accents for the performance. Though the performance was obviously tongue-in-cheek, a truncated version of it was included on the 1970 album drawn from those sessions, Let It Be, appearing as the last track on the LP's first side, immediately after the title song.
The background sound is from Nowhere Boy soundtrack (all rights reserved)
Here I´ve intended to show a possible rendition with the same gear they used to play in 1957-58.

- Zenith 17 (Paul)
- Hofner President (George)

You should look at Percy Philips recordings in a small back room of an Electrical supply shop in Kensington Liverpool....a huge amount of recording were done there....from Billy Fury to Ken Dodd...many more and the Quarrymen....his grandson Pete Philips ...still has a lot of the original acetates and tapes etc....and the appointment books and receipts of comings and goings.....I remember seeing one where the Quarrymen didnt pay their bill and that's how Pete inherited the accetates. Iv'e played with Pete a lot ...he's a great drummer and percussionist....anyway...just a bit of history.....Im sure this recording was done in that old back room ....
