Quantum Job Hunting: More Things You NEED to Know

Ғылым және технология

Hunting for a job in quantum computing can be confusing. Luckily, Dr. Olivia Lanes is back with more insider tips and tricks to help you find the right role. And this time she's joined by Abby Mitchell, Developer Advocacy Lead at IBM Quantum.
Join them as they search across LinkedIn and explain how to tell a good vs bad posting, break down the skills employers are looking for, give an overview of roles and the degrees required, and share stories of their own experiences.

FYI: @14:00 Quantum Treasury Consultant is **not** a quantum technology related job. "Quantum" is the name of enterprise-level Treasury Management [risk management] application software. The company is simply looking for a user of a classical-software system. In the description, the company really should be capitalizing the word "quantum." This posting may very well have been created/enhanced by an AI tool; it looks to have popped in the last bullet point as it was confused, just as our hosts in this one case.

The advertisement includes terms like "quantum computing" and "quantum algorithms". I think you're right about the software existing, but I'm not confident that this advertisement is referring to that.

Well I wonder if I should apply for the 1st position, 30 years in ASIC, FPGA, Error Correction codes, Wavelets, DSP, hardware and software engineer, processor architect, logic, circuit, and mask designer, project lead, compiler writing Verilog to C, GUI design. Even wrote the VLSI CAD tool I used on a couple of those chips I layed out. Since I never worked on qubits, guess I won't bother, but I remember following IBM doing JJ superconducting work 40 years ago in college before they dropped out of that. That would have been good experience for qubit work today. Nah, last time I interviewed I bet they thought I was making it all up, too many acronyms in resume, nobody can know all of the stuff I worked on. Ended up getting treated like an idiot by HR people, probably too old as well. I even own 1000+ engineering text books covering 20 fields, what am I to do with them all, put them in the dumpster. can't even give them away to a top US university either. My library was vastly better than theirs, which I found rather shocking. Great video though, have been watching a few of Dr Olivia Lanes videos now. I am curious about whether 1000 qubits could do something more general like compiling code, more likely always restricted to hard math problems like code breaking. Some of the qubit chip elements don't look that different than the 40 year old JJ chips.

If you’ve really done all that then working with qubits shouldn’t be all that hard. Just basic linear algebra from what I’ve seen. Less complicated than DSP unless you get into the physics. I’m looking into going into embedded software, so if you don’t mind me asking, have you found that kind of work intellectually interesting?

Hello! I'm a UX designer with filmmaking and art background wondering if there are any opportunities in IBM quantum at this stage of the game for designers. I'm extremely fascinated by this field, learning everything that I can and this channel has been amazing inspiring me to start learning coding specifically for this reason. I have been actively following the job listings on linkedin, however, understandably besides developer or academic roles, there are not a lot of options. I wonder if you could please give some advice how can I find my way into quantum as a designer passionate about intuitive design as well as user interviews before I kickstart my technical skills. Thank you so much ❤

About entanglement, has it been considered that particles may be fixed together? Could it be a moving tablecloth principle? If you pull on a tablecloth, it moves at exactly the same time, so faster than the speed of light. But the result on each end of the table is the opposite. At the same time. Any point on the table cloth will always have a fixed position, but since the cloth is moving, it looks like a wave. If you look at the points from a slightly different angle (eg 60 degrees) the results may not be 100% of the time + | -, because with changing angle, you can come at + | + or - | - too. So that would mean that the particles would somehow be fixed and not free as is assumed.

Pulling on a tablecloth doesnt have all parts moving at the same time - there are no rigid bodies in special relativity. The rest of your comment makes no sense.
