Quantopian Retro E1: The Dan Whitnable Interview

Welcome to the Quantopian Retro, a short series of interviews of Quantopian teammates, community members, and outside quants/experts. The goal of the series is to look back on Quantopian and reflect on what went right, what went wrong, and what we can learn from it all.
This episode is with Dan Whitnable, erstwhile head of community at Quantopian. Dan was an engineer and started using Quantopian for his own trading. Over time, he became a major contributor to the Quantopian user forums and eventually joined Quantopian to work with the community full time. Dan has a unique mix of internal and external perspectives on Quantopian. I hope everyone enjoys his insights as much as I did.

I used Quantopian to backtest a few ideas and also explored the forum to see if others had tried variations of these ideas, which they had. I didn't participate in the competitions because my strategy are Martingale, and these didn't score well despite having multi years Sharpe ratio higher than 2. I keep trading the strategy till this day. The product, Quantopian API, was really well built and polished. Fawce, it's truly remarkable that you recorded the retrospective process-a rarity in itself-and then made the videos publicly available, an unprecedented move.
It was incredible to have access to Dan Whitnable knowledge at that time on an individual basis. He gave us clear explanations and was always very patient with those who were just starting out on the platform. But it was these explanations that made me jump into the world of finance with Python. Just as a newsletter and interview series, for now…
The 'alignment problem' I agree with. Searching for new species that look like unicorns is spot on!. I had capital and time and needed better coding skills (they are better now). The data plus back-testing platform and community I would gladly have paid for that. Nothing even close exists even today (sorry Alpaca). Maybe ally with IB and reboot? (Francis in NYC)
