QUAKE 4: The Dark Age of Id Software

Ойындар

QUAKE 4 was the final Quake singleplayer game ever released, with Quake Live and Quake Champions continuing on from Quake 3 Arena. As a Quake 2 sequel, Quake 4 got a mixed reception by Quake fans and was released during The Dark Age of Id Software after Doom 3. This is the final chapter of this Quake retrospective, as we look back at the LEGACY of Quake 4. #Quake #Quake4 #IdSoftware

The stroggification scene is still one of the most brutal things I have ever seen in a video game. I would like to point out that they do a _little_ bit with the partial-Strogg in the narrative. After the process, you start to be able to read the Strogg language on display panels and understand the Strogg gurgles over the PA system. IDK why hive-mind Borg clones _need_ PA systems, but hey, it's there.

Superficially that sounds like a reasonable idea but in practice it's not. Doom and Quake were quite distinct games initially because they were created using unique technology. Those days are a very long way in the past so all we're left with is a differing art style. There's more mileage in playing Q1 using one of the updated engines or a mod like the fantastic Arcane Dimensions

Bruh, I literally just picked this game up on Christmas. One interesting thing I noticed right off the bat was that on the Xbox 360 (on mine, at least), it features a really choppy frame rate and you get to fight alongside Medics and Engineers. Kinda like Half-Life: Opposing Force. Other than that, I'm having a ton of fun with this. Cool review!

Fun fact, if you play those sections not in HD (360 version), the frame drops are nowhere near as egreduous. I remember people talking about the framedrops at the time and specifically thinking they were being highly exaggerated.. Until I replayed in HD a few years ago. Yeah they were telling the truth, the drops are waay more noticeable. XD (curiously there are other fairly random scenarios like this that I remember eg. people were saying tomb raider legend on PS3 had more preferable textures in 480p than 720p for some reason . I sometimes wonder how many other of these situations there were/are.)

You didn't mentioned that after the Stroggification you can now use wall brains as a healing station, which are present even on earliest levels (before you become a Strogg) Also, nailgun is the best weapon in the game in term of DPS/ROF when fully modified, not to mention it's lock-on mode BTW, you can destroy Gladiator's railgun (as well as disable his shield with LG) and Light Tank's flame cannon so they can't use it against you. Sounds familiar, huh?

I remember being blown away by the graphics at the time. I turned them up until it was a slideshow on my PC and in the opening you could count the hairs on the dead Marines head! The other thing was the brutality of the story. Your protagonist is torn apart and (almost) converted into a Strogg! It was a brilliant, unexpected twist. Is Quake 4 the best Quake? No, but it wasn't bad for a single player, story driven, FPS of the time.

The Strogg transformation scene reminds me of BJ being weakened and requiring power armour to even walk for the first half or so of Wolfenstein 2 due to the ending of New Order, until his attempted execution whereupon his still living head is saved after decapitation and grafted onto a super soldier body, which is weird as how despite not having played it yet I knew about Quake 4 and that scene first.

I didn't like those parts either. The part where you operate the "mech suit" is OK... not great, not terrible, lol. But I found the hover tank difficult to maneuver and hard to aim, and in the part where someone else drives and you just operate the machinegun, it's very hard to aim while the vehicle is moving. The game could do without any of those parts.

I pretty agree with ClassicShooters. They were pretty damn well paced, not too hard at all and it kinda felt that you were going somewhere on your mission, instead of traditional "I'll press button and enter another world" stuff. Plus they kinda ended when you began to get into it. In my books that's perfect pacing if you cut the scene when it begins to feel repetitive. For Diego C. that was in my opinion exactly well made. You had mech suit and it was changed to vehicles so it didn't feel exactly same. I didn't even have problems with those turret sections, though they could've been tad shorter sequences.

Funny, I just picked this up on Steam last weekend on a whim for some classic FPS nostalgia. I'm glad to see you giving it a fair assessment as its own game separate from the rest of the franchise. Playing it for what it was without expectations, I had a good time. It didn't blow me away, but it was fun and responsive and the feeling of being caught up in a war with an alien species went over pretty well. The biggest disappointment is that the Strogg story line (starting with Quake 2) cut off the potential for more of what Quake 1 was and should have continued to be.

The game that i so far adore that raven has made is Singularity intresting setting and theme. I mean its really what modern fps games should try to be today. Another game that i recommend to checkout is Prey 2006 made by former developers of raven still has that raven software feel its also on doom 3 engine too. Really good does some intresting things can be found on myabadonware since it isnt sold anymore works well on modern system without a issue (also wolfenstein 2009 is abadonware like prey 2006 so downloaded if you are intresed)

I pretty much agree with everything in this video. Tho I also have to add that the railgun is not a very good weapon. For a railgun it's very weak. No enemy dies from it from one hit and given it's slow firing speed, It's just not worth using in my opinion.

I absolutely loved the levels where you got to see all the body horror like you could see body parts being repurposed to do other things in these cold metal buildings. As a fan of movies like Event Horizon, I enjoyed the many imaginative ways the Strogg repurposed human bodies and even individual organs. Oh and I got a real kick out of the fact that the Stroyent distribution network was run by a giant heart.

Let us remember that advertising people are the ones who ultimately made Quake to have such an "identity crisis". Quake 2 was supposed to be named Wor (as in, War) but they finally settled on the name we know now because Quake as a brand was so highly recognized as synonymous with the best 3d technology at the time...

I enjoyed playing through Quake 4 when I was somewhere in the 17 to 18 age group. I found it to be rather well made, and it was a fun idea to explore that humanity has regrouped and attacking some kind of war-like race on their own planet, after reversing their technology to get there; even though strogg were more like a made up concept, and it turned out they actually 'were' humans most of the time before they devolved into something else; it explains more why the 'aliens' were not more peaceful or advanced. The gameplay was fun and challenging enough, and I didn't find it cringy at the gore and other parts. It's probably really underrated as just a 1 player game, even though original Quake/QuakeII was similar, but Half-Life using QuakeII's engine really was where the multiplayer went to; 2004 to 2008 was really the peak of amazing games/mods on multiplayer. I don't want to replay it, and possibly be more aware of its flaws or become disappointed. It felt like a solid 9/10 game at the time; Far better than the 'budget' and expensive FPS that come out nowadays. I liked the feeling you are no longer a sole survivor, or just 1 player in some empty level, there were friendly forces that joined along side you, and they would help and die randomly; after all it is a planetary invasion, it isn't just sending 1 person. I'd definitely play a game that expands on the story of this made by similar creators, altho it seems it is 'finished', maybe they can make a different type of game. New games feel a bit easier or dumbed down anyway, it doesn't allow the large amount of things that were possible in mods/games in 2008, even if little info is now available and people won't be able to see what those games were like. The 'top' games tend to be cinematic or slow games (such as the Witcher 3) that while commendable for being well made, can't really be competed at. skill ceilings (even for fps games) are very lowered, or dumber, it has nothing on the multiplayer communities and mods of the past games. However not much remains and many people have never even felt or played the games that required different skill sets, so it sort of seems like 'idiocracy', it reflects people getting dumber, making dumber things, playing dumber things, and making accessibility to them rather than to a real mature audience. RTS and FPS are now flooded with stupider games that little kids can all play and also players who are really dumb, but it allows more profit and less people criticizing.

Good variety of enemies, weapons, and pretty challenging. A worthy addition to the Quake series.

Quake 4 was fun, but it did let me down in very big way. Having seen Doom 3 pick up System Shock 2's concept of collecting personal logs and data files to advance the lore and plot, then hearing about the cybernetic enhancement of the player via "stroggification", I was super excited to think that Id might be delving into character progression for Q4. Imagine being able to customize your Strogg body as you go to be more of a sneaky infiltrator or a heavy tank. The paths available to you could have been based on these choices. Stealth and speed gives you access to crawlspaces and vents and maintenance pathways to circumvent large challenges or allow you to get the drop on foes, as opposed to becoming a mighty walking fortress so you can just smash down the doors and face every challenge head on. Speed, strength, size, weapon choices, health and armor could all have been tied to this system, allowing great replay value and customization. Sadly that wasn't the case. As mentioned in this video, they actually slowed the player down to a mud slog at the beginning of the game, so the only upgrades you ever get are 125 health and armor, and regaining the basic Doom 3 walking speed. I still enjoyed the game, but that was a heck of a departure from my expectations.

the problem at ID Software these days is that they have essentially 3 IPs with very similar themes. There is Doom, with the Hell theme, there is the original Quake with the Lovecraftian theme, and the Quake 2 and 4 with the Strogg. But there aren't nearly enough people to develop the stories and worlds for each of those IPs concurrently. Especially now, that Doom has shown what good gameplay and world-building can be. Video games are becoming more and more complex, in graphics, in gameplay, in world-building. Thus they need more and more people working at them. At one point it will be too much. And thus one franchise will shine and the other 2 will stagnate.

I have great memories from Q4 as a kid - especially the crazy guns and upgrades. Strange you didnt mention the blackhole gun, it had insane dps on bosses. Its also weird that it looks like you have the graphics on low/low in the first sets of gameplay. It looks better later in the video - which confuses me in why that would change. Also the stroggification sequence was one of the bigget twists i had seen in videogames, almost bigger than bioshock. Gud giem, would like a remaster/widescreen update for Q4.
