Quail Farming

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

www.prairiefarmreport.com
Features: Arnie & Shirley Morris and their large Quail egg laying operation near Ardrossan, Alberta. At the time of our visit in 2012 they had nearly 12,000 birds on the farm which allowed them to ship about 250,000 eggs weekly. The egg yoke of a Quail egg is actually bigger than the whites. The shell is harder than a chicken egg shell and you have to use a serrated knife to cut them open. They also operate a hatchery and incubator on the farm.

They might've been rare for his area at the time or he was just ignorant, irregardless, the person that he sourced them from probably upsold him one of those premises. Coturnix quail are by far the most farmed species around the world now.

When I was a just a boy, it was common to run across a large covey of quail here in the south. Usually in a field, they would burst from cover, and your heart would almost leap from your chest. In the spring you could hear them calling all over the place, with the unmistakable bob-white. The last covey I saw here, was more than twenty yrs ago.. and they no longer sing.

Seriously, you can find these guys within 30miles of you on craigslist. They are just very easy to breed, and you really only need a single mating pair to get started and then a new male every year. He likely has a larger number of males to that keep diversity up.

It's like putting a dog in a small kennel as a puppy and leaving it there it's whole life, never letting it out, never interacting with it, never giving it anything to play with. Sure, the dog's been in the cage it's entire life and doesn't know any different, but would you think it's happy living like that?

The quail sit on an angled floor, so the eggs roll forward onto a conveyor belt. I would like to point out that an angled wire floor can cause foot and hip issues for the bird, and living like this is very far from anything natural. Some more space, natural light and a a sand bath would go a long way to improve their life. Unfortunately that is more work thus less profitable.

These are salad bar item in restaurants although you might consume them at the main course. They are to be served boiled and peeled off. There used to be a myth these eggs were afrodisíac, again a myth. They are a great compliment just as mushrooms on one’s salad. The great thing about these eggs is that you do not need to grow them as schlock chicken farms with antibiotics and hormones , so they are supposed to be a healthy snack.

the birds don't necessarily need sunlight if they are raised in buildings, there are many lights that mimic the light waves for daylight that have the correct spectrums etc etc. Think of a grow bulb for plants that don't get enough sun, its the same thing for the birds. To lay eggs the lights must be provided with 14 to 16 hours of daylight otherwise the birds wont lay.
