    im sorry to dare to say but isn't a>0 the graph is compression (shrink) and if a0 isn't that call stretch (wider)? but I also find that this video is helpful too

    in my book, it says that if |a| (absolute value of a) > 1, then it's stretched. if 0>|a| >1, the graph is compressed

    Yeah I think so, it makes more logical sense as well. I haven't really looked at the definitions in my textbook, but I'm pretty sure you're correct.

    The compression/stretch is vertical, not horizontal. The compression squishes the graph down, making it wider. The stretch makes it skinnier.

    Write it in another form and it will all become very easy. (Y + 8) = 3( X + 4)^2 and look the value of X and Y that would make what is in the brackets equal to zero, hence Y=--8 and X= --4 (Y --5) = (1/2)( X --3)^2 and look the value of X and Y that would make what is in the brackets equal to zero, hence Y= +5 and X= +3
