QUAD CORTEX VIDEO 2 - USING IT LIVE - SEAMLESS PATCH SWITCHING

Ойын-сауық

So I've worked more with the Quad Cortex, and in this video I'm showing the incredible CPU possibilities with the unit, like running 2 guitars and an amplifier at once, also showing a way to switch sounds seamless without any hiccups or pauses.
DISCLAIMER : I did get this Quad Cortex for free from Neural as a "demo unit" however it won't affect my opinion about it. They won't see the video before or have a saying on how I make my video. I would have to try it out more to take a decision if it's something I'm gonna continue to use or not or send it back to pick up one of my own units.

I recently acquired a QC for home recording and last week my live amp, a Bogner Ecstacy 101B, blew a tube so I needed a quick replacement to get through the next couple of shows. I decided to try the QC direct to the PA using some of the factory amp captures it came loaded with and it worked out really well. I had a lot of friends at the gig who said they wouldn't have even noticed I was running direct if I hadn't told them. I did however have this glitching issue during patch changes which this video addresses. Thanks for this video as it will save me some time troubleshooting and resolving that problem in the future. Besides the glitchiness between patch changes, there were some challenges with achieving a good tone through both the FOH speakers and my monitor. I'm not terribly worried about that as I'm confident I'll be able to dial in the tones a bit more to my liking over time. At the moment, I can say I definitely prefer my tube head to the QC for my live tone. That being said, the QC sounded pretty damn good especially considering how little time I had to throw the patches together. Going forward I plan to fine tune my QC live performance patches and I'll always keep it with me as a backup rig for live shows.

Imagine putting this in a rack, with a sampler (+ click for the drummer + midi switching the channels/presets) + wireless for the guitars and basses and have your power + XLRs for the FOH in one multicore. Basically like Line 6 Helix Snapshots. We've been able to do this for years. It works the same way. You stick a bunch of amps on the signal paths. They don't even need to be on separate paths. But if you want, you also have four paths on the Helix. Then you just set up snapshots to turn amps, cabs, pedals on and off per prefix. So you can set up stomps to switch amps, cabs, etc just like on the QC. What's cool w/ the Helix is that I can also control the Variax guitars. So I can also control tuning (per-string, not just dropping the entire signal by x intervals, so I can go between a drop tuning and a "standard " tuning, to an open tuning with a stomp of a switch), guitar model, any variax setting, with snapshots. I can say, go from a Les Paul to a Strat, to a Banjo, to a 12-string electric or acoustic with a stomp. They can also send midi commands to other devices when a snap is selected through command-center, change inputs/outputs, etc. So you can also control outside devices. Pretty insane.

I'm impressed with the polyphonic pitch shifting. I'm sure it's been said in the comments, but Kemper Performance Mode can actually give you 5 completely separate rigs with no gap switching in between and morphing (like a single scene or snapshot) in each rig.

  • @JamesBurwellActual

    @JamesBurwellActual

    3 жыл бұрын

Helix just added Polyphonic effects to the latest firmware, although they take a lot of DSP and limit the number of items you can have on your signal path. I only really use the poly wham pedal though, because I typically play with my Variax JTV-89F (Ibanez style w/ floyd), which lets me do all the tuning stuff per string. I even have a patch that turns my guitar into a four, five or six string bass through an emulated SVT. :p

Helix got a seamless switching recently (not for Stomp though), but you have to sacrifice one DSP path. Still, for live use 8 blocks is quite a lot, plus you don't have to tinker with snapshots or anything, just make a bunch of presets. You even can program all the 12 footswitches to switch to a different preset if needed just have everything one switch away.

Marvelous! But the Quad Cortex is not the only one to achieve that. That's just what I've done on my Mod Device pedal. My guitar input goes in a plugin called ToggleSwitch that can go up to 4 different path. So I can have 4 completly different sounds with different preset for each sound with different Amp simulator, cabs, many reverb, delay and looper for each path. Nothing beat Mod Device in term of routing capabilities. Ok Quad cortex has more in and out but Mod Device have 2 in and 2 out so you can use it for 2 guitars. And you can connect as many midi switcher or expression pedal as you want so each guitarist can control his sound! Marvelous! And all that for half the price of a Quad cortex! I hope one day you'll do a review of a Mod Device. Those pedals are really powerfull and sounds great if you take your time to tweak the sound.

Do you know if that is something that has or is going to be changed? Also, do you know if you can have the bottom row of buttons switch scenes and the top row in stomp mode?

Hey Ola, you can have multiple amps in FM3. the FM3 has channels , so yes you can have multiple amps per patch. A B C D. Hope this helps , or I hope I didnt misunderstand.

I’ve never played with a group of guys I trust enough to push my effects pedals at the right time for me. That’s a lot of extra pressure on one guy in the band. Haha. The processing power of the unit is definitely impressive though!

Ola can you get controlled feedback from these types of modelers in a live situation? The good kind of mid-range feedback where a note just blooms when you hold it?

Great video Ola - nice unit no doubt - seems pretty user friendly almost fun huh yes , no ,maybe kinda. Subject change waiting on the solar headless 6 & 7 string guitars with trem systems. It's a market you should jump on (in my opinion) why let Kiesel & Strandberg take it all your guitars would appeal to the metal market I know I would get a Solar. The time is now.

This could be a game changer for us! As a touring band logistics are always a challenge! Does anyone know if you can run MIDI program changes on each track independently? can you also have stereo delays?

I actually use this feature for lessons. I teach bass guitar & music production/recording, this thing is actually VERY convenient for all of that. I can have bass rigs and two different guitar rigs ready at any given time and even plug any students into it at the same time I'm playing if I need to. Oh, and the looper can record for a little less than 5 minutes

makes sense, you're running all 4 paths constantly, never loading anything in or out. imo every modeler should have a way to buffer in several presets for quick switching like this

Great video here! Tons of info I haven't seen in others. I have a question regarding changing presets (like clean, drive, delays and other stuff). From what I understood you can map the buttons so that you could change from a clean tone to a drive tone or enable/bypass FX for any of the chains without affecting the others, right? So that every member of the band can change these parameters depending on what section they are playing independently from the others. I am asking this as I'd love to buy this to run two guitars and a bass through it and each one of us should be able to switch the presets as they need without affecting the other guys. So, for example, each guitar would have a clean tone, a drive tone, some reverb and delay that could be triggered on clean or drive whenever we need, and maybe two tones for the bass, a cleaner one and one that's more aggresive. Basically like each one of us would play through his own pedalboard and amp. This can be achieved, right?

You can set up individual signal paths within a preset and use each for different instruments. Within each path you could switch on and off different effects. It should be possible to have two different amps in one path and switch one off and the other one on. If you would do this for each signal path and start using more complex effects like pitch shifting, harmonizers or complex delays then I guess that's the time when you will have to make sure not to run out of CPU power. If each member of the band wants to control their signal path themselves, each of them would need their own midi controller to remotely control the Quad Cortex. Switching presets will switch them for every one of the band at the same time. So this would usually not be usable within a song.

Yo Ola, i use a Helix and it also has those glitches while switchin presets, but, i can use 2 amps in one preset and control them with snapshots. This means i build my presets like that: (Simple) Ovd amp -> clean amp -> cab ir Then the preset has like 2 snapshots, these snapshots control the bypass of the amp. So if i hit the first, it bypasses the clean amp an i play with overdrive. If if press the second it bypasses the overdrive amp and i play clean. So what i wanted to say is, that the helix is capable of doing those things and its really mighty.

Doing something similar with my band with just one guitar and one bass, what I’m having trouble with is getting levels/mix correct going to FOH/in ears since both the bass and guitar signal is going to the mixer as one output. Hope that makes sense.
