When you realize as an Italian that you don't need to learn Arabic because the hand gestures are exactly the same. ( by the way مرحبا from Italy 😁👋🏻 and happy to learn gulf Arabic language and culture) Ps: I noticed that italian culture has a lot in common whit arabic culture, culturaly Italy is like a bridge between the west and the Arab world, you can live like a German in the north (Aosta Valley or Trentino Suth Thyröl ) or like an Arab in cities like Marsala ( the name has arabic origins : Marsh Allah/ the port of god ) or Mazzara del Vallo where like 30% of women wear Hijab and in the city center there is a 900 years old Mosque. So specially sicily that 900 years ago was under arab domination, you can find a mix of Greek,Arabic and Viking/Normann culture.

Hi, Italian too here. Very interesting. I was aware that Sicily has a deep Arab connection and there are traces of Arabic in the dialects of the region (not to mention the Siculo-Arabic) but I didn't know about the origin of the name of the city of Marsala and did some reading. Apparently, it wouldn't have been possible to assign to a geographical place a name with Allah in the name, as this would not be acceptable in Islam. Most likely it is مَرْسَى عَلِيّ which reads "marsa aliyi" and means "Ali's harbour". There are other places in Italy where women wear head converings that are similar to (but looser than) the hijab. They also feature in several folkloristic costumes.

One hand gesture I've always been curious about because I'm always curious about something I don't know and I love learning about new cultures so I can be respectful of them is something I saw from the very end of the first mummy film with Brendan Fraser where the Magi Breeze's hand from his forehead down to his nose and to his lip to his chin and then below then kisses his hand and put his hand away it seems to me like a farewell greeting like Grace be with you or Allah be with you or safe journey or something like that but I've always been curious what does this mean? Am I close or Way Off the Mark?

Can we have a simple one? How does one properly Salaam, including the hand gestures? (Is is rude for a non-Muslim to greet a Muslim this way? As it translates to wishing Peace upon Our Meeting, I can't see how, but is is rude somehow?) From traveling to other countries in the west, I have found that Hello, Goodbye, Please, Thank You, 1 through 10, Hospital & Airport are nearly essential, and can get a person a long way, without offending anyone. There are some others that in (for example, Germany), one can use without it being rude, that would be totally inappropriate in a predominantly Muslim country (let your imagination run, and it'll get there). Frankly, some of them would be between inappropriate and downright illegal in most parts of the U.S.
