Napoleon's Imperial Guard Grenadiers, the soldiers most usually surrounding him, were a minimum of 5'10" - extremely tall for the time. He wasn't short, he just surrounded himself with the egregiously tall - making himself look small by comparison.

Yeah I’m about 5’5” as well and it’s amazing how people think they can take the piss. It’s one thing friends having a laugh but when it’s from strangers it really makes you wonder how the fuck they think it’s acceptable. To be fair though, although 5’5” is fairly small, it’s not that bad of a height, plenty of women around this height and plenty don’t seem to mind it too, although some definitely do and I’d rather not go out with women a few inches taller myself, so that’s limiting. But I suppose attitude plays a big role in gaining other people’s respect too. In my group of friends I’m known as a pretty talented musician, I can make people laugh and throughout my life women have generally found me attractive. So height is far from the be all and end all. It does define your experience but you shouldn’t let it define you too much. Also, if people are often poking fun, it’s probably best to sharpen your wit and snipe back with something. It’s amazing how soft people can be who dish it out.

@Ben "Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you." -Tyrion Lannister. Make it your armor , make fun of your own height and nobody can use it against you - You are sensitive about it because it still hurts your feelings. I get that. It's true though, and you can't do anything about it except accept it and don't let others use it as a weapon against you. Ignore this, keep being mad about reality, and you'll always hate that part of yourself. Embrace it, mock it, and it will never hurt you again.

Napoleon's height misconception has various possible points of origin, all roughly contemporaneous to one another. The one I've seen the most support for is that it was picked up by a spy or an overheard statement in battle that referred to him as the "little general" as a term of endearment, and the British ran with it and turned it around to belittle him.

  • @DomWeasel

What always fascinated me was how great dictators aren't from the countries they're associated with, so Napoleon is Corsican and had a thick Italian accent, Hitler was Austrian and had a strong Austrian accent and Stalin was from Georgia and once again, strong accent. French generals had trouble understanding Napoleon, Germans were often amused by what they considered Hitler's 'hick' accent and Stalin was famous for his long ponderous speeches that many Russians couldn't understand because of his Georgian accent.

He was half Chinese so at 5'7" not really short, but average. Stallone is an inch shorter at 5'6" and Van Damme is also relatively short. But what you are all missing is that 5'6" is the natural, proportionate height for a human, so it probably just looks better on screen. Big eyes (think Al Pacino) are highly cinematic and attractive. The unusual height of the late twentieth century has caused all kinds of health problems from back problems to extra strain on the heart. As for action stars, a naturally proportioned human tends to move more elegantly than an oversize one.

I get a lot of casual flak for being short. The anger thing, it's much more noticeable and negative for me. Lack of given respect when compared to people of normal or especially tall heights. Being assertive can be tough as you're not taken as seriously at times. Of course, not being the go to for women. Also women seem to assume my penis would also be small, which at least gives them a pleasant surprise since an average one actually seems large with my stature. There's quite a few more other height-related undertones in western society at least. Saying that, due to my bubbly and forward personality it makes me stand out more than someone of average and tall persuasions - since it's simply rare. And although generally respect is down, when people get to know me I find people respect me a lot more than they'd respect someone else, even within a shorter period of time - it seems my height accentuates my personality. Which makes me think, maybe I'm less threatening so people end up trusting me easier? Anyway, we've all got our pros and cons; I'm about 159cm, but it's not half bad. Quite interesting!

They grouped Napoleon in the same category as Franco and Stalin? Napoleon was a war general on the front lines for almost a decade. He fought against the monarchy and revolutionised Europe. Stalin committed democide and forced Russians to work in labour camps. He was a politician, not a man of the people.

Your logic goes above my head. How is it OK to get people killed for some reason (but not the other)? The difference really is only in what tone they are spoken about in your country. Napoleon, you know, set the war to the whole Europe. That kills people. And colonise countries. And in retrospective, those countries were a bit too advanced to get colonised, so, in the end, it was also quite ridiculous and useless mass killing

Meanwhile Russians still revere him as a saint.
