Thanks so much for sharing this option Ian. I will definitely try it out alongside my eTrex32 and let you know how that goes :-) the android option looks very elegant though. This might work very nicely in the field using a small tablet too, I will try that as well. Thanks Colleen

Thank you very much, Ian for the excellent video on how to use QField. I just want to make a note here that at 06:15 when you copy the files to the Documents folder in your phone, I decided to do something different and that's where I ran into some problems. For people like me who try their hardest to avoid conforming with any conventions, standards or normalities, (I guess I was just born to be different), if you have Ubuntu and you haven't bothered to take the time to get it to be able to mount your android phone properly by the USB connection yet, it's easier to just remove the camera card from the phone and mount that in your computer directly instead. If you do like I did and just put the GIS files in the root of the drive, they will be read only to QFeild, and you will not be allowed to save your GPS data later on. But if you put in in your /Android/data/ch.opengis.qfield/files directory it will work, or at least that's what works for me. I'm just posting this in case it might helps somebody else if they fall into the same trap as I did.

Long hold on layer and look at menu that shows. You can zoom to that layer that way.

Hi I can answer your question without getting into QFields, I did an experiment with my phone, Etrex, Montant and Trimble Geo7x to compare results using the gpx plot overlain on a good aerial of image of site. The Etrex will slightly out perform the GPS in my Galaxy Note 8 by 1-2m but of course the Etrex doesn't use android but I think the more expensive Montana models do. Of course the Trimble out performed them all but then so it should its an expensive survey grade GPS. However it runs on a version of Windows not even supported by MS. The phone GPS's are stuck in the accurate to 5m horizontal mode because of the nature of the aerial/chip/software compo which is suitable for general navigation but not precise navigation. However because QFields allows to you import a georeferenced image you can place a point on the image to show where you are and then records attributes and take photos. This may be more accurate. I loved this video as it really shows how simple QFields is and I am going to pas the link onto my colleagues for them to think about. Cheers - Iain Stuart.

Do you happen to know of any cheaper GPS receivers that will get sub decimeter accuracy? And will all receivers need to have the data corrected to get that accurate without having a subscription service like trimbles RTX? I do field data acquisition for telecom companies when they need to submit permits for the DOT right of way and I'm trying to find a solution that is reasonably priced and scalable while also being able to move that data straight into a drafting platform so drafters can finish the permits. I know one way to do it us to use a trimble and import into Autocad civil, but the Geo7x is 8k and the Autocad civil license is pretty expensive as well. This app looks promising if I could pair it with a decent GNSS receiver and figure out the corrections. I would be interested in your opinion on the subject if you have the time. Thanks.

Hi, how did you generate your jpg? I am generating a jpg from a tiff, using the "translate" filter. However this generates a .aux file alongside the jpg file, and it seems qfield isnt using this .aux file properly.

You should be able to synchronize with the parent QGIS project from 2 separate qfield projects. Another option is to upload the files and export to a "new layer". Then export each captured layer to this "new layer", make sure you select the option "Append to layer" when prompted. New records will be inserted.
