Another great video, Paul. Thanks for the upload. It's the closest I get to flying QF these days. You're a brave man flying to Honkers with all the civil unrest going on! It's sad to see streets recently walked on being turned into some sort of battlefield. As you'd be well aware, that central disengaging of the window tinting seems common. Thai, JAL and Etihad do it too making my dawn shots hard to get! Take care out and up there.

I agree with you about sleeping during the day. Whenever I return from Europe to the states, or in general fly west to east, and the flight takes place during the day, I never sleep. It is worse for your jetlag if you sleep during the day and your flight is arriving mid afternoon or evening. I can adjust to my destination timezone very easily by not sleeping on day flights because whenever I get to where I am going, I want to pass out from exhaustion, so I end up sleeping very well that night. Great video!

I do think you are right about the crew closing the window shades to make their life easier, flew QF127 business in a 747 last year and the crew closed them, turned up the heat and hoped everyone went to sleep. I don't want to sleep during the day, and enjoy watching the clouds.

Glad to see you've realised the error of your Fuji ways! The shakes have been driving me mental. I agree about the bathrooms of the QF SYD business lounge - they were looking average when I was last there over a year ago. That said, I never find the rest of the lounge too bad, and grabbing a few coffees and looking out from the high tables at the eastern end is always a nice way to start a trip. I'm a window person too, and hate the move to shutting things down on daytime flights. Still not overly concerned about air vents though. Looking forward to a Cathay report, as may try CX A350 rather than JL 787 to the US soon.

Hi Paul. Great video as always. I don’t recall ever using runway 25 for a takeoff, probably because I usually opt for early morning departures, but I’ve certainly been on flights that have landed on it. The combination of a strong westerly and using 25 certainly makes for a short takeoff roll. I don’t mind the new livery but my favourite has always been the 1971-1984 one with the ochre cheat line and flying kangaroo (giveaway).

Great robust review Paul. Love your honesty. The lack of food is really poor but I am sure is a combination of cost cutting disguised as ‘lighter meal options’ to reduce jet lag. Regarding the sunshades, a lot of US carriers simply leave the sunshades closed all the time especially in the business class cabins and even on takeoff and landing (other airlines around the world make you raise them). I agree with the daytime flight posture but most people in the front want to sleep regardless of time of day (I am not one of them unless I have had too many drinks). Looking forward to your Cathay review.

G'day Paul. Thanks for the review. Interesting that the seating on your flight is similar to that of the A330, between Sydney ( just north of the "Gong"), and Manila (just north of "Stralia"), and a similar flight time of about 8.5 hours. I noticed the same issue with the space in sleeping position, and was unable to get comfortable in the fully flat position, due to the cramped space. The food and the crew however were top class, and will use Qantas again, without hesitation. Thanks again for what you are doing on here.

Yeah, your suspicions are correct, the cabin crew want you sleepy-bye-byes ASAP. They dim the windows during the day and get the initial cabin service done as quickly as possible. The small meal right at the end of the flight also makes for less work during the bulk of the travel time. I go yoiks at the grim prospect of travelling non-stop from Australia to the UK with this kind of amenity.

The flight I was on is overnight and bizarrely we were given a full dinner service ex HKG and minimal breakfast service before arriving in MEL. Hi Paul, looks like the menu is exactly the same as my flight on QF43 to Denpasar a few Fridays ago. It was JUST the right amount given it was an 6 hour afternoon/evening flight and I had a late lunch. I definitely would have come out with the same opinion as you had I received the same catering on a mid-morning to evening flight. I also agree with you regarding the grey they used on the plates, I did a double take the first few times. It probably looked like a subtle design detail in Mr. Caon's office, but in a dimmed cabin or under variable lounge lighting it gives a very different impression. My 2-cents is that a darker grey would have been a bit better. As an aside I do fear that Qantas is taking a similar approach as BA was a few years ago in terms of onboard soft product on medium and long haul flights. However given the general improvement and direction BA is going with its medium and long-haul catering and overall product, maybe this is cyclical and I hope we'll see a change from Qantas at some point in the future. Ps slightly off topic but I'm looking forward to an eventual review from you of the newer BA products (which I am guessing will be forthcoming at some point) to see your opinion on how that part of their operation stack up (we won't mention their intra-europe short haul product though)
