Great review Thomas . You are truly one of the best at what you do. I've had these 3050i speakers for almost a year and i really didn't have any plans on keeping them long term. I realized every time i would listen to them , i'd end up listening for longer periods than expected.I've paired them with NAD, Parasound,Crown XLS, Crown CLASS A-B XLI SERIES(my favorite choice), Antelope Audio DAC, vintage Onkyo Preamp and the speakers just sound great to me and not just for the money. One of my audiophile mentors borrowed these speakers for a week and hooked them up to his $20,000 front-end system. He ended up ordering a pair and switches between these and his Vandersteens that cost him 10 grand. Again great job reviewing these speakers that really surprised me.

Thanks for your review Thomas. You're definitely one of the most trusted and honest reviewers out there. The only issue I find with q acoustics is that they don't sound great a low volume. As you discovered, they come alive with more power and volume.

I just bought these truly amazing speakers for £350 plus delivery due to a mark on the bottom of one speaker . The speakers filled my room, which is about 30ft x 16ft, I set the room up at 20ft x 16ft, and that's the sweet spot for me. The bass was full, the mids lovely, and the highs very, very nice. I played Zero 7 ablum and Primo scream screamadelica , and, for the first time in a while, I stopped playing with my phone and looked up, saying out loud, "Wow, these are special." I have paired the speakers with a Cyrus 8 and PSXR power supply. My CD player is an older Philips, and I used QED cables and silver surround QED Anniversary cabling. I tried normal copper cables, but the top end wasn't as sharp and detailed. I also tried an older Myryad T-40 pre - and T-60 power before changing to the M120 power. The Myrad sounds more relaxed, smooth, and easy to listen to, and has very detailed bass. It's more subdued but suits the mids and highs. Great amps and are well-deserving of their praise. The Cyrus match is just perfect. I'm going to try class A as per your advice, Side note your advice made me purchase the Q Acoustics with 2 other reviewers . I'm very grateful. Very well-rounded channel and honest; it tells the details that matter. Still grateful, Martin P.S. What's a good second-hand class A amplifier to get, which is also affordable?

Good bit onnthe QED cables. You should definitely do more reviews on cables (especially this price range) I'm sure you would have enough viewers who would listen with keen interest. 🍻

Thanks for a great Chanel. Just got hold of a used pair recently. Wanted more house filling sound then my stand mounted could deliver. 3050i didn't dissapoint in that respect. They är bass happy and dips down below 4 ohm in impedance so if you want to get that loud Turbo kick you better have a amp with good dampening factor. I pair it with a Arcam fmj a38 + a old Beogram 7000 CD player (tda 1541a chip!) and that combo works really well. Others have recomended Arcam or Hegel. When you crank them up they really load the space with bass and smaller, cloesed rooms might run into problems here. Big plus for me: they play bad recordings without killing my ears! They work well with all sorts of music, rock, pop, aucustic, full scale symfhonic ocestra etc. The only negative thing I have with the 3050i is the (upper) midrange. I find it a bit recessed. Some electic guitarrs get in the background as well as some vocals. I have not seen any measurments on them but I suspect there is a dip in the upper mids and or lower uppers. All in all a great value for the money. Brings a lot of joy and music focusing. A bit hard to listen to them analyticaly when the music and your emotions takes you away.

One thing I find a bit lacking is the tonality. I lived with live music (acoustic and electric) my entire life. I really know what instruments sound like. I also have near perfect hearing in tone and notice when something is out of key. 3050i is a tiny bit off in both departments. I tested against Borea BR03 and Wharfdale Dimond 225 and realized how good they both are when in comes to tonality.

When you switched out to the high end gear you could REALLY hear the difference. You've got some good stuff there Thomas!

Thanks! The Schiit Freya + Moon w5.3 will sound pretty good too. Keep in mind the Moon is like 6+ time the price of the Crown. I would still say it sounds ok the Freya + Crown.

I bought the Q3050 (discontinued version) of this speaker for $400 pair off Amazon and my experience matches Thomas' perfectly. They scale up big time and have proven this through many upgrades of other components.

This Speakers have crazy potential. In my set up the speakers are the "cheapest" compoment and im so happy it is!

Thank you for clarifying a lot of the questions that I had about the 3050. I think it would be helpful to try speakers with $400 and $800 speakers to get a sense of their performance within lower budgets.

The late Ken Ishiwata was using Q acoustics speakers for his Marantz presentations at high-end shows. You can find his videos here on KZread, the sound is sublime.

Well the Q Acoustics Concept 500 had a lot of glowing reviews from different magazines and websites like What hifi, AV Forums, etc. But I guess the factory should consider get some reviews from serious reviewers like you on KZread. Their sales of that model could rise for sure.

@@maximea4135 The difference between the 3050 to the 3050i, is that the 3050i uses unicorn hair, Hemholtz Baffle, 2mm of extra mdf in the cabinet thickness and extra bracing. The 3050i's have tighter more defined bass response and mid range due to all of the above.

This is a great review! I’ve been considering the 3030i to run my Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo & my ifi Zen preamp. However, the 3050i’s are in my budget. I’m curious… In your opinion do you think that little preamp will be enough to run my record player and the 3050is? Eventually, I would possibly incorporate a CD player of some sort but probably not try running my whole entertainment system. Penny for your thoughts.

Thanks I've just received mine, paid 399 for the English walnut pair, I'm running them via a pioneer a400 and Marantz cd player with a system deck 900, the a400 gives them a nice deep kick compared to the more expensive modern amps (one of which I have) I've tried them with a Yamaha amp and the character changes, it depends on the amp as to how they react, I've stayed with an a 400 for years, can't beat it for speakers in this bracket, as for cables lol been through all that lamp wire is as good, being in the know the values are the same when metered, a decent roll of average bear cable suffices, the cable war was dealt with by schematic graphs, only the guage has any relevance, double blind tests also backed this up, I remember buying silver plated etc only to be sat convincing myself it was better to not feel ripped off

At 4:25 you show some side-wall mounted speakers in the front soundstage... I'm wondering what those are and if you have a video about them and that unique setup.

Hey Thomas, thanks for yr down to earth assessment of the 3050i. I just got myself a pair a few weeks back. Out of the box, vocals sounded edgy, tizzy and small - as if the singers are miniaturized. Wondering whether in yr experience with them a certain time for burn-in was required, and whether it changed anything in that regard. [Am comparing them to an old pair of Boston Acoustics A360 which had breathy, airy n texturized vocals.]

Thanks. I remember with the wrong amplification, it can sound shouty and you need to hit a certain volume for it to come alive. I took a look at the A360 and if I were to guess, it would be a lateral move instead a move up. My suggestion when it comes to upgrade is always to jump 2 levels. In your case, it is possible either it is not your taste or your amp is not a good match with it. A few weeks of playing is more than enough to break it in. After 30 or was it 50 hours, you are pretty much done breaking it in. Ideally you will play bass heavy music with slightly high volume to really break it in. I just did it with the Acoustic Energy and it did tame the highs down after break in.

For me, the 301 work best with 94db+ speakers.

Thomas I listened to Q Acoustics 3050i with a Rega IO amp and it sounded pretty good but the bass was a bit uncontrolled. What would say if you compared them to Triangle Borea BR03s. I know BR03s are stand mounts and 3050is will fill larger rooms better but still I want to hear your opinion on the sound differences of each speaker.

I listened year ago ABC testing 3020i, 3050i and 500 in small hifi store. They all was paired Denon pma 1600ne amp. 320i and 350i sounded very nice. Sometimes I tought that 320i sounded better. 500 had that room too much bass and it was so boomy. There I heard how important is select right kind speakers listening room they will be used.

Great review... I have a bluesound node 2i running into a crown xls (and also sometime my old peachtree Nova as a pre) and 3050's. But I want to upgrade to a better more analogue sounding dac so wondered if the musical paradise dac could run directly to the crown amp or does it need to go through a pre-amp first? Secondly I would also be really interested to get your opinion on the musical paradise's bigger brother the mp2 dac as it also seems interesting and affordable but there are not a lot of reviews out there to see if worth investing in.

Yeah, perhaps one day I will look into the Mp2. I did run the MP dac directly to the crown and yeah it was ok. You do need to upgrade the tubes and you will get a rounder top end but I am not sure it is the best place to invest your money. I wonder if you find it not analog sounding enough due to the XLS cause that thing is pretty sharp.

Hi Thomas this is a brilliant review. However it has left me quite confused… do I buy 3050i’s and a 3090Ci or monitor audio bronze 200s with a c150? Please could you provide some insight? I watch movies, listen to music and play games. I have an svs sb1000 sub if that helps.

Thanks for the details. Would you advise the bookshelf version if listening at loud volume wasn't an option? Also what room size would be too small for this floor standing version?

I never heard the bookshelf but someone did mention if I used tone control, it might solve the problem. These speakers are really small so it would fit in most rooms. You can use the foam plug if there is too much bass. Also, they have a trial period.

I agree with Thomas. Don't let a small room put you off buying floor standing speakers. Just make sure that you have enough room to pull them 4 feet from the wall and that your room is 'acoustically treated' with some nice soft materials.

I think some people may buy this speaker and because its not to their taste they may speak negative things about it, thanks for putting things in perspective, Thomas, i bought this speaker recently and am loving it,thanks for your imput.

a great affordable floorstands would be the tannoy eclipse 3,please review them if you could

Had the same experience with the older 3050's, which I got at a bargain as old stock. I demo'd and compared to the new i model which was slightly improved in some areas but not in all so I chose the 3050's and will happily stay with them until they die, because they suit my broad music tastes, modest room and of course limited funds 😄 but I must say Qacoustics do make great speakers that go beyond their entry level price points. Also they take a bit of time to fully break in...to my ears

As a side note they are a little laid back ...so work pretty well with bright or warm amps and sources etc ...but sound especially sweet with some tubes in the mix. All the best 👍

For people on a budget hear this. I picked up a used pair of 3050i about 3 year old for 275 euro. And paired it with again a used amplifier the cambridge audio axa35 for 170 euro. And as pre out i used my denon receiver. It sounds wonderfull, good deep and detailled bass. Midrange is dynamic and clear. Highs are detailed but not harsh.

wonder how it would sound with BC Acoustics XE-214 ? :)

Should i buy the Q Acoustics 3050i's or the Klipsch R-820f's ?

These are incredible loudspeakers for the money, friend of mine in the UK who runs an independent high end audio store carries Q Acoustics as they really get people into a high quality sound without breaking the bank

In a 13x15 space with $3k front end electronics, 3050i or KEF R3? I realize double the price for the KEF and different type of sound - musical vs analytical. Image and soundstage are very important. From your many great reviews I believe I have similar listening likeness’s as you.

I have an Onkyo TX-NR 6100 and I'm planning on getting the "3050i 5.1 plus "pack which includes these 3050i (x2) + 3010i (x2 surround) + 3090i (center) and their Q B12 subwoofer. Do you think the Onkyo will be able to get the best out of these speakers?

Hi Thomas, Last Nov 21 brought bic pl980 package and its getting head ache, so exchanged and got New 3050i, 20i,90 but overall movie experience good, listening to music is very bad experience with sr5014. In direct mode the song was boomy and the high also very high. Really got big disappointment of those 2 packages, give me a good solution.

make sure you don't use a two smaller screwdriver with you lol what about the 5000 series any chance of getting them in and there's a big price difference! should work well with the iotavx combo, have you tried?

Did you run these speakers in before the test? If so, for how long and did you notice a marked difference from the out of the box sound?

I think about 30 hours, I don't remember it changing a lot in the sense that it sounded ok when I first got it out. Only when something sound bad at the beginning that I start doing 100+ hours break in.

hey man! I love your reviews, they seem very clear and sincere. I loved these 3050i and have bought them. I have them hooked up to an NAD C352, and it sounds good, but it doesn't sound great. Before, I had a much simpler system, some Magnat 802s connected to a Cambridge Audio Am5 and it sounded fantastic even though it was only 20W per channel. Do you think these 3050i would sound good with a CA AXA35? I had also thought of a yamaha s-700. Thank you very much and greetings

The problem might simply the sound is not to your taste, perhaps you prefer something with more sparkle on top like focal speakers, I can't say would it sound good with a AXA35 cause I have never tried it. The question you should ask yourself is what is missing so that it does not impress you? Detail? bass? speed? Soundstage?

I have tried the 3050i with my old 20W Cambridge AM5 and it has more sharpness and brightness but it lacks body and punch. Do you think that with a yamaha s-700 it would be solved? or maybe with a Cambridge Audio CXA81 I like it better, already knowing how one of its little brothers sounds. Still, I'm very happy with the sound. To watch movies in my home cinema I connect them to an Onkyo tx-nr696 with a Vieta l'Orfeo center speaker and it sounds glorious! Thanks for your time

Hello Thomas, thanks for the review. If I have to spend money on a tower speaker, let's say 1000 usd, how much more money do I have to spend on a bookshelf speaker in order to get/feel a "not sound like a toy sound" compared to the towers? You always say that you don't like the bookshelf speakers as much as the tower,so I want to know if there is a "rule of thumb" or guidance. Just curious. Thanks.

There is no rule of thumb because each brand has its strength. For example, the S400 buchardt has no problem when it comes to bass and can rival a tower. It really comes down to what works for you in your room. Mostly the difference is in the scale of presentation and bass extension.

Hi Thomas. Thanks for the interview. I have narrowed my first floor speaker system down to three or four brands: Fyne F502 or 502SP, Klipsch Forte III, or the Q Acoustic Concept 40 or 3050i. Of course I never heard the Q's because they are online only, but the Fyne's are pretty nice. But I do like the Q's price range and curious if they will be nice at low volumes to moderate. Low volume as in your whisper late at night when everyone is asleep. That kind of low...maybe a bit louder, but still low. I think the Forte III probably wins in this case, but weird to get such a huge speaker if I will listen to low to high low volumes, seems like a huge speaker for low playing sessions. The Q's seem to be half decent. What say you? Price range: 1000 to 3000, prefer 1k to 1.5k

The 3050i shines once you hit a certain volume, so low listening volume is not ideal. If you are going for low level listening, you might prefer something a bit sharper.

@@ThomasAndStereo Thanks Thomas. Yeah I am so surprised how long it takes to shop for stuff. I am about to demo Triangle speakers and pair them against the Fyne Audio F502 and the F502SP. Then I am done. Next steps is try to figure out Ethernet access. I don't want to use Wifi cause it stinks in the house and I just rather hard wire my source into the Modem. But that is upstairs about 100 ft away, so I am figuring the best thing to do is to have a Network Switcher near my gear in the basement, and connect the switcher to the modem and my BlueSound or whichever streamer I get to the switcher. All this work just to listen to music? Any other simpler way? What am I missing? Sure, I can get a Mesh and improve my Wifi signal, but I heard there is some bands lost during that approach vs. hard wiring?

I've had the Q Acoustic Q7000 (originals) for quite a few years now. Do you think the 3050i would be a worthy upgrade?

Hmm I've had these on my short list of potential speakers to upgrade to (sub-$1000 floorstanders), but I find myself doing more and more listening at low volumes lately. So their weakness at low volumes is disappointing but important to know about. However, I was discussing another pair of speakers' (Tekton Lore Reference) low-volume performance recently and the first guy I talked to who owns them said they weren't great at low volumes. I asked some others who own or have owned the same speakers what they thought about them at low volumes and they think they're great at low volumes! Turns out the first guy uses no tone controls, while the others use tone controls or a loudness switch at low volumes. Tone controls are key IMO, especially for low volume listening. Thomas, do you use Loudness or tone controls, particularly when listening at low volumes? If not, I'd highly suggest trying it with the 3050i.

I don't use tone control so perhaps that is why. The loudness button is good for helping with low volume listening. They have a free trial I think. Check with them and if they do, maybe try it at your home?

When are you going to focus on the Crown XLS 2502 ?

Brio sounds lovely but will strugle with bass control due to a rather low dampening factor. Look for speakers that don't dip low in impedance. Both Q and Triangel dips below 4 ohm.

I bought the 3050i's after watching this video. I like them, but now realize I need an amp to push them. My AV sony STRD1080 isn't strong enough to push them. I have watched all you videos, and not sure if tube amp or Cambridge CXA60 would be best choice, or tube amp like your videos on Reisong A10, and A50? Its a large room. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

The extreme opposite. Focal is all about detail and clarity with its metal tweeter. If you like that kind of sound, this is not for you.

I'm not into forward/bright (in your face)sounding speakers. So i bought last october Q 3030i with Yamaha a-s 501.I was very worry maybe the sound turn out to be too bright for me.Ηappily the sound is laid back.The highs are crystal but not offencive,the mids are warm and revealingly and the bass deep and strong (in my room).In some movies bass gets very low frequencies like a subwoofer!The whole room is shaking!!So i don't have to spend more money for a subwoofer. Like i said i was worry about the synergy between them but Yamaha A-S 501 proved to be a true gem.Far better speakers than wrfs 12.2.

Speaker cables might make a big difference if you run the wire in all of your equipment too. But just from the amp to the speaker, I think people expect you need to spend way more than is necessary.

In my opinion these speakers are selling to cheap. Thats why people are buying them for the "price corresponding" amplifiers. Like me...Got those with a new Marantz PM6006...Everything was "ok." Enough good to get me interested for more..After 6 months fatiquing listening i pulled the trigger on a new Primaluna Prologue Classic (bought GL KT77s PWT and Psvane Mark II PreT also). Let me tell you..Those speakers grew like crazy. (also using Marantz HD-DAC1 with PC or Rega planar 3). Fyi.. Not far behind from my friends Ayon setup. BTW. Thomas, Love your work and the personality you bring over. And yes your video on PL vs Yaqin, was very helpful when i was deciding on my PL. Warm Regards from Slovenia and stay safe!

Well, the top end extension will be so different that you will feel the difference. The speed of the 948 should catch your attention but it still depends if it is to your taste.

What ? Compare a £350 speaker with a £1250 speaker ? I think if that ever happens the fact that they are comparing one speaker that is three times the price of another tells a very simple story. Either the £1250 speaker is rubbish, or the £350 is a remarkable achievement.

I just love both, Q Acoustics speaker and QED cables a match made in heaven. I would seriously argue paying more buys you a better pair of speakers? No matter what your taste in music expectation of how they sound or your budget, its job done now move on and upgrade the rest of your music system to match. If you have bought anything else then you only have yourself to blame.
