Excellent advice Gene, and thank you for answering my question on this video. As you advised, why fix what isn't broke! Love it! I feel better about keeping my current set up for now. By the time I get new products it'll be just my luck that they'll change it all again just as they did when I finally got my current system to 11.2. I think I'll wait a while and see what other products come to the market. Thank you again Gene! Kevin

Hi Gene thanks for the great advice on multiple home theater set up questions. One question I have pertains to the sound modes you mentioned. More than likely it’s in my head, but when I use the “regular” decoded audio ie DTS-X, Dolby True HD, I feel that there is a tiny audio lag where audio comes first then people’s lips move. However, when I use the associated sound mode, Dolby surround for Dolby and DTS Neural X for DTS, there doesn’t seem to be a lag. Is this in my head? Currently run a 3.1 system with Sony towers, Yamaha center, and Onkyo for receiver. Also this occurs across all media ie cable, blu rays, 4K blu rays, streaming content.

Hi Gene. Love the Q&A's. I recently bought a Denon x2300w and have the .2 set up for front highs, above the L&R, close to the ceiling, tilted towards the listening position. Would in ceiling speakers be of noticeable improvement for Atmos, DTSx, DTS Neutral and DD Surround v much work to install them and wife approval? Greetings from the UK. PS..Won't even consider bouncy house speakers!!

I was wondering if you knew which small speakers produce the best sound. I was considering Bowers & Wilkins Mt 50 satellite speakers , I already have a velodyne impact 10 subwoofer....Thank you! I don't have the room for larger speakers or I would get them, so, small is best for me at this time.....p.s. my current speakers are Definitive Technology ProCinema 600 5-Pack Home Theater Speaker System

Hi Gene,After further researching these new codecs (Dolby Atmos & DTS:X), and also being extremely lucky in that we just had our local AMC theater add a Dolby Atmos (and IMAX) theater to where I could experience a true Dolby Atmos industrial theater, I decided to sell my Denon AVR-4520ci and bought a new Denon AVR X-7200WA and also had two in ceiling speakers installed. In doing so, one thing I discovered as my local home theater installer was trying to configure my new AVR, is there are SO many different speaker configurations these new receivers offer! The guy that installed my two new in ceiling speakers was having one heck of a time trying to figure out how to go into the Denon X-7200WA's settings and pick the correct configuration to where I have all 11 speakers playing. I kept my Emotiva XPA-3 to power my front left, center & right channels (same as before). But even I (after owning 6 previous Denon AVR's) had a difficult time trying to figure this out, and I'm pretty familiar with the Denon OSD, and navigating around the menu settings. Have you had a chance to check out all these different speaker configs with these new Denon Atmos receivers? I would love for you (and Hugo) to do a video on all these new speaker configurations! This is one topic I just can't seem to find a video about anywhere on youtube! Plus, your approach in explaining settings is always very straight forward and understanding to even the novice viewers out there. We ( I ) finally figured it out, but even still, I'm not sure I'm being able to take advantage of the "best" setting for my theater speaker locations with these new codecs? And also, Auro3D is another option I can download via my AVR, but at a cost of $200. What are your thoughts on Auro3D and is it worth the $$? As always, thank you for your time Gene!Kevin

  • @Audioholics

    @Audioholics

    7 жыл бұрын

Yes I know the speaker layout in the OSD can be daunting with all of the different options. Auro-3D is a niche with limited software. What is available sounds great but the format isn't really compatible with just 2 ceiling speakers. They really want front/back height channels. Thank you for the reply Gene! At some point, I still hope you decide to do a video on all the different speaker configurations within the Denon option menu like you've done with previous Denon models. This really is daunting as you said! Again, as always thank you for your quick response! Love all your videos!

The loudness is there but not the mid response and fullness. I have def tech for the rest of my speakers which sounds good. Im wondering what a good next step would be. Probably a dedicated amp, but 2 channel or 5 channel. Whats good without going overboard?

Hey Gene I was wondering if you can do some kind of tutorial using the mini dsp and REW. I am planning on getting the recommended equipment to achieve my bass Nirvana. There is not much info out there for beginners who would like to take proper measurements and apply equalization to correct any peeks or dips. I also notice in trying to get a good average of the bass using a spl meter is difficult since the meter fluctuates so much and most of the time the bass seems so low according to the meter that when I raise it a little the meter practically peeks. Any help or advice would be great! Thanks in advance.

Just got a 2016 Sony Bravia 55" TV, my old 5.1 Yamaha RX-V995 is from 1998. I connected from TV to Yamaha by Toslink. It is working fine, sometimes I cannot hear the voices enough without turning up the volume but then later on in a movie everything else becomes just too loud(this was watch a movie on PLEX on the TV). I tried raising the centre channel level but I couldn't get it right. So next is if I get a new 5.1 receiver what would you recommend? Layout of room only allows for conventional L C R RL RR speakers I already have. Next is on a new 5.1 receiver connecting between TV and receiver. ARC? Why do the receivers have 4k upscaling and processing when the TV already has all that. I would assume the 5.1 Rx to be set to HDMI pasthrough?

I have ceiling speakers. Does that effect the recommendations for crossovers. I have Polk 8” round ceiling and Polk center and Polk psw10. Denon AVR-3300. Some movies have muffling etc. I’ve done the Audyssey and adjusted front to 90 and center to 100 and now at 150. That seems to help muffled speech. Sub is at 120. At 80 all around the sound is really muffled. The speaker set up isn’t great since I used hikes from ceiling lights already available and no room for wall or stand speakers. Any suggestions for decreasing muffle or is that cost of using ceiling and not exact positioning. I’ve learned a lot from these sessions and apply things as I learn more. A lot of the information is way over my head when technical information discussed.

Hey Gene, I have a Pioneer VSX-821-K reciever that I bought in 2012. I use the HDMI ports and there seems to be a major problem. Occasionally the sound won't kick in or will start to distort and scramble, and then sometimes it will blast a high-pitch, ear-exploding noise out of the speakers. I already bought a new Denon X-1300-W to replace this demon summoner, so before I toss it in the bin I was wondering if you know what may be causing this? Love the videos, -Jeff

How much power amplification do you need for a given room? Yes, I know we can make ears bleed, but it's an honest question with reasonable audio professional guidelines. After watching a bunch of your videos and reading on speaker design and building, I'm going to overhaul the system in my living room. I am planning on doing separates with a miniDSP and a 7.2. It looks like the way to go for future upgrades. I'd like to start my research on amps and speakers, but I can't do it until I know how much power I need. My room is 22x24 with a hallway and vaulted ceilings that start at 8 feet and go to 12 feet. Thanks for all the help!

Great info. I have a question on a very different subject. I inherited an old school Laserdisc system and a large quantity of discs from an uncle that I used to visit frequently. He was a big time audio / video guy. My setup is a 7 year old HT receiver and a recently upgraded Epson 5020UB projector with a Elite Screens Cinegrey 110" wall mounted screen. I love the movies I inherited and the Laserdisc player but, the picture quality in comparison to my DVD movies and Blu-Ray movies leaves something to be desired. So, my question to you is, are there newer HT receivers that have video circuitry that can improve the displayed picture quality of Laserdisc movies via the Pioneer player I inherited? If yes, which HT receivers have the best video circuitry for my needs? Your response to my question would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Outside of a decent 2 ch external amp or a decent Crown Xti or decent QSC pro amp an older Sony ES or phat Denon AVR isn't bad they are full stated RMS wattage all channels driven often well below 1% thd with good overhead for transient peaks at full 20-20K Hz bandith not like the cheaper maybe ~ sub $1 K AVR's today that are wheezers by comparison and only funky rated at a useless maximum power at 1 KHz at 1 ch driven @10 % thd . A $199.00 Behringer A500 Reference power Amplifier will put most AVR's to bed clean power wise on 2 channels at 8 ohms and 125 RMS watts per channel and 350 Watt peaks and not break a sweat most of them benched clean at 200 WPC RMS @ 4 ohms you can still buy them new and they destroy most AVRs on 2 ch. I had one of those on my 350 wpc rms avg power rated THX PM3 certified large studio monitors before I got the much more expensive and more powerful Crown XTI and none of the much more expensive AVR's rated at a real 100- 110 wpc RMS here could come close to it on those 6 ohm large mid field monitors . The older Sony and phat Dennon AVR'S are mostly fully discrete amps often well below 1% THD at full power all channels driven outside of a couple of digital drive models Sony made . OTOH they weighed 30 -40 LBS with plausible transformers for that real clean power not like the 17lb lightweights today that can only pretend to be powerful and clean . I'm sure the better Yammies were like that also and the Sony (real ES ) 7.1 AVR in here weighs 31 LBS . A decent 30-35 lb AVR will probably run $799.00 -$899.00 plus today just like the real Sony ES models back in the mid 2000's ☺ IMO ( old school going back over 40 yrs ) with most speakers outside of something like Klipsch Lascala or Corner Horns or some vintage JBL butt cheeks and like that there arent any free rides with a class AB amp and 17-20 Lbs ain't going to be much for 2.1/ 5.1/7.1 or (2, 5 or 7 ch ) channels (clean ) at elevated levels . I always look for ~ 30 LBS plus in a class AB amplification AVR or amps unless it's a Crown XTi 2002 like I use for L/R on my 2.1- 2 powered sub reference THX PM 3 certified music rig ☺

"In wall speakers properly installed" I tell you that is some difficult information to ascertain. Every video online show installers just throwing the speakers in the wall with either nothing behind the speaker or pushed in compacted fiberglass insulation that was already in the wall. Whats the proper method? Are there other treatments needed like MLV or foam "boxes" installed in the soffit? PLEASE any info would be great! I just had to down size from RF7 and RC64 speakers to in wall for space purposes and I need guidance.

for Yamaha DSP? If you turn down the parameters and use presence speakers, they can be good. It really depends on source material and your room acoustics. Give it a try, but regular surround usually wins in terms of clarity.

Atmos not supporting 9.1 is an inaccuracy. Amos can be set up as 9.1.4! The problem is there is no manufacture at the moment, that i know of, to support that set up... I would recommend waiting for the 9.1.4 option.

LokiTH102 Atmos supports up to 32 channels in the home but does not support width channels according to Dolby.

Look at page 32 of the following documentation... Dolby clearly supports the "traditional" 9.1 layout + the 4 height speakers! www.dolby.com/us/en/technologies/dolby-atmos/dolby-atmos-home-theater-installation-guidelines.pdf To me the problem is not if someone is right or wrong. The problem is that dolby clearly supports this kind of installation at home and yet no manufacturer give us this option! I don't have a gazillion amount of money to spend on this expensive hobby, yet I am extremely passionate about it... It makes me mad when companies play us for fools! Sure, not many people will buy something like that but shouldn't a pre-pro with descent quality, 9.1.4 capability, audyssey or dirac + 24bit / 96khz processing when implementing ALL of the above exist? (I know movies will use at most 24bit/48khz. There is also multi-channel "high-res" audio - let's not get into that right now!) I am sorry for my rant but I feel that If we as a community don't demand more at a "reasonable" price we will never get any!!!

Are Pro-Amps O.K to use in home audio? I am referring to the better quality ones. Never heard you discuss this topic.

Depends. Some proamps can be very noisy, especially if they have a constantly running cooling fan. If the Pro Amp is rated 1000 watts, weighs only 8lbs and costs only $400, be leery on the quality and the power claim.
