Q&A Part 4 of 4: Pain Management, Mobility, Assistance & Pressure Sore

Thank you for watching my video!
61. Did you receive additional surgery to move your arm, or were you able to to always move it after your accident?
62. Can you explain what the doctor said about your hand? And how the accident contributed to it?
63. Do you have someone that moves/massages your legs etc so they don’t go stiff and maybe help with pain? Do you receive daily, full body exercise or at least a considerable amount of movement?
64. How long did it take for you to accept that you were paralyzed?
65. How much mobility(on your own) do you have? Has that been the same since your accident or changed over time?
66. Is it the local city government that’s making changes to your health care that is making it difficult to get what you need?
67. How much can your daily pain be controlled?
68. Do you mind sharing what your particular needs are at this time? Are you with family?
69. Project Walk: Do you think it was sweat or AD issues?
70. Have you had the opportunity to use an FES cycle ergometer? (Functional electric stimulation)
71. Do you have uncontrollable spasms in your legs?
72. Do your assistants have a log and write daily notes on your ADLS(activities of daily living) to keep track?
73. Why have you had to be in bed the last few months?
74. What degree of pressure sore do you have?
75. Why did they not pick up on pressure sore earlier?
76. How do you eat laying down?
77. Are you on blood thinners if bed bound at the moment?
78. Why have you not been in hospital to help heal pressure sore?
79. Have you heard of, or tried using honey for any pressure ulcers?
80. You know of corn cushions for the foot? Do they have those for pressure sores?

Hey Erin ❤ - I’ve only just found your channel & I think it’s great even though I’m only a few streams in. The story of your accident💔 was the first vid I watched and I truly appreciated everything you shared. Sorry if you’ve already spoken to this - but I was wondering about your mum & how she went processing & adjusting to your trauma? I guess your grandparents too given that they were such a big part of your life. Your resilience & determination is incredible tbh & I’m thinking that perhaps your family has something to do with that? Or maybe not!!😬

@@eirinceciliegjedrem Something cool about you that I can’t do: You can eat and drink while laying down flat! I wish I could! 😁 I was born with a life-threatening birth defect that required tons of surgery - my plumbing was off. My esophagus ended in a little pit instead of hooking up to my stomach. So in the surgeries they had to stretch my tiny half of an esophagus out to hook it up to my stomach and create a sphincter there, and then I had to get my esophagus dilated all the time because it naturally wanted to close up. There’s no peristalsis muscles in my esophagus to push food or liquid down into my stomach, and I’m also unable to throw up. I have to sit upright and drink a ton of liquid with each bite of food in order to push my food down, with the help of gravity. I have to chew things up extra well. If I don’t do all that, the bite of food will just sit at the top of my throat, going nowhere, and that’s super uncomfortable. As you can imagine, it’s a very slow process for me to eat lol. I have always been the very last one still eating when eating with others throughout my life - the school bell would ring for lunch to be over and I was _STILL_ eating (luckily I had a dear best friend who always stayed with me 😊). One would think I’d be overweight seeing me eat so long, but it’s quite the opposite; I’ve always been underweight. Drinking so much of anything will make feel full faster, so I constantly have to give it some time for the liquid to digest a bit before I feel like I have more stomach room to pick up eating again. It was nothing more than an annoyance/inconvenience all my life (mostly because I could never eat while out and about unless I had access to a ton of water or other drink). But it’s a lot more than an annoyance now since my spine surgery that disabled me and made me mostly bedridden. I spend most of my time lying flat too, but eating forces me to have to constantly push my upper body up just to take every bite, chew, and swallow it. Well I often don’t feel good enough with my pain levels to do it, so either I just don’t eat and deal with a pissed off grumbling hungry stomach, or I’ll end up not finishing the food because I’m just not up to pushing myself up repetitively for so long. Anyways, I’m jealous/envious of that neato ability of yours. :) Peristalsis is so freaking cool and I wish I had it! How beyond geeky does that sound?? 😂

Hi Eirin! I’m happy to have found your lovely channel! I’ve been completely bedbound for the past 5 years due to a progressive neurological condition, so I relate to a lot of what you’re going through. From a young age I’ve gradually lost the ability to walk, stand, sit up, eat solid food and so on. I think instead of accepting, I try to make the best of the life I’ve been given and the circumstances I’m in, even though I don’t always succeed. I still wish things would be different and I still grieve for the life I’ve lost. I think that’s human and natural. It’s a difficult balance sometimes. Hugs from Finland! ❤️

This is a feeling of power, of a new thought " do what you still CAN do and do not struggle all the time regreting things which are no more possible". And the thought that I do not have to accept it, let me make a snall place in my mind where this unfullfield field may rest". Your presence, Eirin, is a gift for people. Thank you for being!❤🌹

Eirin, #64 is a very profound question but I do understand it, and your therapist answer about Excepting your citation, I gave birth to a very sick baby, everyone( family )said you HAVE to except this she will not live a year she will be a vegetable, she will never sit up, if she does don’t expect her to walk, etc etc. we did not except that and thank Jehovah God we did not. She is 39 years old, lives in a group home for handicapped adults and walks, talks, reads books, and is a very happy young woman,, yes she has challenges but if we had EXCEPTED their advice she would not be what she is today❤❤❤

Hi I saw a previous video where you said that you told your friend on the night of the accident that you had a feeling that something bad was going to happen she looked at you surprised that you said that. My question is with that feeling you didn't decide to go home but continued enjoying your outing. Do you think kind of higher being was sending you a warning? I kind of don't believe in this stuff but just coincidence that the accident happened? I guess what are your thoughts on this? 😊

Hi there Eirin I think the most profound thing you spoke about tonight in this very very interesting video was the entire topic of acceptance. I am basically bed-bound I do get out, I have an aid that helps me. I have no paralysis of any kind but I have chronic illness and I also have complex PTSD so I have some issues psychiatrically that make it difficult for me and that's from having a lot of trauma in my life. But I now have an amazing psychologist and I asked her, well I want to learn to be able to accept what is going on with me and I don't really know how to do that. And she said the most profound thing. It's in the lines of what you were talking about tonight and what you understood about acceptance. She said to me, Why would you accept something that is awful? That would be ludicrous and it wouldn't be realistic at all. to accept the pain you're in the difficulty you're in to accept that which is awful that does not make sense at all. And then she talked to me about what you were told that it's more important to learn to adjust to these bad things or awful situations were in and how can we cope better with this trauma and pain and sadness etc. So I wanted to thank you so much for bringing that up because like you, it was becoming a bad thing that people kept telling me, have you accepted where you're at and I would say I don't know I mean what does that even mean. So now I never even try to do acceptance or anything like that. Thank you so much for a great video. You are dealing with so so much I don't know how you do it. You are a strong survivor and I'm glad that you are trying to do your best at coping with what's going on, living with what's going on and making the most of it. Thank you for sharing everything you did it's a pleasure to listen to you it's not a pleasure to see you in the situation you're in but I learned a lot. bless you

My situation isn’t nearly as serious as your very serious and difficult trial, but I just wanted to share something that has happened to me. I’ve had 8 major back surgeries and 2 lung surgeries and I’m on full-time oxygen ❤and I constantly get comments from people that tell me that “I need to accept my NEW normal!” My situation isn’t Normal For Me at all!! There’s no way I will ever accept my situation, it’s not normal for me so I keep doing my part to help my body get strong……never accepting what I go through! I can see that you are doing all you can do and I understand that and praise you for that…..because it can be hard and cause extra pain. I get it!

I appreciate your pain meds fear and understanding. I have been resistant but need medicine for my own pain and have addiction issues in my family so it’s hard. I also agree that there’s a fine line between depending and utilizing for maximum health in the ability to help rest and relax and sleep to side in daily enjoyment and quality of life as well as preventing damage from things like blood pressure being raised and anxiety from pain. On the flip side depending has its own risk and is so scary when you have seen opiates destroy people firsthand. Only you know what is the best and you can ask for external monitoring by your doctors but especially those closest to you. I feel that this is such a difficult decision when having family history of addiction. I can also appreciate declining brutal surgery after having been through so much. There’s a point where you can mentally work through a surgery when you are ready and if you are up to the challenge and currently you are fighting the pressure wound and working so hard on your role in the family and working on caregiver support, how and what you will need help with and who and what you will need personality wise. Having caregivers is a hard thing in and of itself and people don’t understand what it’s like depending on someone and trying to explain and direct to have help from another person who may believe things and do things differently than you might. You seem to have a good perspective on things and you are working hard daily on all the things you need to deal with and do. The pain alone tends to make decision making hard. I find it super cool that you are explaining so articulately what this process is for you and what the challenges that aren’t really visible are for you. I think you look amazing and are doing so well with managing and navigating the medical and mental health hurdles and also then doing the many plans and vlogging to provide some knowledge and info for people who may find themselves in a similar situation. Your own personal experience is a big story and very interesting to hear about. I am sending healing wishes for the pressure wound and recovery from that surgery as well as all the daily fulfillment you can handle that makes you feel content and comfortable and intellectually stimulated. I’m super impressed with you! I also love the part about accepting vs not accepting and just coming to terms with the accident impact. It’s a huge difference in perspective and more realistic to “come to terms with” over “accept”. Cheering for you over here!

am afraid to take narcotic medication for pain too. I was addicted to cigarettes for over 40 years before I was able to put them down but I replace the cigarettes with food so I just traded 1 addiction for another I tell the doctors do not prescribed narcotic painkillers because I don't need another addiction. I just get by with over the counter medications

Praise God for every tiny thing that you can do !!! God bless abundantly !! Wld like to add that your caregivers should have seen that your pressure sore was tunneling !!! All they needed was a qtip to measure. And a short log is good so incoming caregivers can know if there is anything different that they should know about. What about a skin flap ????

The wound was cared for by nurses who came 3x a week to check and change the dressing from the start; but it wasn’t deep visually. There was unfortunately a lot of fibrin which was surgically removed, and clearing out that tissue caused the depth it had - but it’s better now 😃 I learn something new with every sore 😅 Thank you and likewise! 🤍✨🕊️🙏

Have you ever tried a topical horse linimint on your sore painful areas? People who own horses are well aware of how important it is to relax their horses muscles and joints and relieve them of pain. It has helped me greatly. I suffer from severe head and back pain chronically. The linimint is clear, odorless and like a watery gel, rubs right in and I feel pain relief within about 30 minutes. You can also apply as much as you need to! People who use horse linimint also say they use it on themselves when they are sore. Their horses love it and so do the owners. Good luck to you, Eirin. You are a very strong woman.

I just had a thought, especially when you said you had a bone infection. Have your doctor's ever mentioned hyperbaric therapy, which is hyper oxygenation for your body. It helps the body heal. Your bed inflates and deflates, right? I think that helps move fluids in your body so there is some movement, which would help mitigate risk of blood clots? Thank you so much, Eirin for sharing yourself. I truly enjoy hearing that you are doing well, hearing details and extent of your issues, progress, life. You're truly amazing! Prayers

One thing that they used both for my husband and for my mom when she had to be in bed a lot was an alternating pressure air mattress topper I know it really made a difference, especially since my husband had to lie on his back most of the time. The doctors did emphasize certain nutrients also, Vitamins A and C, Protein, Zinc and Iron, and said that complete healing would come much faster if you had a diet that was rich in those. They also used a wound vac on a couple of his pressure sores and he had to go to the hospital every couple of weeks to have the wound debrided.

I have had spinal injuries and spinal fusion surgeries on my cervical spine. I was not paralyzed, but the injuries caused excruciating knots in my shoulders and trapezius muscles. My husband would use full force elbows to try to get deep enough into the knots to give me relief from unrelenting pain that frequently brought me to tears. I could only get relief for a few hours until my first spinal fusion surgery. I have had two fusions that have failed in at least one level and need a third fusion that I am not rushing to endure. In the meantime, my paint doctor injects BOTX into my extreme knots in my shoulders and the injections have changed my life in many ways. They only last for three months at a time and I get them for migraines as well. Botox is a game changer for me. You might want to ask your doctor about trying it in out for your shoulder knots.

You are amazing. I had a thalamic stroke which damaged my internal temperature and nerves. Because the thalamus is the relay roadway for our body, my nerves are all messed up. The pain is horrid. I'm out a little over year with not much improvement from initial stroke and now the nerve damage is causing my body to arch off bed and jerk, my legs, my hands, my teeth chatter, very painful. I also don't feel anything from rib cage to my bottom. I only eat because I have too. This "traveling" nerve pain is scarry because you have no control over your body and shoots your pain to a level that no one understands. What did you call this A..something. I will pray for you.

I agree with your friends outlook in regards to acceptance. I intuitively feel that your intuition doesn't accept it because although its your reality you live with in "disabled" state (I hate defining anything as disabled because in the very word its states ABLE although thats how the word is used to emphases an understanding in todays society. I feel that words carry energy and the word disabled is very limiting)I feel your soul knows it has far more in store for you and this situation is only a road bump but will not limit your purpose in this life time.(In no sense do I want disregard your situation not my intention..but I want emphasize your life mission can and will still be accomplished given such physical/emotional traumatizing situation you have lived) I personally feel like accepting becomes like limitation and acceptance of its limits of such condition. I feel your intuition is declining that state of mind. In your shoes I think I would be in the same mindset. I am sure it comes with a lot of questions. As you have shared and navigated and continue to navigate. Thank you for sharing your story and mindset with such balanced outlook. Sending you love always! I wanted to share if you have considered colloidal silver or CBD lotion applied to skin (we naturally have endocannabinoids in our human body) and its healing affects ( supplementing giving the body fire to make more of it). Not doctor but many have shared great natural medicinal benefits make sure you do your research and see if it can benefit you and does not contradict medications you maybe taking.

Thank you ❤️ First of all; know that with anger or lashing out - it has to do with the individual grieving and processing pain and trauma - you are not to blame ❤️ Second; people in general need to feel seen, heard and validated - so allowing them to explain their needs and preferences is a good way to try and create a mutual trust and respect. In a situation where the patient can’t communicate very well, explaining what you’re doing and why you are doing it while you are aiding them, can help them relax more - also acknowledging that you know it can be cold, warm, uncomfortable, painful etc. ❤️ You are wonderful for asking and good luck! 💖

I’ve asked if I could do some changes, in many different ways, in order to sleep longer, but that increases the risk of developing new sores, so I have come to terms with having to do as they say. I just hope I’m more than halfway to a healed sore, but time will tell ✨

If the nerves and everything was severed does that mean your limbs are extremely tight? I imagine it’s very painful😔 you are so strong and thank you for teaching us. I wish all resources were available to all

Thank you! ❤️ If I keep up with physical therapy; it helps, but it eventually happens if not.

Hello! I was wondering if you’re able to use an electric wheelchair. Also, I would love to meet Thro, your fur baby. 🤗✨💕

I’m so sorry to hear that, must be exhausting 😓❤️ He bought a mini Therabody, I believe, but it was too intense for my nerves, so we’re looking for a better option for me. I hope you find something that relieves some of your pain ✨

@Eirin Cecilie Gjedrem Erin there would be no way I could use it if it hurts you. My body is extremely fragile. I hate saying the word fragile but that's what my body is. My pain and suffering is 10 out of 10 most days and hours. I just try not to talk about it because I can't fix it and there's no sense in me crying today because tomorrow I'm going to need my strength to carry on. I'll just wait to hear from your next video if you found something gentle to massage your body.
