I honestly draw/paint alot and quite frankly it's the only thing I've ever been "talented" at and not to mention it's the strongest passion I've had for anything, I've only ever drawn anime, and fan art. But I've read and studied alot about this issue for the past few months. I never draw with the intention of competing or mocking Allah's creation, but on the other hand if Allah does not like it, then I have no choice but to stop. Maybe he gave me this talent, ability, and passion as a means for me to sacrifice it for his sake, perhaps that's the goodness in all this for me. It worries me and is a bit painful for me, but I am willing to let it go, Insha'Allah Allah makes it easier for me and for other people who are also willing to do the same, for only he knows our intentions behind doing this act are not evil, but if the act itself is something that he does not approve then Insha'Allah he forgives us and makes it easy on us to let it go, Ameen!

Beautiful!! I believe it is ok to draw inanimate objects. Also if you draw animate objects than outlines are ok. So distinguishing features such as the face.

Drawing used to be a great passion of mine, until I heard the hadith. I have not drawn anything for years, I'm even afraid of painting landscapes. It is said that whatever the prophet gives you take it and whatever he forbids abstain from it. It is not befitting for the believers to have a say in a matter after Allah and his messenger have passed it. What we should say is, we hear and we obey even though we do not understand. Scholars are humans and will say some things out of their own desires. I'd rather not meet Allah and say, " this scholar said I should ignore the hadith" as an excuse. I'd rather not. We can always find something else to be passionate about, for me, I found writing and I love it. Keep it up bro, paradise is circled with limitations and things the heart doesn't desire.

@@abbysheyba8421 you are right. I stop myself from drawing living creature after i read the hadiths. Actually, Im into figurative drawing. I believe this is a trial for us. Islam mean to submit to allah. When prophet ibrahim being told to sacrifice his son, he just did it to obey allah's order. He may not question why but he obeyed. It a test of iman and tawheed. Dunya is a test and it is temporary. Maybe we can divert our passion into something else.

I know that your comment is pretty old but I still want to share my thoughts. When I was younger, in my teenage years, I used to draw people and animals and I received a lot of praise for my work. I truly loved doing portraits and was heartbroken when I discovered that it was allegedly haram. Thankfully at my young age, I had enough iman to give up what I loved for the sake of God. Just as the scholar in the video, I can't make sense of why it would be prohibited, it doesn't make any sense to me and I hope God isn't angry with me for that. However, I just take it as one of those things that I will never understand and will just have to trust God about. Even if that hadith is false or misinterpeted, it's not worrh gambling my afterlife for. I abandoned drawing and discovered my talent and love for painting last year. I do landscapes, seascapes, flowers and all sorts of other things which have proven far more fun for me than drawing on paper. I hope that you will eventually find some other way of expressing your creativity, God didn't give you that talent by accident.

When I heard about this hadith I was shattered. I am still sad and it's affecting my health. I thought of leaving drawing but I am not able to. I am going to depression now. I don't want to make Allah angry at all but I don't want to live like this as well. They say you can draw unanimated objects but that doesn't help, I believe art is something boundless and if you are restricting it, It dies there. Art is a very big support in my life as I have OCD, it helps me keep calm. Now I am nowhere. I don't want to make Allah angry and I don't want to leave it as well. 😔

My daughter is in art school at an advanced level. At the time I found out about this ruling it was already "too late". Still, there are several solutions or gradual changes artists like her and you can apply to their artwork. I try to tell that to my daughter as well. It's really hard though, because for her, her drawing art is also a way of expressing her emotions. And a way to deal with the stress of everyday life. I don't know (in the kind of art each of you are making) if it is possible to adjust some things in your artwork. For example, leaving out certain parts of the body when drawing something human-like? Like the neck or the nose? (See in the video in the link below.) As I mentioned, do it gradually. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala knows your struggle and He knows what is in your heart. Ask Him to guide you, He will make it easy for you. Btw, I also suffer from OCD and depression and I know how extremely difficult it is. Please, try not to be too hard on yourself or to be perfect. Furthermore, listening to Qur'an recitations has a healing effect. It really eases the mind ánd body. To me it's much more than that. I hope my words helped a little. Before I forget: Eid Mubarak! May Allah Azza Wa Jal reward you for your fasting and give you both strength and perseverance. Aameen. "Everything's Haram Gun": kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYaC27iHYLzAZJc.html

Quick note: The Hadith referring to the punishment of image-makers is, according to the majority opinion of scholars from what I’ve researched, to do with idols that are created to compete with Allah, and for the intention of being worshipped, and DOESNT apply to people making art for the sake of art. HOWEVER, just because I said this doesn’t mean it’s 100% halal because it’s still a topic that has a lot of difference of opinion. I only mention this because I feel like some scholars use that Hadith in the wrong context to strike fear in fellow Muslims that could drive them to depressions (I’ve seen comments about this and honestly it isn’t right at all). I hope with this information I laid out it will put some hearts at ease Inshaallah. Allah knows best and it’s better to stay away from doubtful matters anyway.

The scholars who hold this view argue that the texts that prohibit image making are to be understood in the context of the state the people were in at the advent of Islam. The people had just emerged from the times of ignorance and from idolatry. After people became distanced from the worship of images, the prohibition was no longer necessary. There are different ways to interpret the verse. Context matters a lot in Islam. For example, in the Quran 9:5 it says to kill the disbelievers wherever you find the after Ramadan. It doesn't mean that you should actually kill all the disbelievers wherever you find them because the context tells us that the actual meaning of the verse was to only kill the disbelievers who were in a war with the ummah and had disobeyed a treaty. The same thing applies to the hadiths about drawing. The context was that meccans used to worship drawings and idols and the hadiths were meant to prevent them from doing so. But if you do not have the intention to mock allah or to worship the drawings then it is absolutely fine to draw in my opinion.

My View: See If You Draw Something and Having In Your Mind That You Are Competing God Creation (As Hadith Says That We Are Competing God Creation) That That's Prohibited. But If You Draw With Pure Heart ❤️ Our Allah Is Above All This, He Knows What's In Our Heart. So Don't Be Afraid That's Normal.

i've been drawing all my life and have degree in 3D animation, it would literally ruin my life if i can't draw if it was considered Haram. I've never even thought about competing with Allah swt when drawing or doing a 3D model, all i think when doing it is to have fun in doing so. Allah swt can literally create life while i think(not think but literally can't) i can't and will not be able to do so in my whole life. So reading the hadith making me a bit skeptical since Allah will humiliate those who make an image of something by challenging the artist to give life to their drawing. What if the artist never intended to challenge Allah swt to begin with? What if the artist never intended to give life to their drawing and know that only Allah swt can do it? Also in Muhammad saw time, drawing and sculpting lead to idoltry and worship while nowadays people don't think that at all. I think it was important to give context on that time as to why the prophet prohibited it in the first place.

@Eli_Muwahhid ah thank you! Since it was so weird to me how a drawing of something was punished deeply even if the artist doesn't mean any harm in it especially shirk. It was a good idea to give context in Muhammad S.A.W. time, since his time is where most idol worshipers sculpt and paint to worship their idol.

I don't want to cause any trouble for anyone (myself included) and am wondering if they can do an abstract self-portrait- basically a collage in which they think of favorite books, music, stories, etc and use those images to portray themselves.

We can always find something else to be passionate about, for me, I found writing and I love it. paradise is circled with limitations and things the heart doesn't desire.

The modernist approach is to understand the message that the prophet was getting at in his time and place in his society, not the literal word for word action that he directed, and apply that message to our modern world. And as you know, there is also a great deal of doubt about the validity of many ahadith, even Bukhari and Muslim. The prophet discouraged the writing of ahadith because he was worried that they would conflict with the message of the Quran.

I believe the prohibition of some drawings, paintings and sculpting among Muslims (not all), or as a strong tradition, is a big mistake that had important consequences. I think some abstract visual arts were important for the Sciences progression in the Islamic world, but the limitations also limited that progression. Math and physics (including Astronomy) was studied and developed with drawings, prose and poetry. Those drawings were abstract and minimalist. But in natural sciences, at some point, the mindset should be different, more concrete. Trying to draw what you see helps you understand better what you see. It's like studying. That was very important for anatomy.

I do think for myself, but my religion guides my thought process and I trust in God and know that he knows what is best for me. Lastly, no, I don’t only have this life, in islam we believe in an after life, and there I will have all the happiness and freedom. Making sacrifices in this world is definitely worth the reward of the afterlife, this life is a test and it’s supposed to be challenging haha. Either way, I am enjoying my life :))

@Beech yes, we believe we were created by a higher being, someone unlike us and He created us and gave us life so its only logical that we worship Him and enslave ourselves to Him. We do what He tell us to because we believe whatever He has told us to do or forbidden for us is for our own benefit. If you believe you're created by a higher being, you would want to know why that Creator created you (with what purpose) And we as Muslims believe Qur'an is the word of God, where He tells us how to live Please don't think that this oppresses us, rather it actually gives us guidance and makes us better versions of ourselves :)

If it was easy then it wouldn't be a test. Some people have a difficult time giving up alcohol, others have difficult time giving up fornication, we have a difficult time giving up drawing. That is what we are being tested with. Just be patient and not draw humans and animals. If you need to draw then draw inanimate objects like trees and landscapes or just paint random colors to get it out of your system. You will be able to paint all of what your heart desires in Jannah. For years I’ve had a dream of becoming a artist and a animator (this channel is my animation channel) I heard the Hadith and I don’t want to twist the prophets (SAW) words! Within these year of practicing I wasn’t that Islamic and I didn’t pray at all but I was focusing my time on how to get better at drawing anime. I wanted to drawing my own oc’s (original character) and make a song in the background and they relate to the song kinda like a animatic of something. For 2 years I practiced and I’m at a semi pro level. I made all my characters backgrounds and their appearances, I listened to 100 + songs( most that have bad language in them) and wanted my characters to sing it or relate to the song. I written more than 50 things they can do in each song over the years. And to finally when I’m at a stage I can publish my animatics “I FIND OUT ITS HARAM TO DRAW?!!!!!” I couldn’t believe it! Then I search everywhere for a answer and some were saying it’s haram and some were saying it’s not! I was confused, so I listened to the ones who are saying it’s not haram. But after that every time I drew a anime or manga character I had a big doubt and it was killing me from the inside my heart was hurting! I didn’t continue to draw and felt miserable the whole 3 days. I felt lost. All these years of work for nothing? Even when my family was struggling I bought pencils and thought to myself I’ll make them rich!? By the way it’s the third day and I finally am ready to give up art. It says it clearly in the Hadith. Listen to your heart and if it’s in doubt even if you spend years on it give it up for Allah. And inshallah god will give you better. And have patience. If you can’t draw in this word. And still want to draw in the next. He will give it to you. Now I don’t know what to do. I do like instruments so I’ll try finding something new. May Allah make it easy for us all. I even bought a laptop and drawing pad. So The reason I’m telling you that is because I will give up anything for god. Oh and I got a lot of anime drawing books about 500 + books and 2000 + videos of drawing anime that I’ll never read or watch.

The Swagy Cookie after a couple of days I didn’t feel like drawing and didn’t feel sad at all even though I wanted to. Some more days after I have a dream where I ask a scholar a question about something (i can’t remember what the question was but I was something not related to art) and the scholar replied that it was only forbidden in the prophets time and is now allowed. So In my head I though does that mean art is allowed? Then my dream ended. After that I’ve been drawing faces The doubt that was once there has disappeared, I have nothing hurting my heart. So yes I still draw faces and plan on drawing my animatics. I now have something I didn’t have before. A peaceful and happy heart. That is probably because I’ve started to pray and focused most of my time on god. Right now I’m confused. But I’m confused and happy. If it’s wrong then may god forgive me. I’ve asked my local scholar and he said he’ll find out for me. So I’ll await for him to give me my answer.

I really appreciate Dr Ally's answer on this perplexing question. He always approaches an issue from a learned position with with cool reasoning and a lifetime of study. Art within Islam has fascinated me for a long time, though I am not a muslim. Unlike the other major Abrahamic faiths, Islam has particular Hadiths which can cause much costination, especially is that individual is an artist. I myself am a portrait painter and have painted several Muslims friends and colleagues. I often wondered how a Muslim with an interest in drawing could be gifted with such a nature, if it was not from Allah himself? Through out history there have been many great Islamic portrait artists, and clearly they were not creating idols or anything to be worshiped, but instead recording important figures with in the great tapestry of Islamic history. This, I believe, is also a view shared by the great of scholars of the Al-Azhar University. God willing (there is only one God and Muhammad was his prophet), Dr. Ally's answer will go some way to help those struggling with concerns regarding drawing and portrait art.

'Aisha reported that Gabriel (peace be upon him) made a promise with Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) to come at a definite hour; that hour came but he did not visit him. And there was in his hand (in the hand of Allah's Apostle) a staff. He threw it from his hand and said: Never has Allah or His messengers (angels) ever broken their promise. Then he cast a glance (and by chance) found a puppy under his cot and said: 'Aisha, when did this dog enter here? She said: BY Allah, I don't know He then commanded and it was turned out. Then Gabriel came and Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said to him: You promised me and I waited for you, but you did not come, whereupon he said: It was the dog in your house which prevented me (to come), for we (angels) do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture.

I would be encouraging somebody to believe this viewpoint, even when given no Hadith as evidence, just because even during the times of the prophets (as/saw) Muslim people were creating images of each other and the animal kingdom, this has carried on for hundreds of years and is even embedded in some Asian Islamic cultures. It is up to you what you choose to believe with the evidence you research and read. So after conducting plenty of research and thinking, here is my perspective of drawing that some might find enlightening. There are 3 views Islamic scholars have concluded about drawing. 1. All types of drawings ,paintings, animations, statues, and sculptures of living or animate beings are haram
 2. Only handmade images of living or animate beings are haram, not computer animations. 3. All types of drawings ,paintings, animations, statues, and sculptures of living or animate beings are allowed as long as they are not created for haram purposes such as idolatry or challenging Allah (SWT). View #1 is based on the Bukhari hadith claiming, "Every image maker will be thrown in the fire. And on the Day of Judgement he will be told to put life in them." This hadith has been interpreted to refer to only living (animate) things such as humans and animals. You might wonder what is the reasoning behind this? One answer was that if someone is to draw these they are challenging Allah (SWT) creations. In other words, believing or thinking they are a better creator than Allah (SWT). So ask yourself, has Allah (SWT) created numerous other things such as rivers, lakes, streams, mountains, clouds, plants, deserts, tundras, stars, the sun, the moon, planets, and the galaxy? Why is it not considered a challenge when someone uses art to create any one of those things mentioned? Allah (SWT) knows your intentions behind your reasoning of creating art. If it is not to do haram things like worship them or challenge Allah (SWT), isn't that acceptable? View #2 has been claimed due to a Bukhari hadith referring to the image maker as a "musawwir". Which is the Arabic word for a person who draws images. So ask yourself, is it understandable for Allah (SWT) to forbid handmade drawing but allow technological drawings? Also, computer animations may rely on handmade drawings. Some scholars have even claimed that any animation containing a living or animate beings is haram. Taking this into consideration, the creation of every single cartoon show containing humans or animals would be a haram act. The creation of every single video game containing humans or animals would be a haram act. It would not end there. Watching, playing, and purchasing video games containing animations of humans or animals would also be a haram act. Allah (SWT) tells us in the Quran (59:7), Which translates to, "What God has bestowed On His Messenger (and taken Away) from the people Of the townships,-belongs To God,-to His Messenger And to kindred and orphans, The needy and the wayfarer ; In order that it may not (Merely) make a circuit Between the wealth among you. So take what the Messenger Assigns to you, and deny Yourselves that which he Withholds from you. And fear God ; for God Is strict in Punishment." As muslims, we are supposed to abstain from what is haram. For example, drinking, purchasing , and selling alcohol would be haram. Therefore, the same concept would apply to human and animal animations. Does Islam forbid watching all cartoons containing people and animals? Does Islam forbid playing EA sports FIFA because it contains animations of people? Once again, Allah (SWT) knows your intentions behind your reasoning of creating art. Nowhere in the Quran does it prohibit the creation drawing, painting, animating, etc. Reflecting back on the prophet's times there were reported to be idol worshippers. The Bukhari hadith preventing image making is very controversial. View #3, all types of drawings ,paintings, animations, statues, and sculptures of living or animate beings are allowed as long as they are not created for haram purposes such as idolatry or challenging Allah (SWT). That view is logical correct?

I loved to draw faces and anime and I still miss it almost everyday... I have tried to draw sceneries but just could not draw it as well or as easily as pictures... Nevertheless I have stopped drawing faces... But have always been confused by this Hadith... If you read the Quran... There are so many places Allah says he spoke to the earth,.. many things like mountains and trees, clouds, rain etc listen to HIm and obey HIm.. there is even one where the earth or something is given a choice of free will like man and it refuses ... if these are objects without life how is it possible ?? And also aren't we to consider that everything will be brought back to life on the day of judgement... The earth will spit out everything that has done to it etc... Many objects which we consider non living will be able to speak and bear witness... I dunno .. I have just followed the Hadith because it's what has been told but have been confused a lot... Anyone can clear this out?

Human beings are His best creations...we are perfectly fashioned in the best way...better than the mountains and trees n animals...so it's a different case when it comes to drawing humans...we often call ourselves or others ugly...calling Allah's creations ugly...we draw cartoons however we want n we find them more beautiful..it's not our intent but we should try to gain a lesson here...we do compare real life with drawings. We do find anime more attractive than ppl in real life. The lesson is...learn to appreciate God's beauty more, don't try to change it or "make it better".

Well actually there are two types of Hadith. Hadith Qudsi which is The words of God in the words of the Prophet (May Allah's Blessings and Peace be upon Him), it's In Arabic It is not used in forms of worship. And then there is Hadith Nabawi which are The words of the Prophet (May Allah's blessings and peace be upon Him) In Arabic. AND they Give us extra details about the forms of worship we are to do that is not in the Quran. The hatih nabawi aren't mentioned in the quran because these were, in a way an extention of the prophet saw's life. What he told us in the Hadith is what we should do beacause what he told us and the Sahaba was his lifestyle, it how we should live our lives too. So if you are saying that Hadith were made by non prophets you are wrong. Hadith were made by Allah and his prophet saw and they were collected by great people such as imam Bukhari and Iman Muslims in books so that we may follow our prophets ways. Ps. Forgive me if I made any mistakes

Photo taking for purposes that really matter is allowed just like how drawing is (like for educational purpose). Photos aren't supposed to be hung on walls just like drawing aren't supposed to be. And creating pictures of lifeless objects are allowed (By lifeless I mean trees, rocks and such) There are many divisions in Islam and as such the ruling may differ but just one region of Muslims cannot be taken as an example. There are many other Islamic countries too, like UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar etc.
