Drawing is NOT forbidden. With respect to depicting human and animal life, scholars of Islamic Law present a spectrum of opinion, running the gamut from those who view all image-making to be lawful to those who categorically prohibit all drawings of animal life. The First Opinion: Some scholars hold the view that image making is essentially lawful. It is permissible to make two-dimensional illustrations as well as three-dimensional statues. The scholars who hold this view argue that the texts that prohibit image making are to be understood in the context of the state the people were in at the advent of Islam. The people had just emerged from the times of ignorance and from idolatry. After people became distanced from the worship of images, the prohibition was no longer necessary. This is why we see in some history books that when the Muslims opened up the lands of the Persians and Romans, they did not interfere with the pictures and statues found there. The Second Opinion: Some scholars hold the view that all images are unlawful, make two-dimensional illustrations as well as three-dimensional statues. They base their argument on the apparent meaning of a number of texts. These include the following: `A’ishah relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The people who will be most severely punished on the Day of Resurrection will be those who aspire to create like Allah.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (5954) and Sahîh Muslim (2107)] Ibn ``Abbâs relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Every image maker is in the Fire. For each image he made, a being will be fashioned to torment him in Hell.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (2225) and Sahîh Muslim (2110) - The wording accords with al-Bukhârî] Abû Talhah relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The angels do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or images representing (people or animals).” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (3225) and Sahîh Muslim (2106)] The Third Opinion: Other scholars hold a view that is intermediate between the former two. They argue that only three-dimensional images are prohibited. Those are the images being referred to by hadîth like “Every image maker is in the Fire.” They argue that only the manufacture of three-dimensional images can possibly be described as “aspiring to create like Allah.” Moreover, statues and not illustrations are the objects that people are most likely to take as objects of worship. The drawings and illustrations to be found on cloth, on paper, and decorating walls are, therefore, not objectionable. After considering all of the evidence, the opinion that appears to be the strongest of the three is the last opinion. The reasons why it is the strongest opinion are as follows: 1. The question of a person aspiring to create like Allah is really a question of that person’s intent. It is an action of the heart and it is tantamount to unbelief. A person who acts with such intent is in a state of unbelief, regardless of whether he is making replicas of animals or of inanimate objects like trees, rocks, rivers, or mountains. This is the reason for the prohibition against the image making in the hadîth. This is the reason why the image makers are being cursed. This is clarified by another hadîth where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Allah says: ‘Who does a greater wrong than one who aspires to creates as I create - a grain of corn, a seed, or a barleycorn?” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (7559) and Sahîh Muslim (2111) - The wording accords with al-Bukhârî] Therefore, if the reason for the prohibition is that of aspiring to create like Allah creates, then the subject matter is irrelevant. It makes no difference if the image is that of an animal or an inanimate object. 2. The manufacture of statuary is unlawful because this activity is only carried out in order to aggrandize the subject. Such aggrandizement poses a danger of veneration and worship. The same can be said for photographs of prominent people when those photographs are erected high up in prominent places to be honored. In this case, such pictures become most certainly unlawful. The story of Noah’s people and how their making of statues in commemoration of their pious forebears led to their idolatry is clear proof of this danger. In our day and age, we see the pictures of many people displayed in public places for the purpose of false veneration. When we look at the generality of the statement - “Every image maker is in the Fire” -such a general statement cannot literally apply except to a great sin. This sin is that of willfully and intentionally aspiring to create like Allah. The word “every” that begins this sentence is the strongest word for indicating generality. Since it is then annexed to the indefinite noun “image maker” it linguistically indicates that generality is intended. The sentence is similar in structure to Allah’s words: “Every soul shall taste of death.” [Sûrah Al `Imrân: 185] When we look at the phrase - “those who aspire to create like Allah” - the term “aspire” here indicates a challenge. It means that these image makers are fashioning images in order to imitate Allah’s creative abilities and to present a challenge to Allah. We see in another hadîth related by Ibn `Abbâs that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Those people who make these images in this world will be punished on Day of Resurrection. They will be commanded to breathe life into what they had created.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (5951) and Sahîh Mulsim (2108)] This specifies for us the meaning of “Every image maker is in the Fire” and the other hadîth mentioned above. All of the hadîth about image making refer to the intent of image maker to aspire to create like Allah. We find in the texts mention of many other major sins that are certainly worse that the making of images - like adultery, taking usury, and abusing parents - without it being declared that the perpetrators of those sins are consigned to the Fire, like we find in “Every image maker is in the Fire”. This should make it even clearer to us that those who make images without the intention of aspiring to create like Allah are not included in the generality of the hadîth’s meaning. Rather, the hadîth applies to all of those who have the intention of aspiring to create like Allah. 3. If we look at the statements of the Pious Predecessors, we can see that they understood the texts about image making to be merely a severe warning against what is sinful rather than a direct prohibition. For instance, when a man who was a professional image maker came to Ibn `Abbâs asking him for a ruling, Ibn `Abbâs merely said: “If you have to do so, then make images of trees and of that which has no soul. [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (2225) and Sahîh Muslim (2110)] Ibn `Abbâs was neither harsh with him nor did he make any categorical statement. He said nothing more than that. We find that the Pious Predecessors generally made statements about image making that indicated nothing more than pious reserve and avoiding that which can lead to deviance. 4. Many types of images produced today are meant for education and can hardly be dispensed with. One pictorial representation can often suffice for hundreds of words. We can see that `A’ishah used to play with dolls, and they were three-dimensional images. Such toys are permitted by the sacred texts. Scholars explain this permissibility by saying that the purpose behind such images is one of instruction and educational play. The ruling, then, applies to the general cause and not to the particular instance that illustrates this cause. If three-dimensional figures are permitted for children for education and constructive play, then it is even more appropriate that such images be permitted for adults, since adults are required to learn a far greater range of more difficult and critical skills. In today’s world, images - especially two-dimensional images - are indispensable for people to carry out the necessary activities of life. The ruling that such images are permissible is in harmony with the general ease and facility of Islamic Law. Allah says: “Allah wants to make things easy for you, and he does not want things to be difficult for you.” [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 185]

It doesn't matter you agree or not...Allah is the King! The point is... Allah gave this ability to you to see what would you do? Choose the right or the wrong! If you are given the power to draw... Then write verses, do paint sceneries... please Allah....! This should be your motive.... Those who don't agree...I have only one thing for them....and that's if you'll leave something for Allah, He'll give you something... You never expected... And for me? My life changed completely! When I left drawing faces, I got...my Lord♥ His love! I feel him everywhere! And in Quran it says: If you love Allah, then obey me (Prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H ), and Allah will love you too! And.. Prophet Muhammad prohibited to draw the living....because the people who'll draw the living...will get the severest punishment on the day of Judgement! Ata'at means to do something without questioning♥ Loving your Lord means obeying him♥ When Ibrahim (A.s) were ordered to sacrifice his son Ismail.. He didn't say... I wouldn't do it? Or what's the point of doing it or anything like that! He just obeyed! And what was the reward? His son was safe and sound! Dear Brother and Sisters, I know it's hard! But...when you'll love your Lord, automatically... You'll try to leave the sins... And obey him...! Now, if anyone wishes to feel Allah's love to the peak! I'll say.. What can you do to please your Lord? Sir, What do you think? Can i motivate others? I am an artist... And designer.. And yup I also have a good voice.... I want to be a motivational speaker... But I am 16 only 🙈🙈

When I was a kid I always liked to draw, and I was pretty good at it. Last time I made a "face" was about 4 months ago, and I wanted to start drawing daily and then I started to look more into Islam and what's haram and what is not, things from there got complicated. Even also listening to music, I still can't find an answer, it's also a war between "it's all haram" "only if it has a bad message" "if someone is singing it's haram" "only vocals are accepted" ecc. The thing is, Muslim scholars in the golden age drew all the time. I think this Hadith is referring to deisized drawings. That makes soo much sense considering that drawings were made for worship back in the day. People need to stop taking hadith/Quran at face value and think about it on a deeper level. Thats my take.

i mean it seems most logical. if all drawings were haram then any teenager trying to find an entertaining hobby that includes art would have been destined for that punishment. it seems logical that it refers to intention. i feel like we should just not try to make it into something that isn’t digital, cuz i doubt that any smart person would worship a screen.

If you are confused about something, isn't it better to not do it at all to be on the safe side? The what ifs might turn into sins and doubts when you could easily prevent them. Also remember, this whole life is a test. Allah gave many people talents because that is their test in life. Some people are gifted with beautiful voices, some people have intelligence, and some people have extreme beauty. All of these are tests to see what we do with the gifts given by Allah swt. Would we use our beautiful voices to sing or recite the Quran? Would we use our intelligence for good or commit evil? You get the gist. I have talent in drawing anime and realism but never plants and nature. However, recently I gave up drawing realism and focusing on painting nature and even though it's hard, I feel better knowing I am doing it for the sake of Allah. May Allah make it easy for us all. Ameen.

Contrary to challenging Allah, drawing had a different effect on me. When I realized just how attached I was to my drawing which were, in every way imaginable, inferior to us (Allah's creations), I just slightly understood how much Allah must love all of us (it's said that it is 70 times as much as a mother) whom He declared to be the crowns of His creations. Probably it's seen as shirk because that's a way of think that we can create something that only Allah almighty can do... But I am 100% convinced that I or anyone can't create anything, only Allah can and I have good intentions to draw. Now about your question, honestly I have researched so much on this topic and I still have no idea. The hadith are quite confusing mainly because of their language and how they conflict with the Prophet's soft way of speaking and also because of the overexaggeration of the hadith which suggest that they might've been forged. These are all of course MY unprofessional opinions. I am genuinely suspicious of the hadith not being authentic so instead of taking a risk, I look at the source itself- The Quran and follow what God directly has had.

Problem here is it’s just all “WE” think. But the The hadith was so generalized with no exceptions. And the jumhor goes with the likely opinion which is the prohibition of animate drawings in general. I do draw faces down to the neck only, but aside from being proud and happy of my progress, I’ve always felt worried that this something wrong to do. Prophet Muhammad Pbuh certainly knows more than we do. And this hadith was so generalized which led to it being controversial. 😔 I guess I’ll never find the answer but I’ll be at least getting rid of that feeling of being worried and guilt.

So after conducting plenty of research and thinking, here is my perspective of drawing that some might find enlightening. There are 3 views Islamic scholars have concluded about drawing. 1. All types of drawings ,paintings, animations, statues, and sculptures of living or animate beings are haram
 2. Only handmade images of living or animate beings are haram, not computer animations. 3. All types of drawings ,paintings, animations, statues, and sculptures of living or animate beings are allowed as long as they are not created for haram purposes such as idolatry or challenging Allah (SWT). View #1 is based on the Bukhari hadith claiming, "Every image maker will be thrown in the fire. And on the Day of Judgement he will be told to put life in them." This hadith has been interpreted to refer to only living (animate) things such as humans and animals. You might wonder what is the reasoning behind this? One answer was that if someone is to draw these they are challenging Allah (SWT) creations. In other words, believing or thinking they are a better creator than Allah (SWT). So ask yourself, has Allah (SWT) created numerous other things such as rivers, lakes, streams, mountains, clouds, plants, deserts, tundras, stars, the sun, the moon, planets, and the galaxy? Why is it not considered a challenge when someone uses art to create any one of those things mentioned? Allah (SWT) knows your intentions behind your reasoning of creating art. If it is not to do haram things like worship them or challenge Allah (SWT), isn't that acceptable? View #2 has been claimed due to a Bukhari hadith referring to the image maker as a "musawwir". Which is the Arabic word for a person who draws images. So ask yourself, is it understandable for Allah (SWT) to forbid handmade drawing but allow technological drawings? Also, computer animations may rely on handmade drawings. Some scholars have even claimed that any animation containing a living or animate beings is haram. Taking this into consideration, the creation of every single cartoon show containing humans or animals would be a haram act. The creation of every single video game containing humans or animals would be a haram act. It would not end there. Watching, playing, and purchasing video games containing animations of humans or animals would also be a haram act. Allah (SWT) tells us in the Quran (59:7), Which translates to, "What God has bestowed On His Messenger (and taken Away) from the people Of the townships,-belongs To God,-to His Messenger And to kindred and orphans, The needy and the wayfarer ; In order that it may not (Merely) make a circuit Between the wealth among you. So take what the Messenger Assigns to you, and deny Yourselves that which he Withholds from you. And fear God ; for God Is strict in Punishment." As muslims, we are supposed to abstain from what is haram. For example, drinking, purchasing , and selling alcohol would be haram. Therefore, the same concept would apply to human and animal animations. Does Islam forbid watching all cartoons containing people and animals? Does Islam forbid playing EA sports FIFA because it contains animations of people? Once again, Allah (SWT) knows your intentions behind your reasoning of creating art. Nowhere in the Quran does it prohibit the creation drawing, painting, animating, etc. Reflecting back on the prophet's times there were reported to be idol worshippers. The Bukhari hadith preventing image making is very controversial. View #3, all types of drawings ,paintings, animations, statues, and sculptures of living or animate beings are allowed as long as they are not created for haram purposes such as idolatry or challenging Allah (SWT). That view is logical correct?

To be on the safe side, avoid drawing living things altogether, you can still draw landscapes, buildings, vehicles, robots, dolls, etc. those aren't living things, as for humanoid things such as robots and dolls, don't make all the facial features, perhaps use an anime style for it, anime tends to not have eyes, mouth, many times no nose, if you are drawing environment and need to draw living figures, surely shades are enough to fill the gap inside. Again Allah swt knows best, always keep digging deeper each day.

The answer to your question is: No, there’s nothing wrong with drawing in Islam, but there are Islamic guidelines to follow. The notion that drawing is forbidden in Islam has been believed by lots of people and Muslims because of very strict Muslim scholars, and because “Drawing is haram” is pretty much the first answer you’ll get when you search it up online. The thing that others aren’t aware of is that the “drawing should be avoided at all cost in Islam” is simply an extreme pre-caution given from some of the scholars, and sometimes, it’s even formed on their own opinions from their own interpretations of the verses from the Quran regarding about drawing. But don’t misunderstand, thinking that they're at fault. There are Islamic guidelines in drawing, that Muslims should be aware of. If drawing is haram in Islam, the community called Muslim Manga wouldn’t have existed in the first place, and those Islamic magazines with anime-oriented Islamic art wouldn’t be out in display for everyone to read and look. Heck, if drawing is haram, Qatar would have ban art classes and art school for Qataris and Muslims from different ethnicities from participating, and making a career out of it.

I was thinking the same thing... The core idea is Allah is preventing us from the worshipping of idols... Look at those civilisations which have idols and paintings.. Wallahi they are making naked picture of their gods and goddesses in disrespectful positions... That's what happen when you allow pictures... This Shaikh I don't know which aqaid he is from... But he will ruin our Imaan ... And that is why making pictures and statues have been prohibited... And one thing about prophet Solomon pbuh .. that we are the Ummah of final Messenger pbuh... Do you know in one earlier ayah of Quran Allah mentions that don't drink alcohol and come to prayer... At that time alcohol was not prohibited totally... And later it was totally prohibited... Islam is a religion that understands that a sudden change is not feasible and it has to be in progression ... And will happen gradually... And finally alcohol was made haram... SO THE MODERN MUSLIMS WILL YOU AGRUE THAT ALCOHOL IS HALAL??? likewise the final ruling on pictures come from the final Messenger... It's so haram that he didn't even enter a place which had curtains with pictures...

Despite both the things are created by the one and only Allah(SWT) and no one can ever create (astaghfirullah). They are like if we draw realistic things means we are competing with Allah(SWT) despite our intentions will be completely different at the time we draw. We can never ever think to compete with Him. Then if we draw nature ain't it be compatible? I have researched a lot and found no proper answer. Everyone is telling different things. I don't know I'm so messed up right now😳😳

Yeah I still don’t understand. I believe that the Quran says what is haram and what is halal. The Hadith should go into detail on the Quran. For example, the Quran said to pray, and the Hadith said how to pray. The Quran said that women should cover up and that men should lower their gaze. The Hadith says how women should cover up and how men should lower their gaze. I don’t believe that the Hadith can right out say that something is haram or halal when in the book of Allah it doesn’t (this applies to music too). Then again, the hadith could have been easily forged, because they didn’t take the precautions that they did with the Quran. I think I’ll continue to draw halal human figures (no gods, no awrahs etc.) until I get a straight up answer that is not a interpretation nor opinion of a scholar. To elaborate even more, drawings were worshipped and music was used to distract from iman back then, so if it doesn’t draw you away from Allah, then is halal. Allah knows best.

I also draw landscapes, plants, animals, etc. because I love them and see how beautiful they are. Like I said, I don't intend or want to challenge Allah's creations, I just want to draw them. I know we can't draw the prophets for sure, but does it make a difference if I create something that isn't actually a real human being? It's not like I want to actually make them or anything. The Quran says nothing about it and my mom draw human and realistic features, obviously we don't worship them I just need a clear answer, yes or no or yes, unless or no, unless. Then you say it is an Israelite belief that was misinterpreted. So are you suggesting that the prophet himself didn’t clearly prohibit drawing and sculpting?

My own personal opinion is that the Prophet (PBUH) wouldve forbidden picture-making because it was used for the sake of idol worship back then. Intrestingly enough, we find in the Quran that Prophet Solomon (PBUH) made statues of his own. This confirms a narrative in the old testament (to be more precise, in the books of kings) where Prophet Solomon (PBUH) made himself statues and carved pictures of palm trees, pomegranates and cherubim. (Cherubim is a happy, chubby innocent child that has two wings).

Wrong. Mushrikeen, idol worshippers, Catholics, Hindus, Christians and Buddhists use only a specific type of images, statues or pictures , not just any type of image. If there is a painting or a statue of Bill Cosby, Tom Cruise, or Htler, will any Christian or Hindu use those pictures for their ibada? No, A Christian will want an image of Christ, and a Hindu would only use an image of Krishna or some other deity. The prophet sal Allaahu alayhi, prohibited a certain category of pictures directly related to shirk , not all images of just any ordinary animal or human.

The classical ruling (the one held by the earliest Muslims and most probably by the companions of the prophet) is based on hadiths which many Muslim scholars of the past and the present hold to be authentic. It seems to me that the Sheikh is trying to 'modernise' Islam. Otherwise Islam would fail to seem logical. Just think for a second. What is so inherently wrong with drawing pictures of living beings? Prohibiting such a creative act seems absurd.

The core idea is Allah is preventing us from the worshipping of idols...

@@ziasmailbox PLEASE STOP. Allah never said statues were or pictures were bad and therefore Muhammad had no way to make such a ruling. Yes Allah does mention Solomon but at no point does he say that you can no longer make statues or pictures. Allah uses other messengers as references all the time. @saimah Wallahi when i am under the impression that the hobbies i love most are haram i feel no motivation to move at all. I was under the impression music was haram and i didn’t move from by bed for almost a whole day, until i found out that i was wrong. we literally have scholarly evidence that shows music is not haram, referring to the hadith in bukhari being ruled out. yesterday i was overthinking like i always do while watching one piece. btw watching anime is my favorite hobby. anyways, i started thinking that watching it is kufr because it’s imitating Allah’s creation. i was going insane. then i went to my father and told him about it and he simply told me that it’s just a cartoon that you enjoy, but don’t watch the shows that give someone the place of God. i was relaxed after that.

im no scholar or experienced in the islamic field, i am just an ordinary muslim who likes to draw comic/anime characters, and from what i've gathered, as long as you have the intention of just telling a story or just drawing a not too relaistic human, its fine. if your character isnt being worshipped or misused it should be fine. talents should be used to help islam and not shot down using the haram gun. that is my view, not that it matters much, pls do your own research too and stick wiht what you firmly believe in.

This comment might be a bit late by the time you are reading this but this is all I want to say. I used to adore watching anime (still do) and when I do watch it I start for some reason to start analysing the animation its self or the character themselves. After a while of watching, I'd begin to draw the character. This was especially when I watched Tokyo Ghoul, Hunter X Hunter (haven't finished) , Dragon Ball Z/GT/Super. I began to animate some fight scenes using a stick software called Stick Nodes then later moved to flipaclip. I loved creating my own fighting animations. However, I was told that drawing was haram. I've heard that drawing was haram so much times yet I ignored it. After a really long time, quite recently I searched if drawing was haram (By this time it was probably like 6 months the last time I animated but a day since I drew anything - Trunks from DBZ -) It said that it was in a way challenging Allah (SWT). Ustagfurallah if what I said was miss heard or said but I was actually shook. At that moment , I began to want to throw all my drawings away. Btw I didn't usually keep that much drawings and when I drew it was usually sketches. I just want to find the 100% truth. Im beginning to feel a little wierd. Is it haram to animate since it involves having to draw. If drawing animations are haram is it haram to animate sprite characters ( Those pixel characters u usually see in those rather old games). I'd like to get an answer because I want to animate stuff that can be inspiration to other muslims like for e.g Fighting against shaytan and the super power is iman. its proper fights , at least I hope
