Is what Hermes and now Chanel doing unethical (requiring pre-spends?)? Yes, yes I think it is (THAT is the point for debate). Now, is it illegal (not all that is unethical is illegal and vice versa)? That's what the lawsuit will determine based on anti-trust laws (and idk if they do not encompass luxury goods, which is what some people are arguing). I do disagree with the "silly bag" situation---it is serious money, even if you can "afford it".

I agree with you. One wonders how equitable the process is since it isn't transparent. What if a manager (who holds the power over QB distribution) has a prejudice? An opaque, undefined process can be a breeding ground for inequity. I will be following this lawsuit closely and am interested to see if Hermes will create more transparent selling practices in the US...who knows?

Hermes hand makes a limited supply of handbags annually and they control their quality by ensuring each piece is made to the highest level of craftsmanship. The artisans have extensive training and are allowed the time needed to hand craft each piece. This is not a mass production model of business. The stores order a limited number of bags(they are also given a quota) into their store each year. Given these limitations, the SA's want to reward true collectors (not resellers) of the brand across all of the categories with their limited supply. Is it infuriating when you can't buy a bag you want? Yes! Is a lawsuit going to change that? Unlikely.

Ok here we go , I am really tired of wealthy people complaining about Hermes and it's pre spend or Chanel's price increases . I find it very hypocritical because they complain but tomorrow they are in the store sucking up to the SA's and they buy a new bag or at least try to .

I think luxury is to make someone feel special. So the people who are suing felt that they paid but were not made to feel special. I guess that’s why they felt unhappy. Maybe the suing part is for them to be made famous and therefore feel special. Haha….
