Originating in the Mukurthi peak, Pykara River and the waterfalls the river produces is one of the most beautiful and majestic sights that you will get to see in Ooty. Located 20 kms away from Ooty in the Ooty-Mysore road, the Pykara lake has been developed into a thoroughly enjoyable picnic spot by the addition of a boat house and restaurant.
The dam and power house built across the river also ensures hydro electricity to the population. Declared as a heritage site, the Pykara lake is one of those must see sights in Ooty. As the river flows down the mountains it forms two majestic waterfalls, the first one fifty five meters in height and the second one even higher at sixty one meters. To bask in the summer sun by the side of the lake or go boating in the lake are the favorite pastimes of people who visit there.
The surroundings of the Pykara are famous for the Toda settlements and these are one of the very few placements where you find the Todas in their natural habitat. It is advisable to take some warm clothes with you even during summer as it can get pretty chilly during the evenings.
It is preferable to stay away from the lake and fall during the monsoon. Especially, the falls are very unpredictable during the monsoons as the level of water might rise suddenly without any forewarning and can result in catastrophe for any tourist caught unawares.

മുകുർത്തി കൊടുമുടിയിൽ നിന്ന് ഉത്ഭവിക്കുന്ന പൈക്കര നദിയും നദി ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടങ്ങളും ഊട്ടിയിൽ നിങ്ങൾക്ക് കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്ന ഏറ്റവും മനോഹരവും ഗംഭീരവുമായ കാഴ്ചകളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. ഊട്ടി-മൈസൂർ പാതയിൽ ഊട്ടിയിൽ നിന്ന് 20 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന പൈക്കര തടാകം ഒരു ബോട്ട് ഹൗസും റെസ്റ്റോറന്റും ചേർത്ത് തികച്ചും ആസ്വാദ്യകരമായ ഒരു പിക്നിക് സ്ഥലമായി വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.
നദിക്ക് കുറുകെ നിർമ്മിച്ച അണക്കെട്ടും പവർ ഹൗസും ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ജലവൈദ്യുതി ഉറപ്പാക്കുന്നു. പൈകര തടാകം ഒരു പൈതൃക സ്ഥലമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടതിനാൽ ഊട്ടിയിലെ കാണേണ്ട കാഴ്ചകളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. നദി മലനിരകളിലൂടെ ഒഴുകുമ്പോൾ അത് രണ്ട് ഗംഭീര വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടങ്ങളായി മാറുന്നു, ആദ്യത്തേത് അമ്പത്തിയഞ്ച് മീറ്റർ ഉയരവും രണ്ടാമത്തേത് അറുപത്തിയൊന്ന് മീറ്ററും ഉയരത്തിൽ. തടാകത്തിന്റെ അരികിൽ വേനൽ വെയിലിൽ കുളിക്കുകയോ തടാകത്തിൽ ബോട്ടിംഗ് നടത്തുകയോ ആണ് അവിടെ സന്ദർശിക്കുന്നവരുടെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട വിനോദം.
