I reached out to Pomegranate and asked them whether they have stopped using resealable bags. You can read their reply below.
“We had to stop using the resealable bags when our printer upgraded some other equipment and the new equipment doesn't retrofit with the resealable bag machine. There's probably inventory that we're still shipping with resealable bags or there may be inventory out there on the shelf with the previous bags, but all new puzzles have a non-resealable bag..”

Sorry about the very long video, it's the first time I have made one that's over an hour long 😆. I hope you don't mind watching such a long video, I know my computer did not like to edit it 😉. Do you have any experience with Pomegranate puzzles? Or have you tried a brand where the quality is different depending on the piece count?

I’m still a novice puzzler - I solved my first 1000 puzzle a few months ago and I’m. Ow doing my 6th adult puzzle. I was pretty obsessive about doing the sort for edge pieces and building the frame. But now I also have a sort of hybrid method. I do sort for edges in my general sort but then unless I see something obvious a start the colours first. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on puzzling. It’s helping me a lot. Evelyn in Montreal

Of these three puzzles, I like Pomegranate's "A Resounding Success" (kitties) the best. The whimsical nature of the image is what appeals to me. I find it interesting and unusual that there is a quality difference between the different piece-size puzzles. Yes, this video was rather long. I watched part of it and then came back to the rest of it later. The thoroughness of your review of these puzzles is outstanding. Thank you.

I actually like the larger sized 300 piece. As I am now older between eye fatigue & days when arthritis kicks in the fingers, manipulating small pieces becomes annoying. Trying to find larger piece puzzles can be hard to find because many that are larger have like a 35 count or less. I will put this on my list of puzzles to do. I also liked the 1000 piece due to the blocking. Thank you for your reviews. Please share more large piece puzzles when you come across them.

I love Pomegranate brand but i have noticed that in the smaller count puzzles of theirs, that there are some false fits with borders, but not in their 1000 piece ones, at least in the ones I have done. I also love Charley Harper's art, but absolutely ADORE Robert Bissell's bears. I have also found with the smaller count ones that the pieces can be hell to undo, they almost fit too well, lol

Yes, I also had some false fits in the edge of the 500 piece puzzle, but not a single one in the solid colored 1000 piece edge, so there is definitely a difference in quality there (that I completely forgot to mention in my final thoughts 😆).

Hi Nana. This was an excellent review. I couldn't help noticing how similar your techniques and preferences are to mine from the way you sort the pieces to how you build the puzzles. We must have gone to the same puzzling school. 😄 I currently have two Pomegranate puzzles, a 1000 and a 300 pieces. The 300-piece puzzle did not come with a resealable bag. The 1000-piece puzzle came with one but it was missing a piece so I asked for a replacement and the store I bought it from sent me another bag that was not resealable. I'm not sure if it means that they are going away from resealable bags or not. I also checked the size of the piece on the back of the box for the 300-piece puzzle and it matched the actual piece size so it looks like they have corrected that error since. I really like the way you edit your build sequences. They are so much more interesting that a straight up overhead timelapse. Of the three puzzles you built, the 1000-piece one was be my favorite. I totally agree when you say that a nice image does not make a fun puzzle but sometimes, I can't help myself and buy a puzzle that I know will be difficult just because I love the image so much. Cheers! 🙂

Thank you for the lovely comment 🥰. I did ask Pomegranate about the whole resealable bag/ single use bag issue. You can read their reply in the description of this video, but basically they upgraded some equipment and the new didn't work with the resealable bag machine, so their puzzles doesn't come with resealable bags anymore 😔. But it's nice to know that the mistake with the actual piece size graphic is fixed 👍. Sometimes (and I mean only sometimes 😉) it's worth doing a difficult puzzle that you don't really enjoy, just to see the beautiful result 😁

I prefer the third puzzle. That would had been perfect as a 500 pcs. As far as Pomegranate as a brand, I have done two 1000 pcs; I like the matte finish and have no complaints about quality.

Yes, it would definitely also be fun as 500 pieces 😁. That's the down side with low piece count puzzles, that you sometimes spend to little time with a lovely image... But I guess I just have to do it again then 😉 (and sorry for the late reply 😆)

Hi, I have seven Charley Harper designed Pomegranate puzzles. All of mine are different designs from the puzzles you have :) I absolutely love Charley Harper's artwork. I did encounter quite a few false fits when putting together the edges and the solid color sections in the puzzles. When piecing together the edges first, I ended up using a tape measure to compare my puzzle edge length to the dimensions given on the puzzle box. I would keep working with the pieces until I got the edge size of my puzzle to match the size on the box. When piecing together 'The California Desert Mountains' puzzle and 'The Desert' puzzle, I added the outside edge last to eliminate some of false fit worries. I enjoyed your review. I didn’t realize that the sides of the box has the image in different orientations. Thank you, I enjoyed learning something new!

I want all the puzzles with his art 🤩. I only experienced false fits with the edge of the 500 piece puzzle 🤔. But starting with the edge is definitely not always the best thing. I find with a lot of brands, that if there are a tendency for false fits, then the edge will be where most of them are. (and sorry for the late reply 😆)

I live here in Portland Oregon where Pomegranate puzzles are made. You see them for sale everywhere. They are an okay brand. It's funny, while I am watching your video, I am in fact repairing pieces from a Ravensburger Puzzle I am doing. It's a 9000-piece puzzle and so far, I have had to repair over 200 pieces. The cardboard Ravensburger uses is just awful not to mention the enormous amount puzzle dust in their puzzles. This has been my experience with Ravensburger over the past few years. It's a rare image on a Ravensburger that interests me to do but there have been some and I have received a few as gifts and they have all been the same poor quality with many, many damaged pieces in each one. This has not been my experience with Clementoni, Educa, Anatolian and Castorland. Those puzzles have all been of excellent quality.

Sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience with Ravensburger puzzles. I have quite a few of their puzzles myself and I estimate that their usual ratio of damaged pieces is about 0.5% or 5 in a 1000. I just started a 5000 piece puzzle and found 24 damaged pieces in total so finding 200 damaged pieces in a 9000 piece puzzle is out of the norm for them. It could be that they were having problems with their manufacturing equipment that day. They use a softer cardboard that allows bent pieces to be straightened up and that may explain some of the damage. The dust can also be annoying but I found that keeping the bag in the box and pulling a handful for pieces at a time gets rid of 90% of it. Some people also use a colander but it doesn't bother me that much. Despite all that, I still consider them a high quality brand. Their image quality, piece cut variability and colour accuracy is top notch. The glare is minimal and I personally don't like when the fit is too tight making the puzzle hard to disassemble. If I may ask, which 9000 piece puzzle are you working on?

@@fellowpuzzler I am working on the Magical Dragon Forest. I submitted my issues to Ravensburger US and they told me that this puzzle has been discontinued and there was nothing they could do to help me. Didn't even offer another choice for a replacement. How's that for service? I submitted to Ravensburger Germany and a month later haven't heard a word. I did the 13,200 Clementoni Band of Thunder and didn't have a single damaged piece. How is that for a percentage? In the many Clementoni puzzles I have done I have never had a damaged piece. The Band of Thunder was missing a piece. I contacted Clementoni and within two weeks I had a replacement on my doorstep of the puzzle. How is that for service compared to Ravensburger? Never had to repair a Castorland piece or an Educa or Pomegranate. I have done many Anatolian puzzles and recall fixing a piece one time. My experience tells me that buying a Ravensburger is always a big risk. The number of damaged pieces is unacceptable to me.

I don't have many Ravensburger puzzles either, but that is mostly because I don't like their boxes 😆. Puzzle dust doesn't really bother me, but Ravensburger does for sure have a lot of it, so I understand how that can turn some people away from the brand. When it comes to the quality of the pieces I have never had a problem and actually really like them... But I have also only had bad experiences with Gibsons puzzles, and most people seem to love those 🤷. I am really fascinated with how we can have so different experiences with brands. And it's not like it's a preference thing. We can all prefer different qualities, but when some people, with the same brand, never experience damaged pieces, and some experience them all the time, it sure is weird 🤔. I have to agree with you on Ravensburgers customer service. I had a 99 piece puzzle that was missing 66 pieces. First of all it was quite difficult to figure out where I should write to. There was no clear "if you have quality issues write to customer service here". But I got hold of them, and while they were very kind, it took them about a week to reply EACH TIME, so even though it wasn't a very long conversation it took a VERY long time to finish. They didn't have the puzzle any longer, but said they would send another from the same series instead... That's several months ago and I still haven't received it, so perhaps it's time to write to them again 😆. (and sorry for the late reply 😆)

@@a_puzzling_lamb I just received my first order of 2024 Ravensburger puzzles today and I am glad to see that they reduced the size of their boxes. A 1000 piece box is now 3.5cm by 1.5cm smaller and they finally moved the blue piece outside the frame of the image. They also got rid of the shrink wrap and replaced it with stickers that are easy to remove. It looks like they finally listened to us 😄.

As I showed I did have some false fits in the edge of the 500 piece puzzle (and then I never mentioned it again, honestly I forgot all about it 😆), but I had no other issues with the other puzzles. Perhaps if you tried another piece count you would like it more... But sometimes you just don't like a brand and that's fine 🤷.
