I totally know where you're coming from! The creative mind is never satisfied, I'd be worried if you were :)
OMG! Your portfolio looks amazing! I hope whoever gets to see this, will be impressed! I'm a big fan of children's books, especially the picture books. Some of my most favourite illustrators are Marcus Pfister and Inge & Dieter Schubert. I really love their soft watercolour illustrations. Your illustrations really make me think of them! Good luck with finding a publisher. Your illustrations deserve to being published! 💖💖💖

mebearcreations thank you so much! I don't know those illustrators, I'll have to look into them! My favorites are Quentin Blake (of course) and Oliver Jeffers... and many many more. :)
I love seeing artists flipping through their work and talking about the different pieces, that portfolio is stunning!

This is LOVELY!
So many worthy ideas, thank you for your work and simple layouts, perfect tutorials for anyone!

Thank you so much for sharing. I'm actually just getting back to my job search, and my Camden case just isn't cutting it anymore. I've had this notion that everything has to be on black matte board, but this really challenged that. Much more organized and versatile than just shoving free-floating mat boards in a case. Killer presentation, btw. Thanks again!
What a wonderful portfolio! I wish you huge success with your beautiful illustrations.
Love your work!

That's beautiful!!
What is it like having a portfolio review? How do you prepare for it? This is so very inspiring! Thanks for sharing !
@studioxjess
7 жыл бұрын
Liz Z It kind of depends on who is reviewing your work. I think it's important to get feedback from as many people as possible! When you are ready for it. It's always very subjective so, one person's tastes might not match another person's. But, if you get different critiques you can look out for the common themes. If everyone loves one piece and doesn't like another, that's probably "truth" but if there's an art director who just doesn't like penguins, you can ignore that. I think you prepare by making work from the soul and developing a voice that's authentic... then when you put it out there divorce your emotions from it, and try to appreciate any tough critiques as opportunities to get better. 👌
Naw, this is all so beautifully illustrated and you have created really captivating character concepts. I'm sure that you're success will only grow x

I love your artwork Jess! I also use the screw post bind method, and I love it! You can switch out the images whenever you have new ones. I also love that your images are grouped by character theme, genius idea! I too feel like every year I get a little better but am still chasing the ideal of what I would like my art to be. I guess we all do that. but your work is so polished and charming for only having been at it for a year!

Pamela Goodman what a lovely compliment, thanks Pamela! I am happy I chose the screw post method, definitely the most versatile I think :) Regarding the work - it's pretty much taken me 34 years of painting to get this point - ok, maybe 30, as I probably didn't come out of the womb paintbrush in hand ☺️ I have been focusing on my children's illustration for a year, that's true, but it's definitely been a slow build with a LOT of plateaus, in fact in on one right now. I'd love to see your work too! where's the best spot to check it out?
Fantastic Portfolio!

Beautiful illustrations, Love the animal characters you make. I work in a school and honestly there isn't enough traditional/watercolour art illustrations in them, children love them and you tend to get very graphic/digital type artwork in the large majority of books. I wish you luck, your work really stands out.

I loved the Leia at the end - really nice! :) Your work is amazing! I don't study this kind of Illustration but this was great. The chapter idea was really cool and something I might test in my own portfolio, I'll be studying games design next year but I always struggle with making my portfolio flow nicely. :P For each character in my portfolio I usually show: - Page full thumbnails and doodles. - Larger version of one character thumbnail (rough sketch) on a page with notes and a couple of reference images. - 1 or 2 Pages of different heads/hair, clothing, weapon ideas. - Combine some of those small ideas into three final character ideas that resemble the original silhouette. - Final fully detailed drawing of the character. I usually use 5 pages just for one character, I really like showing how my ideas developed instead of keeping it all in my head.

Jay Wood hey Jay, thank you! Yes I really like the idea of showing the whole thought process behind design, I'm a total nerd for that kind of stuff. Interesting no one did that in their children's illustration portfolios for this conference... but I also wouldn't really be able to because most of these are just straight up watercolor on paper! (Which is the beauty in having a pretty loose style, you can be super lazy ;) I really love the work of character designers though it seems like it takes so much patience and precision!
@AgentDigits
7 жыл бұрын
Studio Jess Yeah I love character design - I watched various film/game documentaries and got obsessed with it! I love seeing how different my favourite characters in a franchise could have looked, it's also super cool to see how various designs are reused for other characters. I'm jealous that you can be a little lazy haha! Yeah, drawing a ton characters can be pretty time consuming, I think the end result is always worth it though!! I only really draw a detailed, realistic character for my final design - otherwise I'd be there all day :P I find it difficult to make my portfolio stand out - one of my teachers came up with the idea of making a storyboard showcasing how my characters could interact with other characters or fight - "it all depends on what you make the character for" he told me. I think adding a little story at the end of each characters section in my portfolio could be a cool idea!! Anyways, your work is super cute! Thanks for replying :)
This is soooo awesome... did you catch any fish with this one? Your work is amazing!
nice job
Do you have to "retouch" your illustrations on Photoshop after scanning them? Great work btw! :)

Jess Louise thanks Jess! That's exactly what I do - everything is by hand (usually watercolor) and then I scan it all in and clean things up a bit :)
Where did you learn how to draw like this? Ugh... I was dreaming of getting into a school like that to learn all this amazing stuff but now I see you have to know how to do all this... before getting in?!
Hi Jess, thank you for your Channel, I have finally got around to get a new email and subscribe, Your channel is the first one i ever got hooked on . Thank you again. :)

Lindsey Ewinger I use an Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner... it is great, I just use the standard settings and scan everything as a tif at 800 dpi ~ I could probably get more technical, maybe one day :D

I have a big binder with sheet protectors full of amazing drawings.oh and I'm drawing flags with countries im start labeling cities,I did like 56 flags. There are 261 flags I have a long way to go.when I finished drawing all flags.i will draw the flags of the 13 colonies in order and the Soviet union,European flag,confederate flag,the Nazis,States with flags.thats alot of Talent that's why people say to me you are very talented,😊
All of my art is done on an iPad Pro, so would I even need to have them printed to be put into a portfolio? Or just take along my iPad?
do you use reference to create your illustrations or do it all from memory?
this is so cute
I'd read the story about the TRex lol reminds me of Lyle Lyle Crocodile
the screws are called Chicago screws
💙
Hi, silly question... did you put two pieces of paper on each protector sheet? or you printed your illustrations on front and back of 1 sheet?
Hii love your work! I was just wondering, it seems you have drawn them traditionally with watercolour, how did you manage to scan them? When I scan my traditional works onto my computer, the quality and colour always go down, and that meant printing was more of a disaster and the final outcome never turned out very great. Please let me know if you have any special scanning advice:'D Ahaha thank you

iAmAlmostInvisible hello! Yes I do everything with watercolor and then scan - it's taken a while to figure out the technique that works for me - but a lot of people are asking about it so I'm going to a video on that process soon! 🤓 (it's a lot easier to show than tell I think)

where did you buy the folder?

@studioxjess

pnut bro Well I really like my Canon Pixma, BUT - it doesn't produce true "giclee" art prints (which is the standard for art prints on Etsy, etc) so if you want to print stuff to sell you might want a more expensive model. And I use an Epson Photo Perfect scanner which I loooooove. Hope that helps!
