Depending on the windage of the barge vs the tug, Tim might have been taking advantage of the 30k wind to help spin the stack (NASA term, but meaning the barge+tug) around.
For land lovers from the middle of the country, what you're doing is quite awe inspiring. It makes one realize the intelligence of ancient ship captains, like Captain Cook, who explored the unknown oceans/shores of the world.

Chiquita -n- Dole on one side & Cherry Hill Landfill on the other..... Hmmm, depending on which way the wind blows out there you could smell either fresh or rotten fruit?? I hear you speak about letting power off so you can add power if you get into a situation where you need to turn. Jet Skiers(and others) ought to think about this & you know all about it but seeing a jet ski blasting full speed if all good fun but if they need to turn & no more power is available they've got nothing to push so that they can turn. Alright Captain, you got my mind thinking physics or something above my pay-grade. ty Sir & be safe.

Tim: 1. ?? What about the White Wheel-like things that are above the wheelhouse sealing are they some kind of valves, opener, and closer, or what device do they operate on the tugs they seem to all have them. In the future, would you ever buy a tugboat as your permanent home to live in with your family? Sincerely! R.S.V.
@TimBatSea
Ай бұрын
Thank you for watching Richard. Those are the horizontal and vertical adjusters for the search lights. And as much as I love living and working on a tug, they really would make very bad and costly homes or private boats. They are purpose built to work. Over 1/2 their internal volume is fuel tankage and without fuel in the tanks, they are very unstable. They cost a lot to operate and need a crew. Just the maintenance alone would bankrupt me. (Our 5 year inspection on our tug probably cost more than a million dollars). CUOTO
Your Buoy system sounds a bit confusing? Wasn't that the purpose all those years ago? 😂 All the best, CUOTO

Dumb question & respectful of your experience counting for everything: Was turning around _behind_ the ATV an option? Probably nothing to you but that spin looked tight, and on camera it looked like you had a lot of room between the rear of the unit and bridge beyond. Maybe thats the rookie move. :-)

I had a little aid I would place on the window sill in front of the helm. One side said ‘red to the right’ with an arrow pointing right. The other side said ‘red to the left’ with an arrow pointing left. 👍 I would change it depending on what I was doing. It wasn’t there just to help whoever was on the wheel but to remind ME what the heck I was doing. 😳😱😂 (See my helmsman saying “was that 10 degrees towards the rocks or away?”)

@jamesmurney1374
Ай бұрын
ATB, Articulated Tug Barge. Kind of like Tim's rig but the tug uses giant pins to attach to the barge. The pins come out the sides of the tug, roughly under the wheelhouse, that engage the barge in the notch. They cause the tug to roll with the barge, but not pitch, so it articulates. It's a very odd motion to experience. The system allows the tug and barge to be much larger. The barges are the size of a small ship but since they are moved my a tug the crew requirements are less.
