Putting the Agri Fab Disc to Work!

Hey everyone! In this episode we use the Agri Fab Disc Cultivator to work up the front field so we can get a cover crop planted. We would much prefer not having to disc, however, the ground is packed down and quite hard from all of the heavy equipment we have had on it while clearing and leveling. Initially you have to bust the soil up or the seed just won't take. Thanks for watching!

    I was thinking the same thing. Its great to see close relationships these days that are true and built on love like GOD intended and not materialism, or byilt up hype. The love of JESUS will show through people, if people will just allow HIM to take control.

    Before using the discs you should use the box blade with the rippers all the way down and tilted forward so you are not filling the box. The box blade will do the heavy work breaking up the packed soil, and then use the discs to break up the clods.

    Hey Dan. I agree that is a good way to do things. However we were afraid of rain that was coming and that area is a slight sloping hill. We decided to just disc the area so not to disturb to much top soil in hopes it would not wash away in all the rain we have had lately. Good thing we did, we got a lot of rain and lots of the seed and top soil are now in our ditch, lol. Big bummer but not the end of the world. Amazingly the plants are doing well, just less of them than I would have liked to see. Looks like it will fill in nicely though. Thanks for commenting Dan, we really appreciate the feedback. It helps us learn. Lord knows we have plenty of that to do. We just take it one step at a time. Terry

    Forest ToFarm I'm up in VA and the rain has caused some havoc on the property. Our creek crested and flooded an area I've been clearing for the past year with our Kubota BX23S (love the grapple). Time to remove obstructions in the creek so it flows better, put in some drain tiles to dry the meadow we put in, and get to planting. The work never ends, but it is enjoyable.

    Sounds like you have enjoyed the experiences we are having, ha ha. We need a grapple. I agree the work never ends and we also enjoy the challenge. Glad to have you here and thanks for watching!! Terry

    Enjoy the videos guys! Invest in a 3 point disk harrow for the Kubota, and you can break the ground for seeding in about an hour. Used about $500.

    because you got such a small property, just use one of those hand crank seed spreaders, and pick things by hand.... sometimes it's faster to go simpler

  • @ForestToFarm

    @ForestToFarm

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yep, we already seeded with a spreader you push by hand. The video should be up later this week. For now this field is just going to be left growing. We will go in as seeds develop and collect them by hand for later seeding again. I agree simple is a good way to go. We did a cover crop mix to hopefully help build good soil health. We had seed from last fall so its really a winter mix but never had time to plant. It should all come up now but most of it will die this summer. Next fall we will do better I hope. Time is limited with all we are doing right now. Terry

    @@ForestToFarm - For what it's worth. Simplicity should be King. But you guys are neither being simple or effective! To seed a cover crop you just need the seeds and a hand to broadcast them! Can't be easier, simpler or cheaper. Particularly in a field that size. No tillage, no disks, no plows, no fuel, no tractor... Literally nothing else is needed! Think about it, no till is King! ;-)

    Dear Terry & Brian, On a serious note, might you not need a proper tilling implement that you could add to your Kubota? I know I heard you say that you wouldn't, but sometime in the future as clearly that land will need maintaining over time, especially if you intend to exploit it to some degree (vegetables & such). Would it not be a sound idea to offer that beaten old lawn mower as part payment for something decent which you could use time & again? At least you'd get shot of it & get some partial recompense. It was great fun seeing the pair of you having fun ( but tiring by the looks of it). Kind regards.

    Possibly. We want to go no till as much as possible. You basically just knock the vegetation down breaking the stalk and killing it so it then becomes mulch/weed suppressor. Then run a "no till drill" that cuts groves in the soil, drops seed in the groves and then pushes the dirt back over the seed. You can rent a no till drill for very cheap around here. As far as the mower goes I love beating that thing up, ha ha. It takes a real beating and keeps going. Our vegetables will mostly come from a Back To Eden/ permaculture type garden. It uses wood chips, mulch and manure to hold moisture and feed the plants. Lots of neat stuff coming! Terry

By the way do drop in on Jim; he might have a small job like roofing to be done soon. There is some redeeming feature though, I hear he'll be making the food himself with his talents. Kind regards.
