If you remember the Chernobil explosion, the radioactive effect reached as far as British Home Islands, whereas Poland is, essentially, within spitting distance from major Russian cities, meaning that the only thing he can do with those nukes is to launch them as far away from Russia as physically possible, and that gives his targets more than ample time to shoot those nukes down, and also retaliate with their own nuclear weaponry.

This is why today Hiroshima and Nagasaki are thriving cities while Cernobil remains a wasteland. The main dangers of nuclear war are the bombings of course and the possible nuclear winter in which widespread firestorms following nuclear explosions produce vast amounts of smoke and soot into the upper atmosphere blocking the sun light. No sun means no light, low temperature, no plants, no animals, less oxygen and depending on the scale of the war and the parties involved the nuclear winter can last from a few months to 15 years.

All of it's refineries are now being attacked. It's arms trade has also died a death as people see how poorly Russia armaments are doing - at one point an SU35 fighter was being shot down each day for 2 weeks running. Arms are now flowing into Ukraine so losses are going to increase for Russia. No-one in Europe will allow him to take territory from Ukraine. At the moment the West has insisted that the arms we use are not used on Russian soil. If Putin wants to escalate the war then these limits will be removed. Is Putin aware that France has it's own nuclear weapons?

Considering the internal structure in russias political and military system and how funds always get redirected for personal gains I have to say that the number of nuclear weapons russia has that can function are a fraction of the number of weapons they claim to have. I have no doubt that a fair portion of the funds to routinely maintain those weapons have been syphoned. Nuclear weapons will over long periods leach radiation in minute amounts into the wiring and electrical components and in effect render them as duds or as self destructive device.

9:54 No never. Piece by piece. After Ukraine, first Moldova. After Moldova, either just Estonia, or Estonia and Suwalki, getting to Kaliningrad. Latvia is closed in, Poland has Kaliningrad at one side and Belarus may join in, Poland will have it harder than anyone suspects. Lithuania and the other Baltics can never hold off Russia. Now NATO and EU will take at minimum 48 hours to get any troops in, 6-8 weeks for heavy equipment (about 2 weeks for EU). They now have to puch through the tiny strip at Poland which is fortified, good chance that line is (deep) in Poland. Assault from water is very costly. Baltics will have puppet governments installed that sign full integration into Russia or current heads of state are encouraged to to do so. This makes the taking of the Baltics a fait accompli, all done. This will just hinge on 1 getting to the sea in 36-48 hours and 2 getting governments (mostly) intact. He will gamble on NATO not taking this immense cost in human lives. Then Finland or Polajnd is up next. On and on.

I really think he would do it. The difference between Putin and his Soviet predecessors is that he has never seen mass destruction firsthand. The Great Patriotic War, as WW2 is called in Russia, was a truly horrific event to live through. Tens of millions died and the destruction was untold. So the Soviet leaders were always reluctant to use the nuclear arsenal at their disposal. Putin, on the other hand, has never been in the military nor has he witnessed any mas destruction like war. So he has no aversion to the use of his nuclear arsenal, thinking his country can survive it.

Pretty sure the big nukes lead to diminishing returns, afaik a 1 megaton nuke isnt going to do all that much more compared to say a 50 or 250 kiloton one, because its not going to be able to spread its energy out far enough, instead you just get more or less "dirty" area of effect.

article 5 does not mean they would have to launch their own nuclear ordinance or even actively respond at all. article 5 says they must respond in a manner they deem fit. this could just mean sending helmets to the attacked country. The EU mutual defence obligations are much more defined where the EU members states must come to each others aid directly. Article 5 is accepted to mean that other members would actively defend each other, but it doesnt actually state this and we shouldnt just assume this would be the outcome.
