Putin’s ‘mafia boss’ mentality could be his demise | Bill Browder

“If he ever loses that respect, then all of a sudden, that’s it. He’s finished.”
Vladimir Putin is “like a mafia boss” who craves respect, the very insecurity which could end in his demise, says Bill Browder.

    The Russian people want an assertive, take charge boss who gets things done. If he projects this image of power and succeeds in his ambitions then he'll be okay to the Russian people. What the Russian people won't tolerate is somebody who is a timid loser. They don't mind at all having a new Russian empire that encompasses large parts of Eastern and Northern Europe.

    That money in Western banks from the RF Central Bank needs to be given to Kyiv. Why should we be afraid of Putin? Is the West supposed to live in fear of that short guy as the Russian people shake in his presence? It's time for this ridiculous game to end!

  • @blechtic

    @blechtic

    2 ай бұрын

    It's not about being afraid. It's about law and consequences. There's a real question there of what is the legal basis of doing so and that law has to be based on some moral principles and rights. Then there's the question whether we are talking about the assets of Russia or some Russians. What would you consider to be good enough a reason and proof for some country (or even your own) to just take your wealth? We are talking about rights fundamental to our values. The consequences are that such an act would set a precedent that would be extended and exploited by bad actors making up excuses. You don't to make it too easy for them. Western democracies, companies, charities and people have money, assets, etc., all over the globe, sometimes for a bad reason, often for a some practical reason, and possibly for the pursuance of a good cause. All that would be in danger. It could do very serious harm globally, because in a global world even local effects travel. Confiscation of development aid, etc., could create refugee crises, which would then destabilise those areas and the areas surrounding them, create conflicts and show up on our doorsteps. Also, there would be an effect at home: Unless there is a very precisely limited and well-thought-out framework, it would decrease incoming investment, add perceived risk for investors and lower credit ratings, depress economy and drive up prices. Any doubt that the government could just take the money without a very good reason, would obviously seriously decrease confidence in the economy. In a larger geopolitical sense, we have basically Western currencies as reserve currencies and currencies of global trade. It underlines the status of Western democracies and our values and that our values are a strength that creates prosperity. There are many up-and-coming countries who would like to get that prestige and not have Western countries in the loop when they trade. Okay, that may be a fair ask, but they are often not very democratic and not interested in preserving international law or human rights in their pursuits. Propping up Chinas and Saudi-Arabias and Irans in that position, would seriously undermine the efforts to promote democracy and human rights and undermining international law would not be very good for anyone. And if the Western democracies can not seem to stand by their own ideals and rules, why would anyone else bother? The simple truth is that even if it is for a good and righteous cause, taking money from a bad guy is still stealing, unless there's good moral and legal basis for it. I haven't seen anyone propose such basis yet, certainly not something that would not come with possible huge unintended consequences. I'm not saying one does not exist, I'm just saying that you want it airtight and not mess with our current property law principles, etc., and that it's probably not easy to come up quickly with something like that.

    I believe that Europe should seriously consider backing Ukraine in every way, even by providing troops. It's crucial to swiftly bring this prolonged conflict to a close to avert a catastrophic outcome. It's a senseless and destructive war instigated by a leader who lacks competence and understands that his authority will crumble once the reality dawns on the Russian people. Sadly, this conflict has resulted in significant loss of life, with nearly half a million soldiers killed or injured. The dictator continues to enlist underprivileged, uneducated young men from Siberia to fight a war in which they have no say.

    Sanctions take time, even when perfectly executed. It would be like if your neighbor got you fired, then looked out his window a week later and saw that you weren't homeless yet, and started shouting that it had no effect. They saved $600B to start their war, specifically to resist sanctions. Time under sanctions is what matters.
