Putin’s economy ‘dwarfed’ as Russia now ‘entirely dependent’ on China | Superpowers

"They are utterly dependent at the moment, both politically and militarily."
Russia is now an "economic dwarf," says Michael Binyon, former Moscow correspondent for The Times.
He's joined by host James Heappey and military intelligence expert Philip Ingram on Superpowers.

This conversation seems to have been recorded in 2017. The world now knows that Chinas economy is at best half of what economists thought it was, their real estate sector is in collapse, investors have fled, Western experts have fled, BRI is an albatross economically and politically, their population is aging at an unprecedented rate, and youth unemployment is through the roof. Meanwhile, the idea that Ukraine can’t beat Russia is laughable, as if America’s experience with Vietnam and Russia’s similar defeat in Afghanistan never happened. Ukraine is more advanced technologically and better equipped militarily than either of those nations. It’s 2024, gents - get with the times.

Russia has vast quantities of food, gas, and natural resources, all of which China (and everyone else) desperately needs. Russia’s immediate problem is that it was caught unprepared for the present war, because Putin (rather foolishly) trusted the west. He was confident that he could negotiate with the west not to move NATO eastward into Ukraine where it’s missiles would pose an existential threat to the Russian Federation.

  • @mikelee2213

NATO is a purely defensive alliance, and Putin knows it, but he would rather portray NATO as otherwise as part of his brainwashing propaganda to his uneducated masses. As for the natural resources that you mention, sure everybody wants them, but a lot of nations have learned to source it elsewhere other than Russia. For example, Europe has found much more secure sources of natural gas from Norway, USA and Qatar for example. In fact, Putin is now begging Xi to have Power of Siberia 2 natural gas pipeline built. Karma!

International Monetary Fund this month raised its 2024 forecast for Russia's GDP growth to 3.2% from the 2.6% projected in January 2024, equivalent to US$6-8 trillion and that Russian GDP figures are usually _under reported_ Sourced from IMF data (as of June 14, 2024), this puts Russia above Japan, UK, France, Italy, Brazil and Canada. Economists also say that even oil prices as low as $US60 a barrel still allow Russia to retain a fiscal safety net to support military conflict in the Ukraine that would last for years. Oh. 🤭

This is complete nonsense. Russia's economy is nowhere near $6trn. $3trn would be a biiig push. $6trn is just alternate reality propaganda. In fact. I just checked the IMF website, it shows Russia's GDP as $2.06 trn... That' smaller than Canada. That's smaller than Italy..... With the largest landmass on earth and a population 4 and 3 times larger respectively. That is NOT a sign of success. That is a clear indication of complete FAILURE as a country. Even more so, Russia cannot even defeat a country with 1/10th of the economy, 3% of the land mass and 1/5 of the population.... Russia is a joke.

The Communist China government shouldn't assume that wealthy countries would go back to buying a lot of products from China after five years of sanctions following a Chinese invasion into Taiwan. Europe is never going back to buying significant amounts of Russian natural gas and likely in general the Russian natural gas export industry is never going to recover fully because Russia is struggling trying to build infrastructure to export natural gas other places and because Qatar and the United States plan immense increases in their exports of natural gas so the world won't likely need much Russian natural gas in future. If wealthy democracies greatly reduce their demand for Chinese products due to sanctions and switch to importing those products from other countries zfter a Chinese invasion into Taiwan they won't go back to buying those products from China after five years. As well countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, India and even Russia know that China desires to take some of their territory as well so they as well as wealthy democracies might respond very negatively to a Chinese invasion into Taiwan.

It's entire economy is on a war footing; it has committed hundreds of thousands of soldiers, vast amounts of weapons and resources, to attack a neighbouring country with 10% of its GDP, 1/5 of its population and 3% of its landmass and yet its completely failing. The West hasn't even started treating Russia like a serious threat.... it views and treats Russia in the same way a blue whale views and treats a sealion.
