Putin runs out of allies as new FSB generation could turn on him | Mark Galeotti

“These are people who don't have those kind of primal gut senses of loyalty to Putin.”
Putin could face a crisis of loyalty as he brings in new FSB directors with fewer ties to his inner circle, says Russia analyst Mark Galeotti.

From a Canadian living in PL since 2008: Back in 2022, at the start of the full scale ru invasion, many of my friends in North America were telling me: "Ohhh you will see! The ru youth and population will revolt in the streets". And I was always replying the same: No they won't. Why? Because 12-years in PL certainly taught me a few things about the ru mentality, directly from Polish people, from University Teachers to (mostly) uneducated grandmas and "Older Boomers". Most who have had first-hand experiences. They all told me the same: "You must understand that ru is a country which has never experienced Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Thought! And since (circa) 2006, this is a society which has had a "Mad Max style" level of propaganda gradually integrated in their Education system." So if there are changes in ru, it will come from some unhappy faction at the very top. Not from the ru society.

Agree and If you had lived through the 90's as a Russian citizen I suspect you would have rejoiced at the prospect of someone finally getting things back on track. Putin brought stability after years of economic depression, hyperinflation, failed coups etc ie a social contract was implemented. So now that contract is under threat if not already somewhat eroded with the Ruble dysfunctional, crypto mobilisation, inflation at 8.5%, retreat of foreign capital and a highly sanctioned economy. In the west no matter the situation there is always hope and agency because you can protest and vote. As a Russian Citizen (RC) if not Putin then what ?? there is no alternative in sight just a yawning void of potentially horrible chaos and uncertantity. In summary for the average RC its a case of clinging to Putin in the hope that he can pull the Rabbit out of the hat because there simply is no Plan B. Understand this is not a defense of Putin just trying to paint the picture of the populations choices.

@@number1genoa you see... A 60+ years old grandmother would read your comment here in PL and say: "Are you done babysitting and nurturing and protecting the ru population? We in Eastern and Central Europe (and ru) all started pretty much at the same point back circa 1980. The difference is this: We in PL understood what was Freedom of Speech. We had it before. We (that grandmother back then a teen) in PL KNEW what it was to be in a bar on a Friday night when living close to a ru military base filled with ru soldiers. Me? I listened to so many stories from my in-laws and neighbors that no mater how you try to "spin it", ain't gonna stick. ru chose its path. No one else.

Times Radio must have posted a hundred videos in the past year predicting the imminent demise of Putin's leadership. All you have to do is read a tagline such as 'Putin's Generals are Running Out of Patience' or 'Russia's Economy is Tanking' to know it must be another Times Radio forecast. As much as anyone else, I'd love to see Putin gone, but these endless dramatic predictions are getting on my nerves.

It's very sad how Russia has been reduced to having no genuine friends. In an ideal world Canada could have been a good friend to Russia when you consider how similar we are in terms of geography, climate and natural resources. So many areas could have been places for close co-operation (including sports - like hockey!) Because of one man - Putin - Russia is now a pariah in Canada and likely will be for decades to come - tragic, but that is the reality.

I mean you can replace Putin but you still need to somehow back-paddle out of the war without losing your head. Get rid of Putin and pull out of the war and someone else may say "Thank you for getting the hot potato out of the fire for me, here is a bullet so I can rule now you are so unpopular." The appearance that Putin’s hold on power is “very very solid” is what it is, appearance. Putin’s hold on power is just inertial for lack of a substitute to be able to gather the dissatisfaction and anxieties about Putin’s chain of misjudgments and mistakes. Anyone high up in the FSB, politics and Army see the terrible mistakes Putin has committed and how poor were his judgments and sense of timing and opportunity. It is clear Putin’s shelf life has expired. Those guys know Putin’s judgments can no longer be taken for granted and trusted. The problem is how to articulate his elimination without being caught beforehand, and how to act fast and control the chaos that will ensue. The Army could do that; the FSB/KGB probably not, because they will risk their own existence. Something unexpected will happen, and chaos will prevail for a while, until all Putin’s cronies are removed.

It seems that if the ruble currency becomes irrelevant then some of the smaller states must band together to have a viable economy. The FSB needs money to operate and decentralization from the Kremlin might become more obvious.

Unfortunately, I feel we are stuck with this kind of behavior in the power structure of Russia until that generation has died off. That is, the generation that is old enough to have been born, raised and indoctrinated in the USSR. The fact of the matter is that generation of powerful individuals really want to return to the Soviet era if possible. Of course that period was horrible for your typical Russian, but not for those within the power structure itself (especially the KGB). I do not think the younger generations can ever be indoctrinated to the extent the older generation was by having actually lived and succeeded within the USSR, so I think once Putin and his generation are gone we will see a very different (and almost certainly) better Russia.

Let me be very clear: I would like nothing more than for Russia to pull out of Ukraine, including Crimea, Donetsk, amd Luhansk, and to end the war with reparation payments included. That being said, the experts have first predicted the Ukraine would fall in three days, and then that Russia would collapse/revolt/reform/mutiny/fail. Neither of those things happened, including when the late Mr. Prighozin led an armed military into Russia. So, while we can all hope that these changes in policy come to fruition, you'll please excuse me if I don't believe the headlines that Russia is on the brink. They've got a long way to go before any sort of change or radical reversal of policy happens, unfortunately.
