'Putin is trolling the entire world' with Navalny's death: Bill Browder | DW News

Bill Browder, the American-born British co-founder of Hermitage Capital Management and an adamant critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, spoke to DW at the Munich Security Conference (MSC) regarding the death of Alexei Navalny.
The death of the Russian opposition leader has been confirmed by Navalny's allies, but they say the Russian government is refusing to hand over his body.
Browder noted that Russian officials are no longer welcome at the MSC and said that Navalny's death is a "way for Putin to effectively troll the entire world."

My daughter's primary school is falling apart, there are leaks on the roof, no money for sports or activities, no field trips. Our family is dealing with inflation, my wife lost her job. But the thing is they don't need to explain anything, they don't need any excuses and they know it. They can do whatever they want. They'll probably be trolling his family - just because they can. Also, Navalny's funerals could become a problem (people, media attention etc) and now many our journalists (real journalists, not TV's talking heads) say that there is a chance that authorities won't return his body at all (e.g. they might cremate him "by mistake"). @Wess "Voting" in a place like Russia is just giving the people an opportunity to make a vow of loyalty to the authoritarian thug in charge. Only if there is freedom and a fair election is anyone actually voting. Despots sometimes co-opt the word "vote" to try to put on the appearance that their government is valid and their people willingly support them. As to your statement of "One might as well watch a different cartoon"...it seems you don't understand what it must be like to live in a totalitarian state. If there is no freedom you have no opportunity to change the channel and watch a "different cartoon", you simply get one channel that is whatever the state decides.

You could frame this act of murder in this way, but you could also interpret it as a sign of weakness. Putin might be in our head but it depends on the role we give him there. I don´t see strength in this act and I would not interpret it this way. The message he wants to send is clear, but it depends on if we fall for it or not.

But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." -- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

Yes it goes without saying if his death were innocent the authorities would want outside independent expert witnesses and the family to witness the good condition of the body immediately to document that fact and there's no reason to withhold the body, they could take xrays, scans, photographs, samples, etc, and release it. And obviously in democratic countries where people have constitutional rights the body would be released to the next of kin for them to make whatever arrangements they want for autopsy, funeral, etc. Not releasing the body is proof in itself of guilt, no need to wait for more "results" from tests etc, they're meaningless obviously. Not releasing the body is a statement by the regime and pure trolling as Browder says. They do it for attention and distraction.
