This was exactly what I needed! Well explained, three examples, and clear camera alignment so I could see how to do the underarm cast on. I was so intimidated when I saw it in the knitting instructions. Suzanne made it look totally approachable and within my ability.

Oh I think I like knitting the stitches better than the backwards loops I’m gonna try this as I just tried my first knit sweater and the loops when I divided for the sleeves just didn’t look right. I’m definitely trying what you showed! This was so helpful thank you!
@SuzanneBryan
6 ай бұрын
You can do it!
Thanks
I use satin rat tail to hold my stitches. You can get it down to 1mm in diameter. It’s really slippery and has a little structure so it stays round like a soft needle so it’s easier to pick up stitches later and since it isn’t woven no splitting waste yarn when you pick the stitches back up. Going to have to try the knitted on cast on with my Norwegian mitten thumbs, backwards loop is always such a mess. Thanks for showing that!

From watching this I realised that you can do the same knitted cast on but just purl instead. Just swatched it. Always learning with knitting. No need to twist the stitch as one does with the knitted cast on, just pop the new stitch on the needle.

Another great tutorial, thank you Suzanne. QUESTION. How would you cast on the sleeve stitches when working a round with two colours? Would you cast on all the stitches using just the main colour, or would you try to cast on in pattern? The row is actually 1 stiich grey, and 1 stitch cream alternating. Many thanks Michelle UK
Just what I needed for a baby hoodie, thank you!

Any time!
Love your videos - so clear and easy to understand. My pattern gives the option of casting on for the underarm or doing a provisional cast on at the underarm. Does it make any difference? I imagine there will still be the gaps to close up on either side afterward. By the way, your video on that is one of my favorites! Thanks for all your help.
@SuzanneBryan
3 жыл бұрын
It does not make a difference. 🧶
Thank you for showing this in continental. I learned two co methods by watching this: underarm knitted co and knitted co to start a work. I have a question though. Can you use a knitted cast on as your beginning cast on for knitting in the round and if so, how do you join the cast on. If you have a video, can you point me to it? Thank you so much.
Suzanne, first of all, thank you for your awesome videos. My question is, on a top down sweater do you prefer a knitted cast on in the middle of the row for the underarms vs. a cable cast on and why? The pattern calls for a cable cast on. Thank you.
@SuzanneBryan
3 жыл бұрын
I like the knitted more than the cable. Good question. The knitted has good structure, but also has some stretch to it. The cable cast on is just too tight.
Hi Suzanne - I'm a little confused as to how to figure out how many underarm stitches to cast on. Is there a formula or a standard number for the underarm?
@SuzanneBryan
4 жыл бұрын
What a great question. Yes, Elizabeth Zimmermann suggests using 8% of the total chest circumference for the underarm. Many designers use 2 inches (5cm) for an average adult sweater. Thank you for asking.
You know, I never thought about turning the work and doing a knit cast on... thanks for this. Not a big fan of the backwards loop, I find it too loose.
Think this is going to help me carry on with my Jumper in Art of Knitted Lace. Added you on Rav. :0
