Invisible Bind Offs for K1P1 Ribbing, Italian BO vs Tubular BO
Have you ever wondered what an invisible bind off is? Or how to do it for K1P1 ribbing? I show you two invisible bind offs in this video - Italian (also known as kitchener) and tubular. I also compare these two bind offs to the standard bind off as well as the standard bo worked in pattern.

I have been trying to do the Italian bind off for the last 4 hours with zero success, 4 minutes with you and I’ve got it! Such a clear explanation, especially when you likened it to Kitchener stitch. Thank you so much, you are an amazing teacher.
Thank you, great tutorial! How would you start if your first stitch were a purl? Thank you!
I’m so glad I found this video! Knowing it is a Kitchener bind off made it so much easier to memorize.

Thank you so much for this one- it was exactly what I needed. I’d been struggling, because the tubular bind-off was bulkier than I wanted; and I had waded through videos of Kitchener (the recommended bind-off for the particular project) that just didn’t work for me! Usually I go straight to your videos, but somehow I missed this one. You saved the day, and I’m going to share the info by referring people on my project page on Ravelry to this video. Clearest explanation of these two similar but different BO's. I also now understand why some people do the tubular on two needles, but honestly, that seems like an unnecessary complication to me. And seeing that the Italian BO (on one needle) is actually stretchier is helpful!!! Thank you!

Thank you so much for this one. I’ve tried it out on my v-neck 1x1 rib cast off, and it looks so much neater than simple cast off. Sits flatter too, especially in the V where I could adjust the ‘snugging up’. Well worth the extra time spent, so this one is a new favourite. Your P off K on, K off P on is simply perfect - so easy to get into a rhythm 😍🥰

A very tidy method for ribbing - having been a machine knitter I adopted the "sew off" method (rather than the traditional bind off) back then. This created an edge similar to the cast on edge. I will definitely try this Italian method as it seems a natural extension to what I am doing already and looks great!

Thanks, Suzanne, your videos are so clear and easy to follow! What bind off do you recommend for a 3 x 3 ribbing?
Hi, this is very helpful, I love the way you have shown all of the samples together at the beginning for comparison. Tell me though can you do the Italian Bind off or Tubular Bind off if you are working a 2 x 1 rib?
I love this teacher and your videos. ❣❣❣ Ms. Suzanne which of those BO are better for a sweater's waistband?

I have to say this is the BEST tutorial, time-efficient and clear! I understood after watching order videos but this one helps save time by doing two stitches at once! Could you please make another one to show the difference btw 4 slipped rows and 2 slipped rows in tubular bind-off as you mentioned? Also mine looks like there is a horizontal line in my tubular bind off. Why is that..??
Thank you for this video. Demonstrates the technique so well. With an odd number of stitches for 1x1ribbing and starting with purl stitch for ribbing would I just begin Italian bind off with a purl stitch?
Hi Suzanne. Can you use either of these bind offs for the ribbing at the bottom of a sweater? Which one would be best? Thank you so much. You've done such a good job explaining this, making it clear and user friendly!!!

Great and easy explanation. thank you so much for this. can I ask how we should start the setup and the next step if the first stitch is a no-knit edge, and the second one is actually the knit one? I'm a bit confused about that. thanks in advance.

If the purl stitch is first, then you go through the purl as if to knit, leave it on the needle, go through the knit as if to park, leave it on the needle, then go through the purl as if to purl and let if off the needle, go through the next purl as if to knit. Go through the knit as if to knit and let if off the needle, then go through the next knit as if to purl.

@@SuzanneBryan thanks Suzanne for such a detailed explanation. it really helps me :) now I can finish my sweater
Great video. How do you do the tubular bo if you are working on circular needles and not work that is linear and turned? Thanks!
Thank you for your tutorial, it is very clear and useful. I have one question though. You say it is necessary to use smaller needles for the tubular preparation rows. If the main stockinette body of my garment is for example on 4mm needles and then I switch to 3mm for 1x1 ribbing, does that mean I should go further down and knit the double knitting rows with 2mm needles?
Can you explain the last couple of stitches when using the Italian b/o in the round?
How can I use tubular type bind off for patterned ribbing of p1 k3 on the right side (k1 p1 k2 on reverse) ? I wanted to try the tubular-style bind off on my sweater and am not sure how to go about it.
How would this work on a cardigan with ribbing up a down both sides and around the neck? The tail would be impossibly long. Please help.
Thank you very much for this video!!! I do have a question and I don't know if you will see this as I seem to be two years behind. When you do the true tubular bind off, do you also use needles that are 2 sizes smaller for your last ribbing row before you do sew bind off? Thank you!!!
Suzanne, I have a question for you. I want to use the tubular bind off for the bottom of a cardigan and the sleeves. The pattern calls for the body to be knit on 4mm/US6 needles and switch to 2.75mm/US2 for the cuff. I dearly love the look of the tubular bind-off. You very clearly state in your tutorial that you MUST go down 2 sizes or there will too much flare. I’m guessing I should do a test swatch to see how bad it would be? Would the alternative be to stick with Italian bind-off? But you also said you went down 2 sizes for that one, as well. I’m talking about 200 stitches I’ve got to deal with for the body. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Hello Suzanne! Do you think the sewn Italian BO (without any set up rows) work well on the button bands? I assume this method will not flare out on the button-less band ? Thank you in advance for your advice. Celeste
Nicely done! I’m a beginner, but I found the last bind off row to be very clearly demonstrated. One big question is how would you do the second pass in the round?
@SuzanneBryan
3 жыл бұрын
Great question. The first pass would be done the same as you see here. The second pass in the round, you would slip the knits and purl the purls, but always bring the yarn forward to purl and back to slip. 🧶
I love both for cast on and bind off, but Tubular is my "go to".
@SuzanneBryan
2 жыл бұрын
Having a "go to" is so important. Thanks so much for watching, Mary! ❤️
Thank you for all of your clear tutorials! One question: what if a purl stitch is first?
@SuzanneBryan
2 жыл бұрын
If the purl stitch is first, then you go through the purl as if to knit, leave it on the needle, go through the knit as if to park, leave it on the needle, then go through the purl as if to purl and let if off the needle, go through the next purl as if to knit. Go through the knit as if to knit and let if off the needle, then go through the next knit as if to purl.

Thank you for asking my question. Now I can get on with finishing my sweater 😊
Hi Suzanne, I like your video explanations of Italian and tubular bind offs. However if I'm going to bind off the hem of a sweater, I need to b thread a very long yarn to work with.. like 150 inches or more. Wouldn't it be cumbersome to work with such a long yarn on a needle. ? Is there a way of gettin round it.
If knitting in the round could the tubular BO accomindate a draw string? For example around the neck of a sweater. This looks very nice. Thank you and Merry Christmas! 🎅🎄
