Purple Martin Season Recap (and how we overcame the sparrows)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Sparrow trouble near your purple martins? Don't lose hope. Fight back! Check out this review of our 2020 purple martin season, including how we did it.
Last year was our first year with a martin box and, sadly, sparrows overcame them after a few weeks of what we thought was going to be an easy success. This year, we replaced the box with a bigger owl-proof model, and monitored it diligently. Starlings were the first challenge, easily resolved by replacing the holes with custom SREH openings. The house sparrows were far more invasive and we spent many sleepless nights planning our counterattack.

I enjoy your martin videos... can't wait until spring! Last two years, I've conquered the sparrows with a new trap I bought online. I googled "repeating sparrow trap" What I got (for about 40 bucks and right away) was a simple trap that looks like it was made in the guy's workshop but it really works great. It's nothing for me to catch 15 sparrows in one afternoon. After a week or two, they give up! Love it

Very nice video. I also have PM. They are a great thing to have around, very entertaining. Well done and the Martins will love you for your effort.

I just got into martins myself, and at 5:58, I 've never seen them be aggressive like that. Sounded like a mocking bird does dive bombing you. Mine come down low to look but "seem" friendly., lol, cool martin house

So many Martins, I love it. We had a lot last year 2021, this year 2022 the sparrows are taking over the guards and the Martin house. It's so disheartening to see the Martins being taken over and losing there nests.

I would like to put up a Bluebird nest box, but where I live the House Sparrows and Starlings are too much of a problem. It's a lot of work to deprive the bad birds of the nest box, and it's heartbreaking to see the carnage they do after the Bluebirds have started nesting.

Make the hole in the box no larger than 1 1/2" and that will stop the starlings. I have resorted to dispatching sparrows with a pellet gun. They're an invasive species and have decimated the bluebird population in my area. Several years ago I lost 4 out of 5 nests of bluebird eggs due to the sparrows destroying the eggs. The sparrows even killed a mother bluebird while she was sitting on her eggs. No more!

I use in house traps with a bit of hay sticking out of the entrance holes to entice euro sparrows into the box. Works great. I can use them early because house sparrows don’t migrate so they’re already here. The ones that survive the previous winter are the strongest. Happy to say we’ve annihilated most of the population in multiple locations. Haven’t seen an English sparrow in my yard for the last 2 years.

I paint silhouettes of Martin's all over my martin house. I believe the Hawks get used to the painted spots and silhouettes of martins and they don't give it a second glance when the martins are there. It may even confuse the predator like the stripes on a zebra confuses the lion when they attack.

What about bird baths? If those birds were mine their nests would have indoor plumbing! :)

Awesome! Where are you guys located? We're in northern Indiana and this is our third year. We purchased a second rack... It gets addictive, start building your next! Sparrows are a pain here as well, we have a repeating sparrow trap plus the trusty pellet gun which is scoped in perfectly. As of now the sparrows have all given up! This has been an interesting start to the year though that cold blast that hit Texas earlier in the year, it really threw everything off. And if you're not a member yet, check out this website. I've just erected my first 2 story Martin Mansion just the other day and already got sparrows hanging around it. Looks like its pellet time. Love the trap door trick but my Mansion is too heavy as its on a pivot pole, but the pellets will do the trick i think. Hope i get some takers this year.
