Purnima Devi Barman: 'Dreams are the seeds of tomorrow's reality' | 2024 Whitley Gold Award Speech
Assam’s Dr Purnima Devi Barman accepts the 2024 Whitley Gold Award for galvanising a movement of more than 10,000 local women to save the Greater Adjutant Stork and its wetlands habit in Assam.
Filmed at the Royal Geographical Society, London, as part of the 2024 Whitley Awards ceremony livestream, Purnima explains how the local women, known as “stork sisters,” have transformed the outlook for the scavenger bird and become conservation leaders, advocating for the storks' acceptance at every given opportunity.
Purnima speaks of the need for involving communities in biodiversity conservation and harnessing 'people power' to protect species.
