This is true. I don't get blaming skincare from a particular region. Frankly it shows that sunscreens made from anywhere and everywhere can be iffy. How do we know if spf in popular western brands are accurate?

I haven’t seen anyone demonize Korean or Asian skincare or sunscreen in general. It is ok to look at the regulatory process and individual brands, or similar brands and ensure what they are saying is truthful.

The difference is Korean sunscreens were idealised as having this super advanced technology, and that was why they could pull off such an elegant formula with high protection, when no one else could. That’s why people are so upset.

I don't feel like I understand the difference between SPF testing in different countries though - I saw you mention it and I found a few studies, but they didn't really help me work out what could be going on apart from some skin type issues. Hopefully someone who knows a bit more can help...

I think I know a decent amount - enough to know what I do and don't know, and what I can and can't be confident about! But every time I talk to a proper sunscreen expert or listen to a talk from them I'm blown away by how much I learn, and I realise I've barely dipped my toes in! 😅

Very professional of you. I didn’t even think that Asian sunscreen are created toward Asian demographic in mind who day to day avoid the sun in all cost and wear spf daily no matter what the weather. Better response than DermAngelo who’s first comment towards this whole controversy was how American sunscreens ALWAYS gets it right. 🤡

I agree with this. Obviously Asians wear spf but I think they actually avoid the damage by umbrellas, hats, gloves and literally not going out when the sun is intense. If I am honest, that is the best way to avoid damage anyway! Being smart and wearing spf always. If it is going to be so hot, I am covering up, HUGE glasses and a hat (or wont be going out!)

Absolutely. I think no matter what as she said in the video, even if their claim is in accurate, you are still getting some protection even if you aren’t doing the most outside in the sun. But I think you’re right, they wear it but it’s the other precautions that are most likely helping them greatly. :-)

@@bazli83 I just learned to avoid it but when I started going on daily walks when the gyms closed and it became harder to deal with the sticky gross feeling while still getting burnt (I also wore a hat)... I actually tried this Purito sunscreen and it worked great for me. Maybe I just got a good batch? I dunno but this whole situation is interesting and I've learned so much within the last few days...

I’m still not over the fact that we are getting all of these info for FREE. I sincerely appreciate and thank you efforts, Michelle! Not skipping any of your ads is the least thing I could do! 💜

@Jasleen not to mention, Purito (on their social media) advertised this sunscreen as SPF 84!!!! Also, they KEPT it on the market and sold it to millions of people after they had already started suspecting it wasn't performing at SPF 50+, due to COUNTLESS consumers reporting burning, tanning and worsening of pigmentation. That's the reason why they were in the process of having it tested. I feel like so many people are missing the point. The point is not that SPF 19 is "better than nothing," the point is not that other brands have tested below advertised SPF, the point is that Purito was grossly negligent.

@Jasleen have you even watched the video? Purito's claim holds as much weight as INCIDecoder's claim because of INCI's bias (expecting to see an SPF 20) and testing on fewer people, as well as all the other issues she discussed.

@@devonellis9744 Be careful there is testing bias. Even if you buy any other sunscreen, it maybe way less than what is on the label. Some sunscreens get tested more than one because of this. I for one will keep using mine because it has worked compared to other AU and NZ brand advertising the same SPF of 50+. This means there are many factors involved. Have you observed your skin after using it? I have, and it's good.

Thank you for this video. Im asian, living in a tropical climate(Malaysia) and I agree with you completely on the type of sunscreens used. Asian formulated sunscreen is meant to be used for daily wear. Going to school/work where we are indoors but still occasionally exposed to sunlight while we are transitioning from one place to another. It is not meant to be waterproof or sweatproof. If we want sunscreen for prolonged outdoor wear, we will switch to the typical thick physical sunscreen like Neutrogena or Banana Boat meant for body n face. I use umbrella with uv shield during a hot day and you wont catch me basking under the hot sun or tanning. We love our air conditioned rooms. 🤣 but since uv lights passes through windows, we still need uv protection. If needed, i will reapply or use spf powder over makeup. Btw, my favourite sunscreens are from Skinaqua and Innisfree! :)

@@henrysmith180 yes we do...but for me living in the city, as mentioned, we love our air conditioned rooms. We do not stay out long. there are several types of sunscreen in the market as well. Which we use depends on the occasion. :)

Is there any way to test a sunscreen at home, with a uv light or camera or something?of course it won't be as accurate as lab tests but it might give some indication to see if the sunscreen is working

The last study you discussed really helped assure me that, regardless of what we know or don’t know right now, consistent sun protection (however flawed) is more important than anything else!

Thank you so much for this video. I have been following labmuffin for years, before you even opened your YT channel, but as I'm kind of a miser, I never really commented on articles or videos. The amount of knowledge and information I've accumulated thanks to you over the years is staggering. For this video especially, I just had to leave a comment to say how much I appreciate your professionalism. It is more apparent than ever that a scientist's perspective is so incredibly valuable and and thank you thank you thank you for putting the work into your content. Your views in this video manage to cover all sides of the story, and provide us with as much of an objective perception of the issue as possible. Not only do you manage to address a layman's consumerist concerns, but you also provide us with a better understanding of how even the science behind them is not black and white, and point out any fallacies in the process. You did so without devaluing or invalidating any side, while also drawing our attention to the factors that may contribute in plain deception. Not enough good things to say, more appreciated than you know! At this point, I guess time will tell as more testing results and official statements from the brand come to light. If I’m being honest... I still love the Purito unscented sunscreen. I enjoy putting it on, doesn’t leave a white cast, has no fragrance or essential oils, doesn’t sting/burn eyes and I love how beneficial the ingredients are for the skin. I’m darker skin, live in a colder climate & just started religiously wearing sunscreen this year. I’d say that’s still a step up for me

I love the Purito unscented spf and I’m going to continue using the tubes I have as I had no issues with this during the summer. I find this very soothing and moisturising. I wish Purito all the best an hope this issue is resolved

If you're going to keep using it try to wear protective UPF50+ clothing, and sunglasses, hats, gloves, and umbrellas -- these are priority!! These are critical to sun protection

@@tinngo3759 I’m also on tret and benzoyl peroxide, but because I’m hardly outside I’m honestly not fretting too much. I do agree the reason it had a pleasant feel was most likely due to this, but again I would avoid sunscreen because of how uncomfortable it made me feel and the unbearable pain of the stinging eyes was way too much to tolerate sometimes. I’m sure this wouldn’t be the same for everyone, but as for me I genuinely do enjoy the sunscreen, even with this info.

Love this video! Honestly this whole controversy just hits home how uncomfortable we are with uncertainty and fallibility. How easily we want to blame a brand/country/region on a good-bad spectrum. There are still so many limitations to cosmetic science, gaps in our understanding of how certain phenomena work, but yet people expect complete certainty in the information we’re given! We are too uncomfortable with not knowing everything. As a side note, I love how Dr Dray has constantly reminded her viewers that sunscreen is only one part of sun protection, on top of applying more than one sunscreen, reapplying, having protective clothing, and most importantly - AVOIDING THE SUN!!!

Uncertainty tolerance is a measure of emotional health; people who have trouble with it are more prone to anxiety disorders. It’s so much easier to jump to absolute conclusions ... but they’re often unable to capture the complexity of the world.

The way we store our sunscreen also matter I think. If the tube is being store near high heat or the bag having the tube is left near windows for long periods of time etc the formula will definitely go inefficient.

That's what has me concerned. The lab report said that they weren't sent the sunscreen in the original tube. If it was sent in some clear container and sat exposed to light for a while....

@@forensicmd there is just so much of information that I feel totally overwhelmed. And as it is said that even multiple labs can have very very different readings. And I personally think that if you want to remain under harsh sun for longer periods of time than the sunscreen that sports person use is the only one that can truly save you. Nothing else. No light formula can save you.

I think this is why I hate the recent influx of influencers saying “trust formulators, brands wouldn’t put anything intentionally irritant in skincare”. I know this isn’t exactly related to your point because we don’t know exactly what went on with Purito. But I don’t trust brands to tell me the quality of their products. I rely on ingredient lists because that’s all I have available to me, but I’m always suspicious because I know their ultimate goal is profit.

@@nicole93818 Yes but unfortunately ingredient lists can't say too much. There are a lot of KZreadrs who review products purely by a few things they know about the list, but chemistry is very complicated and formulations depend on multiple points. That's how Lab Muffin got my attention, she was saying how a product can't be judged by that. In this case this is also true, you can't determine the SPF by the ingredient list. It's great that so many people are interested in skincare but we shouldn't pretend to be chemists just because something looks like an easy conclusion. 1 + 1 doesn't equal 2, it's not that simple. I always try to be somewhere in the middle and get information from scientists to help.

I think the meaning is less about blindly trusting all formulators and companies when it comes to formulations, but it's more about simply be aware of myths and information people spoonfeed you, such as how "parabens are bad" or "petrolatum clogs pores".

It’s important to remember though that SPF is only a measure of UVB protection though and 90% of the rays that reach the earth are UVA which are present regardless of weather or season.

@@bazli83 I’m not advocating wearing sunscreen when you’re indoors 24/7. I’m just saying that weather and season aren’t as important as you’d think since UVA is more damaging and what we’re coming into contact with mainly. It’s also the recommendation of the American Academy of Dermatology (based on research I’ve looked at) then there’s no evidence you need unprotected sun exposure for Vit D synthesis.

@@bluefiss2966 I have tried Elta MD but I found that it pilled under my makeup. I always had these white ball clumps, did you experience that? The funny thing is that I found a way today to make Purito less greasy looking by putting on 100% Aloe Vera gel on as moisturiser beforehand. Then I read all this controversy haha 😂

This video was a band-aid of clarity over my broken little heart that ordered the sunscreen recently. I was so happy too that it didn't sting the heck out of my eyes and didn't leave my face looking like an oil slick. Luckily it's winter in Northern Europe during quarantine.

to be fair, the best sunscreen is the one you will use everyday, no point getting a great sunscreen but feels super terrible on the skin, but like she says, maybe treat it as a SPF 19 sunscreen for now, and bring out the big guns for the intense sun exposure

Thank you for bringing up the different types of usage in the different markets. I’ve noticed that Eastern market consumers also practice multiple forms of sun protection in conjunction with using sunscreen, whereas western market consumers think sunscreen is good enough to be the only sun protection they need

@@PL-qs1ig depends on the consistency. Even some sunscreens are formulated with by mixing physical and chemical sunscreen. If you that scared of the sun, vitamin c boosts the efficiency of sunscreen to fight free radical

Sae. I don't think this problem is specific to Purito... Many sunscreens don't live up to their claims but no one is testing them. SPF 19 is ... something.

I used it during summer in Spain and only got burnt on areas that got wet when I went swimming. I sunbathed and didn’t reapply as often as I should have (my hands were wet and full of sand from the beach). I’m not saying the SPF 19 claim is not true but it’s not an awful, useless sunscreen at all.

@@mariaecharri1375 yeah, this is precisely what I'm talking about, obviously would much rather brands were truthful, they absolutely should be if they manufacture things we use on our skin pretty much daily...But in this particular case I already have a backup tube of it, I like the product, I know I don't react badly to it and I probably don't need more than spf20 in the wintertime anyway where I live, so... all in all everyone should do their own risk assessment. And do what they're comfortable with. I'm comfortable using mine. Also...we should bear in mind that this entire scandal is very far from conclusive, so I don't think it's fair to cancel Purito entirely, but that's just my opinion 😊

I've been using this sunscreen for a long time and fortunately it works every time. When i went for holiday my body was quite tanned even though I had put some 50spf sunscreen on. Only my face survived the sun and i only used Purito.

This is extremely comprehensive and unbiased. Thank you so much!!!!

For now treat it as a SPF 19 sunscreen that you use to go to and from the office. Since skin reacts differently, so you need to see if it does protect your or not.

I appreciate the last study you referenced even though it's old. Use sunscreen daily and the right way regardless of SPF. If you don't reapply or don't apply enough it doesn't matter what level you use...you will damage your skin. That's what we need to concentrate on more than anything.

First, my sunscreen I just bought last week turns out to be SPF 19, now my frozen blueberries have Hepatitis A? Christ alive

Not sure where the outbreak/recall is happening at the moment, but Hepatitis A contamination happens worldwide, usually to water. It is more common in some places than others, which is why Hep A vaccines are indicated for travel to certain countries. Freezing doesn't kill Hep A, so if a berry is contaminated by Hep A before being frozen and then is used raw by a consumer, like in a smoothie, there is a possibility of contracting Hep A.

I'd almost say that the turmoil this controversy has caused is worth it, because you may just have made the best. sunscreen. video. ever. because of it. Almost. ( I, too, have bought bottles of Purito's Unscented Centella).

Some at home UVA performance tests (for results scroll down): I got a UVA meter (calibration and peak sensitivity is at 375 nm which is fairly close to 400 nm, the limit of the UVA spectrum that is the most difficult to attenuate) and set up home tests to test all the sunscreens, sun-masks, UPF fabrics, sunglasses/glasses, and hats i have on hand. This includes some old Purito sunscreens I ordered before the whole scandal. The Purito green level sunscreen actually worked satisfactorily based on my UVA meter test. Purito Comfy water (the mineral one) was the poor performer. Despite the limitations, difficulties and inherent inaccuracies of home tests, I am sharing some anecdotal/non-professional-but-best-attempted test results that I found encouraging. THE FOLLOWING RESULTS ONLY INDICATE INSTANTANEOUS RESULTS ON CELLOPHANE/FOOD WRAP and do not represent performance over time and with product interaction on real human skin. The results are done over multiple tries until the numbers become consistently credible, in an attempt to weed out excessive varying conditions such as distance from source, angle, area exposed, application thickness, and source intensity etc. -Purito Green Level: attenuated 95% UVA with just with a light, completely transparent application -Biore UV Aqua: attenuated 98% UVA with just with a light, completely transparent application -Purito Comfy water (mineral) attenuated 50% UVA with a relatively thick application. This is not good. -Several ZO-only sunscreens (Olay, zinc lipbalms, Ava Isa, 7%-23% ZO) ranged from 50% to 70% UVA attenuation for normal application amounts. Higher ZO concentration does NOT automatically translate to higher UVA attenuation. In fact Olay at 7% ZO outperformed several 20% ZO natural formulas. ZO also has a limit to its performance. Even an ultra thick completely opaque cake of it like maybe 1.5-2mm thick (if you wear this on your face you will literally look like a beginner geisha who doesn't know what she's doing or a clown or a baseball player) has a performance limit of 83 to 90% UVA. When you cake it on, the ZO concentration becomes important. 7% ZO maxes out at 83% whereas 20+% ZO can go up to 90%% (again this is when you cake it on impossibly thick). -Titanium Dioxide+Zinc Oxide mixtures (includes Aveeno ultra light and Live Clean baby) are the better UVA performers among mineral-only formulations (contrary to everything I was taught by the entire world over the last 20 years), these outperform ZO-only formulas and can at least get closer to 95+% UVA attenuation, but again you will need an "unwearably" thick layer to get there. Because of how intense sunlight and UV rays can get, I noticed that even minor differences in % UVA attenuation can actually make a big difference in terms of actual exposure amount in sensitive individuals. For example 95% vs 93% can actually translate to a big difference microWatts/cm^2 wise. So don't underestimate all the digits after the period. 99.999% is definitely different, and better, from 99%, in UVA language! In fact, 100% is best! Lastely, Purito's low third-party lab SPF result that caused a scandal is a UVB performance metric and is more indicative of the performance duration (how long you can go without getting burned..?). By my home UVA tests (on food wrap), I know at least it offers decent UVA protection "on paper". Maybe when you wear it for a few minutes the chemicals get oxidized/metabolized really fast or something. If you have read this far kudos to you.

Thank you! Can i still use the purito unscented green level indoors? And reapplying it every two hours, im infront of a window but i got curtains on it so not all the uv rays are coming through.

I was waiting to see what you had to say on this scandal and you didn't disappoint. You came with receipts!!! There are so many biases and variables to consider when it comes to SPF testing. Hello from Paris ! I love your vidéos !! In my opinion, it's easy to make sunscreen 50, but less is to give it the texture and comfort of a moisturizer... And since this is the expectation of consumers, brands are obviously trying to respond very awkwardly and even perhaps dishonestly ....

It's very disheartening to find out all of us in Types 4 and 5 aren't included in the testing. We have an alarming rate of skin cancer fatalities due to late diagnosis

Great video Michelle. I love Purito unscented spf as it’s been very soothing for my dry skin and I had no issues with this during the summer. I hope Purito are able to sort this out. I am going to continue using the tubes I have but use another spf. I love Japanese and Korean spfs and I am going to continue using them. You did a great job at explaining everything. Oh god! I really needed this video. The whole spf thing scarred me so much I just couldn't believe ANY sunscreen I use anymore. I use a sunscreen I get from local pharmacy and doubted that they could just be lying and I wouldn't even know about it. I'm from a third world country and the "reputable" Western brands are half the months' salary. Thanks a lot for this one. Especially the study with spf 16 at the end relieved me so much.

Thanks so much for this really detailed explanation. I was a Purito sunscreen user and had actually just purchased a new bottle. The video really helped put my concerns in context, and it made a big difference to me to understand the mechanics of how sunscreens are tested, and also how SPFs are theoretically modelled. I'm going to treat the Purito sunscreen as SPF 19 for the time being and be on the lookout for new information as it comes out.

This is such a good video, and the context provided at the end is sooo helpful to avoid panic! If you are esp. prone to watery eyes from spf the canmake mermaid UV gel is just perfect. It has no fragrance either so it's great for those who are sensitive!

this is so upsetting like i had been on a search for YEARS looking for the perfect sunscreen for under makeup, doesn't pill up, no white/purple cast, no funky smell, etc etc to the point where i'd given up affordability as a factor because it's such an investment. i bought two bottles recently because of your video a while back, even finding a specific online retailer just for this sunscreen and this video title is sending a shockwave through my heart!

Honestly, they still have my support. I don’t use the I scented one but the regular one, and I will continue to do so, because personally for my skin I have seen an improvement ever since I started using Purito. As long as the ingredients don’t do great damage, it’s fine by me though I can understand the outcry due to feeling betrayed. Keep in mind that so many variables and factors go into testing.

Thank you, Michelle! Purito sunscreen changed my sunscreen habits so much that I will continue to use it. I’m still bummed but I love it too much. Because it’s not waterproof or sweat proof, I never wore it to the beach or doing anything strenuous, so I never noticed any spots on my face.
