    So the main issue is the solution heating up and not being effective. How about a different rig that could be placed into a water jacket arrangement (sealed water jacket of course, no one wants water to come in contact with sulfuric acid!), then have a small submersible pump to circulate the water thru the jacket? I was thinking controlling the temp of the acid would allow you to run longer and do RGP and Gold filled, which would be much more efficient than an AP solution. What do you think?

    1) it may work but I’ve never tried it. The main problem would be heat. Stripping the micro-thin layer of gold plating off of gold plated material causes the cell to heat up. Once it starts to heat up it doesn’t work very well and has to be turned off and allowed to cool before continuing. The cell would probably heat up much quicker while trying to strip off the thick coating of gold on gold filled material. But that’s just my opinion because I’ve never tried it.

    A few things to look forward to: 1 The acid will get very hot, almost too hot if you run it too long. Take breaks after about an hour run. 2. There will be a yellowish brown foam that will float on top of the acid after a while. You might want to skim it off and save it. it will clog up your basket if not taken care off occasionally. 3. The Lead bar will turn black / goldish brown and slimy. You might want to wash it in water and dry it off every 2-3 sessions. I think the black might be oxidized lead, but could be gold plating on the lead. The acid will get VERY dark after a few runs, so it's hard to tell really what's going on under the surface.

    The scum is dirt. I plan to clean the scrap in ultrasonic and steam. This should make deplating much cleaner. Ive got a nice lid to cover it and put it away when it gets hot. After it cools and the black powder settles (takes days sometimes) then the cell can be restarted for more deplating. This will take a long time to do all of this scrap. Did you know you could use this method to refine CARAT SCRAP GOLD? The higher the carat the better. The process will remove the gold and turn it into gold powder. when the silver is encountered, it will simply fall to the bottom of the container. Then you simply dilute the ACID and extract the solids from the acid. The rest you should know. Nitric acid to dissolve the silver and Aqua Regia to dissolve the gold. I ran this experiment 4 years ago on a 14K gold ring using the exact same process you are using in this video. It took a couple of hours to reduce the ring to nothing, but it worked. When the bit of ring was too small for the clip to hold onto, i put it into a copper basket and finished it off. Try it on a small piece of carat scrap and let me know what you think. The time it takes to process the material is a bit longer, but it is an alternative to using so much Nitric acid. BTW, I had to stop my experiment half way through because the sulfuric acid got too hot for my liking. I did not have a re-circulating water pump to keep the glass from heating up.

    Neither the lead (Pb) not the Copper (Cu) will be attacked by the sulphuric acid (H2SO4) at the concentration of the pure drain cleaner as long as @Sreetips doesn’t rinse them with water. Dilute H2SO4 will dissolve both easily!

    @@sreetips I understand that the gold cathode wouldn't be the exact same identical size as your lead cathode... I thought that using a super thin strip of gold for the negative cathode (to increase the available surface area) is how a sulfuric acid reverse electrolysis refining cell was supposed to be set up, also using a 98% sulfuric acid as the electrolyte.

    What in the world is gold plating cell? And what is it used for?

  • @sreetips

    @sreetips

    3 жыл бұрын

    It’s a de-plating cell. I pass electric current through the junk jewelry as it sits submerged in the electrolyte. The current flows through the jewelry, into the electrolyte and to the lead cathode. The gold plating will release from the jewelry as a black powder and settle to the bottom of the cell. Then we siphon off the electrolyte and harvest and refine the recovered black gold powder. I’ll end up with bright shiny 24k pure gold.

    Great job, Man! That should work really well for what you have.. looks like to have plenty of material to work with! Have you tried a clay pot instead of copper mesh basket? If I remember correctly, gold ions will pass through the clay and slimes will stay inside the clay pot.. keeps the slimes from mingling with the deplated gold. Also, not sure who on GRF suggested it (fairly certain it was Lazersteve, but you should ad a small amount of glycerine to your electrolyte.. I don't remember the reason offhand.. worth asking the group about)
