😢 I had a unicorn dog in my 20s. She was a boxer/pit mix and trained beautifully with nearly no effort. Everything was a matter of showing her once, and she was a master. I never once bought treats for her. Her obedience literally just happened, almost magically. I miss her terribly, and I often wonder how amazing she could have been if I'd actually tried. I miss her terribly. Now, I have beagles... They're sweet as pie and cute as buttons, but I'm realizing my good girl set me up with wildly unrealistic expectations.

I taught my dog this using the "Look at me" cue. This comes in handy with puppies who are allowed to look at things but need a marker word to stop fixating. Used this the other day when we walked outside to go potty and a reactive doodle was passing by the neighborhood. My puppy got excited, but I was able to defuse it by saying "Look at me" and he did. after that he just stared at the doodle calmly until they turned a corner a block away.

Tom is hands down the greatest human trainer around. He trains us to speak to our canine companions, in a way they actually understand. Thanks to him, my wife and I speak dog and our 4 month old GSD is doing amazing. Obviously there are times that it’s hard, but Tom has equipped us with the knowledge we needed to get through those times. Thanks to Tom, we are raising our dream dog.

You cannot imagine how much this video helped me. I have a 6 month old aussie. It always seemed the dog did not pay attention to me but to the reward. I did your routine - now the eye 2 eye engagement is on the money. As well your heel routine - really change my life. I always had labs in my life and they are different. The aussie is smart and needs a better approach - and you are pretty much providing this better approach. Thank you, Tom ! I learned from you that with 2 pieces of beef liver you can train a dog for 15 minutes and build up a strong relationship.

Once I taught my Boerboel this 'look' command he learned to do such stair downs with us, could stair in my eyes for hours (sometimes with puddles under his lips if he anticipates food). He now uses this to communicate with us, especially if he needs something, just sits in front of you and stairs intensely so we just have to guess what it is he needs, usually he shows.

I'm loving these tips. They're not (too) simple at all but rather very realistic for those first days/weeks with a new pup. Also: my gosh Burleigh seems so calm! I was thinking I would have loved this series when we got our pup back in December and reflecting back on what we did and didn't do with her and I mostly just remember the struggle of training when she would not sit still for 2 seconds especially not if there were treats around which just immediately sent her into overdrive 😅 She's gotten better luckily and we're catching up on training!

I love Burleigh so much already.....I would love a Boerboel pup but am getting...I feel...too old to start with such a strong power breed. I'm 68 this year and have a nearly 9 yr old GR and also raise guide dog pups for Guide Dogs Victoria Melbourne Australia. So get a new pup each 14mnths and love all the training and preparation for their future role. I would have to give that up for at least a good year while I focus on the Boerboel pup. Not sure I could do that.....have been addicted to GD pups for the last 20 odd years. Really love your videos and Koda and Burleigh are a credit to your love and devotion to them. Just as your young son will be too. 👏👏🐶🐶👩‍❤️‍👨👶❤❤❤

That doesn’t mean the dog is underweight. Rib show is normal in boerbols, especially when exhaling. Huge puppies like this are hard keepers, too. I’m sure as a dog professional Tom knows what he’s doing. The “ribs are showing, feed more” logic is not always correct and can lead to over feeding if you’re not considering the actual body condition score.

Hey Tom, this might be a silly question, but I'm curious about the best ways to show our dogs affection. Beyond play, training, and good boy pats...do you endorse snuggling? Growing up, my dogs were constantly climbing onto my lap, leaning against me and (in my mind) initiating cuddles in a very human-like way. Looking back, I wonder if this was a good sign or something less desirable, like a display of dominance/ownership. Anyway, I am preparing to get my first dog as an adult and I would love to know if the "snuggles" that humans love to bestow on their pups is actually wanted/needed by dogs and healthy in the long run. Thanks!

I am religiosly following your puppy series. Thank you for the videos! But there is one thing I have always wondered, at what point do we stop rewarding them with food? And when we stop, how do we prevent them getting discouraged? Because obviously we can't walk around with treats all the time and it is not so nice if your dog listens to you "only" because you feed them.

We have been enjoying this series so far, and have been following it closely we just adopted a 2 month old BMC from animal control. Your tips have been a lifesaver as far as potty training, and crate training. However, I was wondering if you would do a video on how you handle the interactions between your young children and your new puppy when the puppy is playing to rough with them, nipping, or jumping on them. That would be super helpful to have, keep up the videos in this series coming we are following right along with training ours, and it is so helpful. I know you have some young ones as well so just wondering how you are handling that. We have 3 year old twins, and a 7 year old, and just managing that has been tricky, puppy wants to play chases the 3 year old and is jumping and nipping, kid runs away to avoid it and puppy thinks it's a fun game but the kid is terrified. Just stuff like that, we try to intervene as quickly as we can, but yeah.

We're no Tom Davis, lol, and we're first time pet owner so take this with a grain of salt... We have a 9.5 and 3.5 year old. We taught the 3.5 yo to freeze, put his hands up immediately and hold them across his chest, and to help really loudly if our pup (10 weeks old) nips or tries to nip at him. (He's the closest person to her size so of course the puppy wants to play with him.) We also always watch closing and will yelp, distract with another toy, or intervene in other ways when necessary. Another tip to encourage safe play: we let him roll a ball toward her. We also allow him to use a really long tug toy with her so his hands won't get nipped during playing. Hope this helps!

What kind of collar is this? I did train my puppy without treats. She had (still has) one particular toy she loved and I used this instead of giving food. She learned really quickly (Australian Cattle Dog). All the dogs we had before her were trained with treats, and my old guy (14 years now) is still so fixated on treats, he only does things for food.

What if your dog is not treat/food or toy motivated. My im working on more engagement with my pyr. He refused to hand feed as a puppy. He literally went without food for 4 days when he was 8 weeks old because he did not want to eat from my hand.

Absolutely will. Find his high value reward and go step at a time. Very worthwhile.

When do you transition away from paying with food to not paying and just giving verbal direction? Or do you always pay with food even in adulthood. I'd be concerned if the food payment suddenly stops, the dog would lose trust in the payment system.

What do i do when people want to pet my puppy when we go on a walk. Had a young girl try to pet him and he yelped and howled. She didnt touch him, he was clearly scared. He has been good with other encounters with people meeting him and petting him.

Will this engagement training work with two owners? My wife and I will be getting a puppy soon and I want it to be comfortable and have a good relationship with the both of us.
