    I’m so glad that Barkley is finally going to a new home where he will be much loved . He’s such a lovely little boy and it’s a shame it didn’t work out first time round. Bye bye Barkley 👋 Thank you for all your wonderful videos and expert advice this year. Happy Christmas to you, your family and of course all of your lovely Cavaliers.

    I'll never forget my sisters suprised "they have a fifth claw... like a thumb" when she first learned about the dew claw on our cavalier. I was relieved because I remembered feeling and seeing it a while back and thought I'd gone crazy. Fortunately we got their nails trimmed by more capable hands most of the time.

    What is the most important thing to keep your dog healthy? Of course, it is important to treat your dog when it gets sick, but it is equally important to take care of it and prevent it from getting sick. To do this, we recommend that you communicate with your dog on a daily basis to keep track of his or her health condition, and consult your veterinarian immediately if you notice anything out of the ordinary. For the sake of your beloved dog, strive for early detection and early treatment through frequent checkups and regular checkups at the veterinary clinic.🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶😻😻😻😻😻

    Your puppies are precious, but not everyone understands the work or responsibility for taking care of a Cavalier. Or sometimes their situation changes. Whatever, your family always takes good care of your puppies. Wishing Barklay a happy home and a Merry Christmas to you and yours, including Cavaliers.

    What a cutie--this color way (and Bella too) would do well in red clay western NC LOL. Using a hair dryer or vacuum or anything with that persistent noise is such a help to the new owners. Our breeder had had pups in house part of day with daily sounds and Gemma didn't even pay attention to a vacuum or hair dryer when we got her. Our Standard Poodles were groomed from an very early age so they all were good on a grooming table from the beginning but Gemma (our tri) was not--a good thing to get them used to, makes it so much easier. Goodbye Barkley--hope he has a wonderful dog's life in Boston.

    Noise socialization is an important part of what we do as breeders. Some people think that young puppies should be left alone, but getting them accustomed to touch, sound, and other sensory stimulation helps tremendously later in life.

    Charlie, can you please recommend how leave bangs for black and tan cavalier in place without it falling into her face. Looks like Barkley is still young and not have enough hair on his head yet. I have 3 years old and her hear is always in her eyes. Thank you very much. Just wanted to say, we watch your channel all the time, Apple is our favorite 😊

    Apple and Bella both have a tendency toward long hairs on the top of their heads. If you clip them off, you would leave too many hairs that will be dull and tend to mat. I use a hand stripping technique that actually removes the hairs at the follicle, stimulating growth of new, healthy, and silky hair. Stripping is not something that most pet owners can do without getting instruction from an experienced dog show handler or groomer. There's lots of good information in this article: www.playbarkrun.com/hand-stripping-dogs/

    Not sure exactly why the first family changed their minds, but we always believed it was best for the puppy if we allow maximum flexibility for the prospective owners. The good news is that the family that has him now is one we know well (they took one of our puppies 11 years ago) and they are keeping the name. Good thing - he already answers to it!

    My two Cavaliers had their dew claws taken out before I even got them so you don't take yours out is there a reason why?

  • @chaskat35

    @chaskat35

    Years ago, I routinely removed dew claws when the puppies were 4 days old. It was difficult to hear their cries, but I always felt it was worth it. Current research shows that it's not beneficial to remove front dew claws. First, the dew claws are attached to muscles higher up in the front legs, and cutting them off actually cuts the tendons that attach to those muscles. Studies are now showing that the muscles are more likely to atrophy if the dew claws are removed, and there are also indications that there is a higher risk of painful arthritis. Second, the front dew claws actually serve a purpose. When a dog is moving fast and has to make a turn, the front paws dig in to the ground, and the dew claws make contact to give the dog more traction. While this affects performance dogs (such as agility competitors) more, even non-athletic dogs can be negatively affected by the increase in rotation of the leg when running that's caused by the absence of dew claws. Of course, having the dew claws in place means that the owner has to be vigilant about making sure that they are trimmed regularly, and not allowed to grow in a circle. Rear dew claws are rare in Cavaliers, but if they are present, they don't carry the same danger of removal, and in fact should be removed to prevent being accidentally ripped off.

    He was actually called Pancho. We had a home lined up for him, but they changed their minds, so he stayed with us a bit longer than the others. But they had already picked out Barkley as his name, and we started using it, so he learned that as his name. We didn't want to confuse him, and it's a cute name, so we stuck with Barkley. The new owners love it too.

    @@chaskat35 Oh, I understand that LOL. Got to name few of my Standards, some breeders asked but we always ended up with a 'plain' call name. Had a wonderful Bentley (they named a litter alphabetical from same line so he was in second litter from that dam) but became just plain Ben. I had planned to name our Cav Emma but breeder had already. named her Gemma so that worked for us--and Gemma she is. This time of year its just hard to even write about past beloved dogs plus we lost our last (6th) Standard just a year next week. Gemma is now an only dog--and I think loving it--as we love her. All 6 of our Standard Poodles had them removed but this is part of dealing with grooming in the future--their feet get trimmed and dew claws are a hazard. I'm guessing Cavs don't have theirs done since as they are shown they are expected to be unclipped, uncolored, natural. Just a guess.

  • @chaskat35

    In the old days, I used to remove dew claws when the pups were a few days old. I always worried about the possibility of infection from cuting them off, and it also bothered me that the puppies would cry loudly when I did it. But then there was a study a few years ago that showed a greater incidence of orthopedic problems in the front legs of dogs that had dew claws removed. There are tendons and muscles attached to the dew claws, and they can atrophy as a result of removal. Also, the dew claws can serve a purpose - they help grip the ground when the dog is making a hard running turn, or when digging itself out from a hole. As long as they are regularly trimmed, they are better left in place.
