Punkt MP02 New Generation Review || A Second Chance! Punkt has released a new generation of the MP02. Its a global version that allows for it to be used anywhere. The Punk MP02 New Generation does not have Blackberry Services. Security is now handled through Punkt's own system. While it is a bummer that the old generation won't see updates, there is an improvement for the hardware and software of the device. The new OS is faster and Pigeon is more reliable as well.

While I can definitely see the appeal of a borderline featureless phone like this, it's hard for me to justify something like this at that price.

I see it as the "luxury line" of dumb phones. You can spend $800+ on a new smartphone, less than $100 on a Nokia style flip phone, or you can spend $300-400 on a minimalist phone like this. For me it's well worth the price

@@Sohodolliethis phone doesn't have a good battery backup. I own a Vivo y02s running android 12 and I remember leaving the phone unused and fully charged, with battery saver on, WiFi on and Bluetooth on, just to find out that after 14 days, the vivo y02s was left with 30 percent of battery life. I'll add my experience based review here as well: Got my mp02 delivered minutes ago. Already back in the box to be returned. Network was constantly going to 0% - 25% while my reception is just fine on the iPhone with that SIM (or at least, it's not zero 🙂). Lack of features is why I bought this phone but there is one feature it should have: it should be a working phone.

@@tyrusbever6728 Yes, I did, and it’s going very well, it certainly helped me break my smartphone addiction. It’s absurdly expensive for what it is, but it’s well made, simple to use and gets all the basics (calls, texts, bluetooth, hotspot) right. Battery life is the weak point, but I’ve found it good enough. It will be interesting to see if Punkt have finally got their act together-the forthcoming software update will be an important test of their commitment to the MP02 and their customers.

I used the Nokia 8110 for 18 months, which has a reasonable price, custom OS, and removable battery. Compared with 8110, the new MP02 has a great design and signal-support(pigeon) except for its price. Maybe without the BBS, the new MP02 might have the possibilities to be developed by every one(Q to the Punkt). If I had three phone to choose: mudita pure, the light phone 2, and the new MP02. Of course MP02 is my choice!

Thanks for this review. I took the plunge and bought the original MP02 not 6 months ago. So, I'm feeling a little bummed that they have released an upgraded model! 😞 Feels by releasing the upgraded model that they acknowledged there were (and are) hardware & software issues with the original MP02. Especially, with Pigeon, which was the main reason I bought the phone. As you say in your review, it would be great if Punkt offered existing MP02 owners an incentive to upgrade! Looking forward to your live stream with Punkt in Jan! Love it if you ask them to comment on this. 🙂

But if you change the Network Type to 3G, it works fine. I loved the design of MP02 but the keyboard and to some extent software are just woeful. It’s overly ‘smart’ predictive along with a keyboard that doesn’t always register clicks makes it super frustrating. Hopefully they’ve fixed that. Thanks for the review. I agree they should offer a significant discount to existing users to buy back their cruddy 1st gen hardware. I believe they’ve already somewhat fixed the keyboard silently, but they’ve not publicly acknowledged it.

I was attracted to this phone because Signal is already my primary messaging platform and this would give me the option to switch to PC to respond to messages if needed. However, it seems that due to the way Signal connects devices, registering it with Pigeon will lock Signal to the MP02 and I will no longer have use of the desktop app. Is this correct? Cool review. Thank you for that. I've been using the Punkt MP02 for almost 2 years now and it's still working okay. I bought it because I wanted something simple and the design is very smart. However, the few flaws it has and the price are to me something to consider. It's a Swiss brand but produced in China. Does the brand consider the ethic and environnemental issues beyond the design? The thing it does without frustration is calling, but then again the battery drains like hell like 1% a minute and don't even try a pigeon call for too long if you're not loaded 100%. If I call a lot, I have to plug the device everyday which is a shame. Then the text messaging, the T9 is not smart at all. When you enter a new word, it automatically suggest this new word at first even if it's a word you never use. So the words you always use come long after. I told them that and the replied that I had to reset the phone and loose all the text messages for 2 years as there is no way to archive those messages. I just think their marketing with the old Mp02 was a bit strange as how are you supposed to call if you don't have any battery and how do you text if you can't make a sentence quickly. Even in their manual document, they suggest to use the email instead. I find a bit strange to come out with a product which obviously was not fully developed and had a lot of major issue. Overall now, it does the job and still looks good.

I would like to know from Punkt if the problem with delayed messages with Pigeon for the 'old' mp02 is finally going to be solved? I bought this phone for Pigeon, but I am very disappointed in using it. I have been promised several times that it will be solved, but that does not have to take a year. Receiving messages sometimes takes 6! hours. So, is Pigeon going to being fixed?? Untill that i have noting good to say about this company. Greets from the Netherlands

@@JoseBriones Well, since the recent update of Pigeon, receiving messages has improved, but still dramatically. Even worse is the problem that has been added. I can no longer send messages in groups, (someone else?). The 'transmitting symbol' keeps running and does not send anything. Reinstalling didn't help either. So only p to p communication is possible with pigeon.
