Punk Rock vs Sharia Law

Ойын-сауық

Indonesia's punk scene is one of the world's biggest and most vibrant. It's a place where the country's silenced youth can revolt against endemic corruption, social conventions and their strict families. But in the world's largest Islamic nation, political authorities and religious fundamentalists persecute this rebellious youth movement. Nowhere is the anti-punk sentiment stronger than in Aceh, Indonesia's only Sharia province, where 65 punks were arrested and detained at an Islamic moral training camp in which they had their heads shaved and clothes burnt. We travelled to North Sumatra to track down the last punks in Aceh, who still live under constant threat from the sharia police.

Everything they said about punk rock is an accurate reflection of the punk scene in the USA too. In the USA you know who is being trendy simply by them claiming "punk rock is not political it's just about the music" while the music reflects the lifestyle. Even proto-punk was political. Punk rock is a movement and it's not meant to be trendy because we all know when things become a trend the lifestyle will get replaced by the next trend.

I’m Indonesian but I was raised in America. Even though I was raised in a Muslim household with going to Sunday School throughout my childhood and taking online quran classes, I guess I can be seen as a “rebel” since usually I am into punk/alt/scene culture, I’m part of the LGBTQ+ community (i am the B), and I now identify as Atheist. This video is like a breath of fresh air for me since I always knew that Indonesia is a heavily Islamic country and I never knew that Indonesian punk culture exists, It does devastate me that punks are seen as Aliens all because they’re just expressing themselves and they’re not doing any harm towards other people. It feels like I connect to them since I never got to fit in with the Indonesian people in my area since they’re usually strict with Islam traditions like how the girls must wear a hijab in public, etc and everyone just sees my style as “taboo”. As much as I respect people of Islam, I don’t want to be forced into it since I feel like religion should just be a choice for everyone to decide.

1). I do agree there is huge corruption issue in aceh that makes them can't develop the country better than other countries around southeast Asia. And it does makes sense punk exist in aceh 2). Mostly people are actually aware what these "punks" fight for and they do agree with them. But most of "punks" get involve with drugs issue, violence and property damage which makes people are uneasy about them. 3). Yes it's true in Islam you have to support leader of the country, IF he is a good leader. So, that statement is not entirely true. 4). The concert stage is changed from punk show stage to model runaway show? I thought it's haram in Islam for women to show their figures and shapes in public? Punk is forbidden but modelling is allow? How irony. That being said, now there is better platform to fight for justice. Malaysia manage to do it, I'm sure Indonesia will do the same.

I'm muslim Indonesian living in Jakarta. The problem is, there's a stereotype in Indonesia about punks being violence, druggies, etc.. So it's not just about religion. That maybe one of the reason they got secluded in Aceh and sentenced in Sharia Law. Even Punks in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, sometimes still got stereotyped like that. Because punks culture does exist in Indonesia for as long as I can remember and yeah, some really just a bad person, some don't. Also, as long as it's a modest clothing and covering awrah, it's okay to do modelling. Not showing any suggestive pose too. For punks, I mean as long as they didn't committed any criminal acts, punks being punks is okay. Punk is not only in Aceh. And I don't support sharia law tbh.
