PUMA IFV - The Most Advanced Infantry Fighting Vehicle in the World

Ғылым және технология

We will discuss about the Puma Infantry Fighting Vehicle, a fully armored combat vehicle with excellent protection and effective direct fire support in the battlefield. The Puma Armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle (AIFV) is a tracked vehicle produced for the German Army by Projekt System & Management (PSM), a joint venture of Rheinmetall Landsysteme and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), under a program authorized by the German Federal Parliament in 2002. It has been in service with German Army since 2015. However, as of August 2021, 350 units of the vehicle had been delivered in total. Previously, the Puma program was known as the Igel and the Neuer Schuetzenpanzer (NsPz).

the problem is not on the vehicle side, but on the side of the Bundeswehr, wich scrapped its logistics and maintenance branch in 2011. due to that, many systems could not be maintained in the Bundeswehr and required external providers. this is slowly returning to normal operation (with in house maintenance etc), but still the Bundeswehr has some major maintenance problems remaining. The Puma in question were for weeks in combat excercises prior to the break downs and had only troop level field maintenance done. considering that, tthey held up quite well.

They also stated that US forces equipped with the Puma would sustain 28% fewer losses of occupants and vehicles in combat as compared to the Bradley. They didn't find any vehicle matching their requirements, so they rebooted the competition. Their new IFV has to be capable to operate optionally unmanned. Contenders are the Griffin III, Lynx OMFV, a version of the AS-21 Redback, Liberty IFV and another unnamed one from BAE Systems.

Drones... Modern warfare has changed for the Western theatre and all Western military's should be adapting their weaponry and tactics to incorporate this , just as Blitzkrieg changed warfare all those years ago with the use of the new weapons so too should they change now... Drone carriers could well be the next IFV for long range engagements followed up by infantry to take and hold the ground after combined arms have destroyed the enemy forces that hold and can engage any troops entering the battle zone. Land warfare may well evolve into a type of warfare more akin to Naval warfare where ships would not see each other but engage and destroy their opponent. Just my thoughts , but a long time ago I did a survey about drones in warfare and stated that drones could change the battlefield in a massive way. We are seeing some of it in Ukraine right now , but the potential of drones has still not been unlocked anywhere near where they evolve to.

lynx is in the end an offshoot of the Puma. Lower protection levels and greater modularity (like a choice of turret and weapon options, crew compartment size etc) and a bit specked down in comparison to Puma. It is 7m€ per unit cheaper than Puma, so dont expect it to outperform it. (10m€ for Lynx, 17m€ for Puma) Because Puma is not really exportable, due it being tailored to the demands and requirements of the german mechanised infantry (like fighting alongside MBT´s, not just supporting them) and includes certain technologies, germany does not want to export to everybody, Lynx was developed as cheaper and more acessable alternative for international customers, based upon the developements of the Puma Project.
