I've been heating my home in Massachusetts 100% with wood since 1998, we don't burn any gas or oil. The big stove in the basement burns 24" logs and the little one on the main floor burns 12" - 14" logs. My three favorite tools for heating with wood are a pulp hook, the Kindling Cracker, and a Zippo Firefast bellows.

Hi just found your channel new sub here. By the way what you are showing is a hay hook, I unfortunately made the same mistake when I bought what I thought was a pulp hook. A pulp hook has a special square end on the tip. The hay hook can work on soft woods but when you get most hardwood the hay hook will bounce off. Good luck with your channel

Between pickaroon, long handle tongs, and short handle tongs, I haven't tried these pulp hooks. Looks interesting. Doesn't need as much of a strike as a pickaroon.

There isn't really a difference. Some modern pulp hooks have cant-hook style bends, but many antique pulp hooks were indistinguishable from hay hooks. Back in the day, logging and log driving was just the winter time vocation of farmers, so there was overlap with tools.

There is definitely a differance between a hay hook and a pulp hook. Daylight and dark you could say. The weight, the shape and the point. Try them both and you will throw that hay hook away!

This is an interesting comment in the last 20 min I just realized I had a pulp hook already. Tried it out realized that it wasn't very good. It is just a hay hook. Read this comment ground a square point. Not very good.. then watch buckin Billy Ray video on pulp hook. He shows a barb on it. So i filed a barb into my mild steel hay hook with an equilateral triangle file. Holy crap its definition of night and day! This one is too soft being mild steel, would only last a few logs. Im going to forge one out of some coil spring and then harden n temper it after I rough file in a barb.
