Pulling a Calf with a Surprise at the End!

I was watching a cow in labor for some time and decided to bring her in the yard to assist. We ultrasound all of our cows which left us with a surprise at the very end!

Nice job!! Atta girl getting things done...when I was 16.... I fed 200 veal calves at 5a.m., 5 days a week...& milked cows on Sundays so the hired hand could have one day off a week! Also milked cows with my cousin, & for my uncle.

Lol, I used to feel so sorry for myself on winter mornings when I was feeding calves as a girl. Though I loved a lot of the life, I couldn't wait to get off the farm. Two years of city life and I skedaddled back home as fast as I could!

Sounds like how human road and railways, truckies etc men delivered babies out in remote rural Australia when there was no way to get mum to hospital and no other women around to help because males outnumbered women in the bush. The men did a great job. They got very good at it. Especially the moral support they gave the woman. Even if they were a bit rough and yelled out comments like "Quick, grab the shovel mate... Scoop bub up before it hits the ground and cracks its skull..." They weren't at all scared of delivering a baby....Just all part of everyday work digging ditches, fixing roads etc.

My dad, (who was my step dad, btw) taught me how to see things through spiritual eyes through the eyes of a farmer. My biological dad, (who was my knight in shining armor) would not have been able to do that. (funny thing now, my step dad and I are cousins). I was about 11y/o, and one evening after they had just got done milkin' cows. Sun was just beginning to fall asleep. We stood there watching the shadows approach the corn growing in the field. And I heard an odd sound. I looked up at my step dad's face and watched a tear stream down his face. And I asked why he was cryin'. He just said, "You work so hard to get the crop in and you wait and wait...Then you finally see evidence of your labor like that." The promises of God are yes and amen. If I had it to do all over again. I'd buy my own farm and be the farmer. I miss the farm life. I miss my old garden. I can at least buy produce from the farm store and can it still. If offered a farm life, I'd take it in a heart beat.

@Rollag Ranches... Don't give up on Twin heifer immediately!! I raised Pinzguaer crossed cattle for years and had 4 sets of twins within four yrs from all different cows and the two Bull /heifer pairs, both heifers were fine, not freemartin. I raised calves from both of them! Other two sets were same sex pairs, one bulls, other heifers! Maybe it's a breed characteristic. Pinzguaer tend to twin a lot. Some crossed with Simmental and original bull in commercial herd was 7/8 Pinzguaer 1/8 Ayrshire.. So his heifers had a lot of milk! He was an amazing bull! I had his hide tanned when he finally over did himself spring breeding season back in the 80's! This brings back fond memories! Congrats on your job well done! I've become a new subscriber!

I was catching the school bus home in the country as a school girl when, much to my shock, a cow gave birth in the nearby paddock before my very eyes... She then casually got up and took a drink in the dam and had a few bites of grass. Then went to see to junior, to lick him, greet him etc. But hr was already up and moving and the ying to get to his milk source as she tried to teach him a few manners, like "say please" and "thank you, mum". It is amazing how fast and easily the birth happens and how fast they both recover from such a natural trauma. But it's good to have humans to help if complications arise.

I had two kids, the birthing pain is different than if you for example hurt yourself so bad that tears comes out. Usually there’s no tears of pain, only tears of happiness right after, and women do it again! If the birthing pain was like breaking a leg or someone drilling your root canals then I would consider. It’s just like a huge muscle cramp that increases aching that’s why you just want the baby out, and that aching is so bad that the final thing, when the baby does come out, doesn’t even hurt as much. It’s amazingly made.
