Pull Up On The Right Manoeuvre & Reverse Back 2 Car Lengths; New UK Driving Test 2020

Learn how to do Pull Up on The Right, Reverse 2 car lengths and then re-join the traffic.
In this short video we will show you how to do the ‘Pull Up on The Right’ manoeuvre from the UK Driving Test, as simply as possible and how to correct if it goes wrong. This is one of the 4 practical driving test manoeuvres.
The aim of this Manoeuvre is to pull up on the right safely using very slow car control and effective all-round observations, and then reversing back 2 car lengths before re-joining the road again. It’s a good idea if another car or a pedestrian comes towards you from anywhere to stop and work out If it’s safe to carry on. Don’t forget once you have worked out what they are doing to recheck everywhere else again before continuing.
This Pull Up on The Right Manoeuvre is done on public roads and not at the Driving Test Centre. So it could happen at any point in the test.
If you have any questions about Pulling Up on The Right, please comment below and we will reply ASAP. We Are driving instructors that teach people to Pull Up on The Right every day, so we have great experience to answer your questions with, and are happy to help.

    Just passed my test this morning, with 5 minors (funnily enough, me being a bit too slow and cautious 🤣)!! Wanted to say a huge thank you for posting all the content that you do. Without it, I know for sure I would've failed, even with instructors. Every single night I've binged your videos, and whenever I've had a lesson, I've made sure to learn from mistakes or from minor/majors that you mention. Thank you again for all you do 🙌🙌🙌

    No as long as you are in control of the car that's ultimately all that matters. But putting it on when you in the test might help you to remember to do your POM before reversing. Mohammed Ibrahim thanks :) The new test is about the same as the old one some but are easier some harder so overall the same. So in terms of hours the DVSA quote the average person needs 42 hours with a driving instructor and 20 hour s of private practice. Hope this helps ?

  • @ThinkDriving

    @ThinkDriving

    6 жыл бұрын

    pete walsh stopping is the safest thing to do. But be ready to move as soon as they are gone. If you feel they are confused by your actions and a signal would help them understand then consider putting one on. Hope this helps

  • @rawmaths6021

    @rawmaths6021

    Hi, I disagree. If a vehicle is approaching from behind then they are on the correct (left side) of the road and therefore you should not need to halt your reverse as they can continue on their course uninhibited. HOWEVER, if a vehicle is oncoming from the front, then they will be on the wrong side of the road as they pass your car (and any other parked vehicles that may be in front of you). In this instance, if you were to continue reversing then you are a moving target and this is hazardous as they would have to remain on the wrong side of the road longer than necessary to get around you. This would be more of a problem if another vehicle then did approach from behind whilst they are still on the wrong side of the road. I would say that you should definitely stop for oncoming traffic as your reversing directly affects their course, whereas you should not unnecessarily have to stop for approaching traffic from behind as they can continue on their way. As for signalling, your reversing lights will be signalling your intention that you are reversing.

  • @ThinkDriving

    @ThinkDriving

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your comment, you are not wrong there will be cases when a vehicle coming from behind that it could be ok to continue, but that is on a very case by case basis. To cover all of these the video would be an hour long. So as a starting point which where all driving lessons start from the best advice is stop if you are not 100% sure. With experience you will be able to make better and better judgement calls. Regards the signal again you are right the reversing lights do tell them you are reversing but not necessarily in a straight line so if you think the other driver may be confused by your action a right signal could help in some cases.

  • @rawmaths6021

    @rawmaths6021

    6 жыл бұрын

    TDS your videos are great and succinct. I agree you cannot cover everything and that is why these comments are there to help with constructive advice rather than the abuse you so undeservedly get elsewhere in the comments for things outside of your control. Manoeuvres are all about control, observation and accuracy. Observation involves knowing where to look and what to look for before deciding how to deal appropriately with what you see. Whilst I agree that this is on a case by case basis, thinking about who you are likely to affect with your actions (reversing in a straight line in this case) and who is likely to affect you, should be encouraged early on, leading to more appropriate action rather than have a default response of stopping uneccessarily. Also a right indicator signal is not recognised by the highway code as 'I am continuing backwards in a straight line', if there were driveways to the right (as there are in the video), it might be interpreted that you are going to reverse onto a drive to the right.

  • @ThinkDriving

    @ThinkDriving

    6 жыл бұрын

    I agree, these comments are very useful for discussion. Making these videos can be quite hard to aim it at everyone. For example if i was making this video for people with 20 years experience of driving then it would a completely different video. From a teaching learners point of view we are dealing with people who are very new to driving and still prone to mistakes, which is why stopping is what we suggest for 2 reasons, the oncoming car may distract from the task of reversing in a straight line. Also the learner may not be where they think they are, they may not have reversed as straight as they think they have so it better to be safe than sorry by stopping. Again you are right, a right signal could be misleading in some cases, so this to is on a case by case basis. But for example if your car was pointing slightly out at the back with the reversing lights on it may look confusing to the oncoming car hence why they may be confused by the new drivers actions. In this case maybe taking off the reversing lights and putting a right signal on may be the best option. Hope this all makes sense :)

    2.50 are you waving to the oncoming to say sorry for scaring you while I'm attempting to complete a dangerous manoeuvre as safe as possible. What if a car without dual controls e.g. A parent supervising their child , misjudges a gap and pulls over to the right in front of a vehicle or cyclist? What if you make a mistake as an ADI, will it be the fault of your pupil, you as the supervising driver for encouraging your pupil to attempt this potentially dangerous manoeuvre or the examiner if a collision happens on test. Is your role as an ADI to teach safe driving for life?

  • @ThinkDriving

    goldenkoi23 yes our role as a Driving instructor is to teach safe driving for life hence why we are trying to help people do this as safely as possible. We are only driving instructors we don't make the test. We have voiced our concerns to our local test centres and in the consultation. But where there is nothing we can do, making this video to help people understand the dangers that could occur, especially parents who do supervise there children. This video will help people like them as well as learners who are with driving instructors.

    This video is slightly misleading . Whilst on the move the pupil will be asked to, "Pull up on the right when it is safe to do so ." When stationary the pupil will be asked to , "Reverse for about two car lengths , keeping reasonably close too the kerb ." If at this point another vehicle pulls up behind you , the manoeuvre can not be completed , and the pupil will be asked to drive on . If at any time a vehicle pulls up in front of you , and obstructs the pupils view of the road ahead , the examiner will take control of the situation and give appropriate advice . This is how the manoeuvre will be carried out on a test , according to the official pamphlet sent to all driving instructors . The pupil will not be expected to pull up on the right behind another parked vehicle as shown in this video .

    Stephen Gamble hi Stephen thanks for your comment. This video show the worse case scenario and is more realistic to real world driving. In the real world they won’t have an examiner to guide them if it gets hard so this helps them learn how to deal with it for them selfs.
