    Thank you so much for this tutorial, so helpful. You got my thumbs up!!! I was able to follow, stopping the video when necessary to follow you step by step. My cardboard insulation tube was taped too. One suggestion, could you put a closep focus on the gold and silver wiress and the connecting screw turning clockwise etc. so it is clearer? Otherwise, it was excellent instructions and I was able to follow, fix my lamp and save a lot of money. Much appreciated. Ps, Thanks for not playing music in the backgroudn, as it is so distracting. Thanks again.

    Thanks Annie. Sorry it's not a perfect presentation. Working impromptu with the camera in the way is difficult to get everything aligned and shown properly. But I figure something is better than nothing. Too, you can open your KZread settings by taping the gear icon, and select a slower playback speed. I find this helps with certain videos.

    Thanks man this is the video that gave me the confidence to try disassembling the fixture, mine came apart exactly like yours with the taped cardboard and everything, I discovered the plastic wheel the chain spins when you pull, is cracked and therefore clearly beyond repair, but I found I can just buy replacement fixtures that will fit right on. Tomorrow I’ll compare the price of a new lamp vs two new fixtures (both have broken pull chain mechanisms)

    Nice! I’ve an old vintage lamp with a broken off chain. Thankfully it broke off in the On position so I can still use it but have to plug /unplug it every time. Looking for an older socket or just a chain.. if it’s possible to replace the chain? Peace.

  • @ItsFixable

    You'll need to disassemble and look at your socket. With some, you can access the cam where the chain simply snaps into a slot, and replace the chain. The socket I removed was like that. But the socket I installed was sealed with rivets at the switch mechanism, so the chain connection wasn't accessible.

    In my experience, if the chain is stuck you usually need to replace the socket as I did in this video. The chain ratchet/spring mechanism is all intragal with the socket and must be replaced as a unit.

  • @ItsFixable

    @ItsFixable

    Yeah, I'm with ya Mike. I ended up with two different color chains, though this wasn't an antique and you can't really see the chains when the shade is on. The socket I removed had the ability to thread a chain into it and clip it into the cam which activates the switch. That whole part of the mechanism was open for access. Perhaps you can find a sock like that? this too allows one to install a custom length chain without the need to couple on an extension piece. The socket I install was simply a sealed unit.

    I’ve got a ceiling mounted pull chain socket that has power but the no bulb I try works in it. I even bought another and the bulbs don’t work in it either even though they work in other sockets. Any idea what’s the problem?

  • @ItsFixable

    @ItsFixable

    2 жыл бұрын

    If the pull chain switch works, and you've checked and confirmed power in the socket using a volt meter, the problem is likely the contacts are not touching the bulb properly. The contact at the bottom of the socket is usually the culprit. Shut off the power, then reach the bottom contact with some sort of "L" shaped tool and pry up the contact so that it'll touches the bottom of the bulb when screwed in.

    This video is great. My nutty neighbor replaced the chain with the turn knob:((( I cut off wire and want to do it myself. It's all clear in the video but I'm still scared about which part of the wire to add to gold and which one to silver. Can you please guide me on this? Thank you

  • @ItsFixable

    The HOT (+) lead goes to gold. The Neutral (-) lead goes to silver. Ways to identify: the hot lead is often black in color or has a smooth cord casing. The neutral is often white or has a subtle rib or line on the casing. If you don't find it marked in some way, and its a polarized plug (one prong wider than the other), the narrow prong is the hot. And if the lamp is so old as to not have the polarized plug, it would be wise to change the plug to one that is and then wire the socket accordingly.

    @@ItsFixable Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate it. The thing is both wires are the same color and same size. would it be the case when it doesn't matter which wire goes to gold and which one in Silver?

  • @ItsFixable

    @ItsFixable

    9 ай бұрын

    @@MM-oq1lb It'll work either way but it's much safer if the hot (+) is wired to the gold. Otherwise the light socket is live even when the lamp is turned off. So, if the bulb is removed for any reason without unplugging the cord, one might get shocked if they reach into it. Or if the bulb breaks, there is potential for shock/spark etc. even though the lamp is off. That's why it's best to wire it correctly.

    1) Be sure your bulbs are good. Test them. 2) Test the sockets with a volt meter (carefully). If no voltage, you have a bad cord. 3) If you have voltage in the socket, be sure the bottom contact touches the bulb when installed. You can bend up the contact a bit.

  • @ItsFixable

    If the watt rating tag you see is adhered to the socket body, it refers to the maximum that sock will handle. Usually you can replace this socket with a higher rated one. 3-way sockets are often rated higher. If the label is on the base of the lamp, it usually refers to the entire lamp's construction and its ability to handle electrical load (and heat). The plug, internal wire, and lamp shade all are in this determination. In this case you should not change the socket or bulb to anything higher than the rating. For example, some lamps have very thin internal wires in a restricted space that will overheat with a higher load, or plastic shades which can melt or burn with excessive heat.
