Thank you for very good demonstration and direction on replacing a socket. My husband passed away a couple of years ago so at 71 I am having to learn how to do a lot of things on my own. Today I replaced a non-working socket and feel good about my accomplishment.
he is not a showman or entertainer he STILL was kind enough to take time to show us how to logically replace a light socket THANK YOU SO MUCH i really needed to see this
*WARNING: wiring does matter! smooth = hot = gold BUT ridged/ribbed = neutral = silver.* i appreciate the op, david, for taking the time to make and share this video. however, among the minor mistakes of not using all items mentioned, using items not mentioned, and not reminding people to unplug, the most dangerous mistake is that of not indicating the importance of polarity and which wire goes to which screw post. unlike what was shown, it does actually matter. there is a hot wire and neutral wire. if you carefully drag your thumbnail across the outer edge (away from the center split) of the wires, you'll feel that one has some ridges or ribbing to it. the other wire does not have those ridges. the smooth wire is the hot electrical wire and should connect to the brass or gold screw. the ridged wire is the neutral electrical wire and should connect to the silver screw. *remember*: smooth = hot = gold BUT ridged/ribbed = neutral = silver.

Mine doesn't have screws at all...not gold nor silver. It's just a brown piece with two holes for the wire to go into. Not a cheap lamp either!

The socket on my old lamp had + and - terminals labeled, and the new socket does not, so this is exactly what I needed to know. Thank you!

I see you made this video 10 yrs ago and just so you know it is still helping people 10 yrs later. Thank you for the tutorial my favorite lamp works again!!
I’m a 77 yr old lady. I followed your instructions Dave. And it worked!
PRACTICAL and straightforward, I ordered a socket replacement due to a janky switch. Appreciate this easy-to-do and clear and concise video. 5 stars ⭐️ for ease of understanding.
You know, I used to be a guy with a broken table lamp. Not any more thanks to you. If you keep making good videos like this, you'll make me appear to be a competent handyman.
Super video! I was able to fix two lamps in 15 minutes for a cost of 4.25/per lamp. I am not a handy person and I am amazed and thrilled that I was able to do this myself. Thank you so much! I especially like the advice about changing to a one-way switch from a three-way switch. I agree that the one-way switches seem hold up better. Thank you again.
Thank you so much for this video. I repaired my lamp in minutes. I have fixed a few things in my home but usually shy away from anything that involves any type of wiring. I have never tried to repair a lamp before today. I appreciate the clarity in which you explained the repair process.Keep on helping the handy women of the world :-)
*WARNING:* the ribbed wire is supposed to be connected to the Silver contact, the smooth wire sheath is supposed to go the Gold contact. The lamp will operate if the wires are backwards BUT you create a shock hazard to yourself because the hot side is running in the exposed socket contact. Google it if you need clarification, I'm new to this but I know there is a certain way to wire them *properly*.

Yeah, you are very correct with this warning. Everything you say is true, both the proper fastening method and what can happen if you reverse them.

I just replaced my first lamp socket..have always been afraid of electricity...tried to follow youtube instructions but was a little put off that the first instruction was not..unplug the lamp, although I knew that...and never understood what the electrical tape was for. However, your warning about how to to connect the wires was great. Thank you!

"by the book"
**IMPORTANT** It does matter which wire goes to which terminal. On the cord, the wire with the ribbed casing is neutral and should be connected to the silver terminal. The other wire is hot and should be connected to the gold terminal. If you swap them the light will still work but this increases the chance of electrocution. If you consider the anatomy of a light bulb you'll notice there are 2 metal contact points. One for neutral (the threading) and one for hot (the tip). If you wire the socket incorrectly you're electrifying the inner threading which can accidentally be touched. Say you're changing a light bulb. It's partially out and you grip the base touching the metal threading of the bulb....BANG you're electrocuted.

Not to mention only the hot wire terminal of the socket is switched, the neutral terminal is always connected to the threads. If you wire it backwards, the threads will be at line voltage, even if the lamp is switched off! Unbelievably irresponsible video.

This video is so full of errors it's ridiculous. For safety, the first thing he should've mentioned is disconnecting the lamp from the power. I know it seems obvious, but it should be yelled from the rooftops for beginners. Also, he uses two tools he doesn't mention as needing (clippers and a wire stripper). He also mentions that it's a 3-way socket meant for dimmable bulbs, which is wrong. 3 way bulbs are electrically different from dimmable bulbs. The sockets are wired different. Sure you can plug a 3-way bulb in a dimmer socket and vice versa, but they won't function as expected.

Thank you Dave. The process is more simple than I thought it would be.
Thank you for the educational video Mr Geeting. I now have a working lamp , thanks to you sir.
Great video! Very well detailed and explained. I had my lamp socket repaired in 10 minutes. Thank you!
Thanks Dave for the video. It looks simple enough to replace the socket rather than buying a new lamp. Everyone's comments about the placement of the wires is help too!
I'm thankful for this video. My mom bought me a lamp and it wouldn't turn on anymore so I bought the part and was able to fix it today. I am so happy. You can do dang near anything compliments of the videos out there nowadays. The presentation of this video was simple and so easy to follow! Thank you so much.
This was just the refresher I needed to replace a chain switch to a one way switch that you used. One suggestion: mention the wire cutters in the tools needed. Thanks, Great tutorial!
Thank you! So easy and your directions were a lifesaver! I’m happy to say I have my old lamp back in working order 😊
I love that your directives were short & sweet. I fixed my lamp, thank you
Thank you for making this so quick and easy to understand. It was perfect and I replaced mine with no problems.
Best video I have seen! No fancy/distracting music, closeups when needed, short and to the point. Thank you!!
Thanks. Your vid is quick and to the point without a lot of chatter.
Simple and to the point. I rescued a broken lamp from my alley and now it has a new socket and a new home. Thanks!!
very helpful brother!! well done. i did it. i changed my lamp switch. was clueless until i watched your video. thanks
Thank you for the clear instructions. I will be fixing this lamp, which was a wedding present, rather than having to throw it out. Much obliged.
Thank you for the great video! You gave very clear instructions which gave me the confidence to tackle this project myself. I was able to fix my lamp for less than $6 rather than having to pay the lamp shop to fix it for a lot more.
First, thanks so much for the info. Did not have to disassemble the whole floor lamp, just replace the top of the socket. Be aware you should take the old parts with you to get the new socket, as it turns out there are numerous possible combos. If in doubt, consult with a person whose department it is in the hardware store. Also, a good tip is to use the small parts of the old wire that was cut off to test the correct size cutting hole in the wire-stripper tool for stripping the wire ends. You don't want to cut the copper wire inside. Worked great.
This was the best explained video I watched and enabled me to fix my lamp. Thank you!
Great video! Easy to understand and step by step instructions. Can't ask for more!
Wish I'd watched this before I dismantled the thing. Great video Dave
This was the best video out there from start to finish. Others don’t even show you how to take the socket out. Thank you lamp is not working.
Just found this video, very helpful in my circumstance!! I appreciate your brevity. Thank you for posting this!!
Fixed 2 of my Mom's lamps that were not functioning for months. I was going to take it to a small appliance repair shop but after they said had no idea what the cost could be to fix it as they ramped up to price gouge me, I figured I'd look on youtube and try myself. Fixed and Done due to this video. THANKS!
Beautiful lamp! Thanks David--there's no school like the old school. You are a ray of light in this disposable world where no one knows how to do this anymore. You are an everyday genius!
Thank You so much for sharing the method of replacing the lamp socket. It’s Great 👍
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. I have a lamp with a 3-way switch that went bad. I rewired it and got shocked when I tested it (so obviously a problem here!). I just went to Home Depot and got a switch like the one you show and followed your instructions. Works perfectly!
Great video David! Just bought a hurricane lamp two weeks ago and yesterday, I was in the dark as it just stopped working annnnnnd instead of a switch, it had a little turn key which fell out after turning a few times. I figure I loosened it. Hope it works with new socket. I kept turning it because I was in shock that it already broke... but gonna try to fix it with your video. Thanks again for being kind enough to post it.
This video is 11 years old. This is just what I needed. Thank you!
Saved from buying new lamp! Thank you!
Thank you Dave for taking the time to help us. You were clear with your instructions and I changed my lamp!
Muchas gracias David "Dave"; now I'll follow your guidance, you're helping me to save money which is to scarce to me!
Thank you so much. I did it! How fun. Your instructions were very clear and easy to follow.
David, that was a big help! Very clear instructions and camera work (so much more appreciated than the "instructional" videos with an ever-moving hand-held camera). Thanks, again.
Finally at the age of 79 I know how to change my light sockets !! Great clear video , easy to follow and complete the job. Thank you !
Thanks - This was an easy process and only cost me a few bucks and about 10 minutes!!
Thank you for this!! I recently purchased a gorgeous lamp but needs a new socket ❤️❤️
Just needed one quick tip on one part of the process, and there it was; thanks buddy!
Great video. Nice demonstration and you spoke very clearly.
Thanks for the help. I'm a PhD who can talk all day about conceptual things but objects with switches, electricity, or gasoline give me tremors. Thanks for a clear explanation and visual help and making it simple. You even sound like you might be from the very hills and hollers of Appalachia where I serve, so that was a bonus!
Thank you for your concise video and clear instructions. I thought I'd have to take my lamp in for repair; instead, I spent about $4 on a new socket and did it myself. Now my lamp is working again and I've learned something new.
Good video, just fixed a valuable decorative lamp that was a gift from my mom about 27 years ago before she passed away.
Thank u David!!! Going to be fixing my Mama’s old lamp!! Yay!! Wasn’t gonna throw it out!!!

How to fix the whole lamp
Very helpful, Dave. Thanks for holding the camera still and NOT playing music.
Thank you I’ve been wanting to do this for a year. Yay I have my lamp back
Thank you!!!! I've been looking all over for a lamp repair person to no avail. I have three beautiful lamps that are broken, but I didn't want to dump them. This looks so easy, that even someone like me who doesn't even know how to use tools can do. I thank you again kind sir.....this is my tomorrow project.
Thanks David. We are neighbors! I'm in Ventura. Take care buddy.
I just fixed a lamp 😃 Super grateful for your help!
Thanks, David! Super Helpful. Brilliant!
Just fixed a lamp that’s been broken for monthssss. Thank you so much lamp guy!
Thank you so much for your extremely clear instructions!
Great instruction. lightning struck my wall lamp and it would be almost impossible to find another like it. so this will fix the problem. thank you so much.
Excellent brief tutorial. I was able to switch out my lamp with no problem whatsoever.
You helped me today and thank you - I know you know a lot and you are doing a good job sharing your knowledge
Thanks for sharing that information. I replaced a lamp socket without any issues. I didn't need the needle nose pliers because the wires were already cut. My first DIY on an electrical equipment.
Wow, this was an easy fix! Much less expensive than throwing out a lamp, when a $4.95 piece will fix it! Thank you for the simple to follow video. The only difficult part was separating the original socket from it's crimped into base. After that it was not difficult. Haha, my husband watched in awe!

Can not get the socket out
Thank you - an electrical firm quoted me £35 per lamp to rewire! I have now done it myself following your instructions for a total of £7.50 - the cost of two new lampholders!
Thanks for the help, Dave!
Very clear guide on how to change lamp socket! You are a great teacher.. Thanks
Thank you for the easy to follow video! Was able to save a lamp that I didn't want to get rid of. Also if adults need to be told to unplug an appliance before doing anything electrical, they've got bigger problems.
Thank you David. That was awesome and a huge help.
Gosh! Thanks, Alzorama. This is the first KZread comment I ever left and to think I got a polite, thoughtful reply blows me away. Hope you're project went smoothly.
Excellent, easy to follow instructions that made it possible for even a duffer like me to replace a socket! Thanks.
Thank you David...great video and easy to understand.
Thank you so much for posting this video! Your demonstration was very thorough and easy to follow. I'll be replacing my broken socket tomorrow. Thanks again for your help!
Thank you! I like your approach: much like talking to a training apprentice than being a showman on KZread.
Thank you so very much! Very clear, concise and to the point! Off to the hardware store to save my lamp! Thanks from Goleta!❤️
This wasn't rocket science but it did have a couple helpful tips and made the job go a lot faster, especially for someone like me who only has to replace a socket once every 2 - 3 years.
I do not find rsbdirect comment to be accurate. I just replaced the socket in two lamps and the wires and screws were the same color. This video was super helpful. Thank you!
Thank you, yes, it did. No worries about burning down the house now. Plus, my daughter is happy because she really likes the lamp. And thank YOU for your kind words. :)
It’s going to help me change a socket in a used lamp I purchased at an auction. Thank you
I did it and my lamp is like new. Thanks so much David! Your directions were exact and easy.
My 13 year old son and I just fixed our lamp- thanks so much!
Lamp fixed , thank you for sharing !
This is my summer project! I think I will follow this video and try to fix one of my favorite lamps and save the set!!
hello mr. i now live in korea and through this video, i think i can solve my problem. thank you
Thank you for the video. Very easy to follow. It helped me prepare some lamps from a thrift store that I need to use for my environmental science student.
You are awesome! God Bless, this is my project for tomorrow
Thanks so much. I have been buying some mid century lamps and many of them are "hinky" when you try to turn them on so I figured I would need to have the sockets replaced. I was looking for a lamp repair store and stumbled across your video. So easy, I know even I could do it! Thanks again for the video.
THANK YOU!!!! I just fixed 2 lamps I had given up on. I wish I had found you years ago!
David, Sir, Thanks very much for your to the point instructions, greatly appreciated!!! 👍🏻😁
Very clear instructions. You light up my world, Dave! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I have a faulty 3 way socket too. Easy instructions👌🏼
Thanks for sharing this video with us. I had a pretty good idea how to...but you put the true "know how" into play!!! 👍
Very clear instructions, it gave me that much more confidence to fix things myself.
well I'm gonna try it. even with his errors I think his demo is very helpful. my old 3-way socket has a hinge door bottom, no screws. it did not wiggle out of the crimping, had to brute force pull it out of the crimp by grabbing the innards of the socket. no smooth or ridged wires that I can see, just 2 folded up black coated copper wires that look the same. these are wall-mounted lamps from the 1990s, maybe the 1980s. The plug is polarized but the "bigger" prong is barely bigger than the smaller prong.
Excellent video!!! Helped me a lot. I think the "bow" is called a "harp", though....
Thank you so much~ great directions! I just replaced my first lamp socket, and it worked!
Very helpful! Thanks for posting!
thanks for giving me a daddy moment. I used to watch my dad fix all kinds of things around the house and be amazed. I know its a small thing to do but you made it simple and easy. thanks
Excellent instructions! Thank you.
