Puerto Rican migration to Hawaii - @DeanHuertas - TikTok

For many Puerto Ricans that struggle with their identity, it is because they don’t know their history and haven’t tapped into learning about our roots! We are Puerto Rican no matter where we are born 🙏🏽

I come from Puerto Rican immigrants 1900 one of the first waves. My family kept music and food alive. My grandfather, in his old age with dementia still played his Güiro and sang old Spanish songs. He spoke fluent Spanish in his dementia years, and when I asked a few friends from PR that said his Spanish pronunciation was 👌🏽 I guess it all came back to him from his parents and grandparents. It's not easy for a culture to survive, integrate and thrive amidst a whole new environment with multiple cultures. But Hawaii Puerto Ricans were a strong tenacious bunch that held on to to their roots. They went through a lot on the plantations but they persevered. Pretty much everyone in Hawaii knows Pasteles, arroz con gondules, ensalada de bacalao, tostones, guineos en escabeche. We love our salsa and merengue we kanikapila Hawaii style Puerto Rican music at gatherings. One day I hope to visit Puerto Rico. One thing, though, they did not come with the coqui. The coqui came only maybe 24 years ago. Hitched a ride on some plants from PR. The Coqui found us 😄

CHEQUEA ... En un libro de recetas hawaiianas en inglés incluyen: PASTELES is a favorite in Hawaii, Puerto Rican local style Pasteles. Enjoy!

that was 1902 and you forgot to mention the hurricane that decimated the island just before this migration happened. Hurikán (the spirit of the big winds, aka the Hurricane) features prominently in Taino myth because it's the force of nature that governs many aspects of our lives and forces change, whether we like it or not.

We migrated early 1900’s after a Hurricane our King invited farmers in hopes to discourage America’s taste in us..we did not bring the Coqui frog to Hawaii they were not here until late 90’s and that was from a shipment from elsewhere. We fought along native Hawaiians against the over throw of our country, Borikens had to fight for their to vote in the 1960’s we were not acknowledged as American or having rights as one even tho we were already here for about 50 years or more prior to coming a state. On the way to California a lot of us were beaten starved on the train treated like absolute trash. And although we were not viewed as American Citizens we were drafted in the war. You’ll mostly find Portuguese/Puertoricans in Hawaii like myself which is hilarious because it’s almost the same geno.. If you’re boriken from Hawai’i don’t take a DNA test especially if your other side is suppose to be Portuguese.. you’re basically just almost all Latino 😂 it’s so confusing unless you know all of your families surnames! Even then! But thanks to this braddah I’ll get a Hawaiian tribal I always felt it was Tabu if not Native but hey if he can I can! I give Tutu Pele and other gods offerings all the time❤️

Hawaii is still occupied. There was no treaty. U.S. signed a joint resolution, that was not a treaty. Under international law, what the U.S. did was an illegal act because Hawaii was already a sovereign nation. However, for Puerto their story is very different. Puerto Ricans did not secure independence like what The Hawaiian Kingdom did on Nov. 28 1893. So, apparently Puerto Rico was colonized whereas Hawaii continues to be illegally occupied by the U.S. for about 129 years.
