Ptolus : How to Get Started City/Urban Campaign for GMs & Players

Ойындар

After running a campaign in Monte Cook's Ptolus : City by the Spire since 2017, I wanted to give you some advice on how to start your game in this huge, urban metropolis.
First, you need the book. Second, you need my website! ptol.us/
I built a mobile friendly version of the book, and an interactive map with ALL the City's locations on it.
Player's Guide to Ptolus: ptol.us/a-players-guide-to-pt...
You can download the PDF, or read the entire contents in a mobile friendly format on your phone/tablet/device.
My #1 Advice for DMs/GMs and Players unfamiliar with Ptolus: Start the campaign with the PCs not knowing much of anything about Ptolus. Start them as outsiders to the City by the Spire and let them learn as you move through the city for the first time.

I play the main character, Vogh Kath, in his play by post game. I must say that the city as he describes is like nothing I have ever experienced before in my over 30 years of playing. I started out at level 5 and am now level 11 and haven't even done a whole lot in the actual city. There are so many different things to do, own a house, delve, fight crime, do the pre-made modules, own a business. Your imagination is the only thing that will hold you back.

Ha! Exactly! You could run several campaigns in this city and the PCs could potentially never even meet one another. :D

I actually found your website before this channel. I've been gaming since 1982, we recently switched to Pathfinder. My best friend is currently running Savage Tides from Paizo and I'm up to run when he is finished. I bought Ptolus right after it came out but haven't played in it much. Group instability mostly. We have a solid group now, so I'm writing a campaign as my Magnus opus. Looking forward to your content and registering on your site tomorrow. Very impressed so far

That's very cool! I haven't been playing quite that long 😃 but some of my players are close. Keep us updated on your campaign. We all love hearing about other people's games

Thanks! This is great information to get a group interested in the setting. Does the book include multiple adventure hooks to get players into the city, or is there a section that describes how to slowly introduce aspects like the laws, the politics, the day-today living, etc. of the city? It seems like it could be easily overwhelming for the unprepared. This is, of course, assuming everyone has read the player's guide.

There are TONS of adventure hooks in the book, but no real advice on slowly introducing everything. If you follow my advice from the video to make your PCs be from outside the city, then a city watch guard letting them in could give a cliff notes view of the laws. They could also hand them a pamphlet with an overview to keep them out of trouble. I did it kind of peace meal as things came up.

I don't mind magic items being for sale. Just throw tougher enemies at them, either monsters or npc's with equally powerful magic items. Removing them from the game is a less fun option in my opinion.

i'm not sure what the issue is with using the Ptolus PDF. The PDF is hyperlinked and bookmarked and searchable. Unless you are actually trying to GM with only a phone? I honestly can't imagine doing that. If I'm going to GM I assume that responsibility would be to run it on at least a tablet if not a computer.

Not sure what you mean? Do you mean people shouldn't need my website or what? I run a LOT from my phone and seraching on the site is typically easier than the PDF for me. That's why I built it. haha. That and the map.

@@D20Pub Oh no, your site is a valuable tool no matter what. I meant literally I couldn't imagine runnign a game from my phone only. Not only do I run everything from a computer but I usualy have multiple screens. For instance if I'm running on Roll20 I need that r20 window open, as well as my notes, and discord for voice. I can't imagine how i'd do that with only one phone screen. Certainly more power to those who can do this.

@@shadomain7918 Oh. Ha. For sure. Yeah, I'm an uber-nerd and I have 5 monitors on my computer. You cannot have too much screen real estate. I might clean my office some day and show off my setup to you folks. I typically read on my phone or a tablet, and then sometimes I do write my play by post content on the phone as well, but nothing beats big monitors and full keyboards!

@@D20Pub Yeah. My Ptolus campaign is 14 months old and probably only half way through. I love the setting, even at 674 pages there's tons of room to add and modify to make it your own. I've seen your channel mentioned on the Ptolus channel on the CU server, so hopefully you'll continue growing.

@@shadomain7918 Oh heck yeah! We've been runnning this campaign since 2017 and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of what Ptolus offers. We've completed all of the Chapter 33 adventures, all of Night of Dissolution, all of The Banewarrens and even after all these years, there is still so much more! Monte Cook did awesome with this content! :D
