Sir i just started my pt after a year of sitting on the drive, following countless excuses from garages about why it can’t be fixed! Its now got new valves new head gasket and is purring like a kitten! All thanks to your superb video. I seriously cannot thank you enough.. 🙏

I'm in the middle of this repair and getting close to the end. Thank you for your comprehensive and common sense video. I probably would have sold the car or paid an enormous amount of cash to have someone else do the job! My experience with this type of repair is limited. I used to work in the collision repair trade but haven't gotten this deep into an engine in a very long time. Your doing good work and helping more people than you realize. Putting the internet and KZread to use the way it was intended.Thanks so much! You should be getting paid for this type of information.

Update: After final assembly and checking installation the engine fired up and ran. Surging idle speeds indicated a problem. At the time I hadn't realized that the timing jumped 180 degrees on the intake cam due to a weak tension pulley! Replace it when you are there. Don't skip this important step! Chrysler retro fit kit was the best option for correct fit and price. After a tear down to the cam sprockets , reassembly and a compression test to insure no valve or piston damage the repair is complete. Running great! 800 miles and no problems. Thanks again for this great series of videos.

The head R&R on these cars is a real pain. These are one my most dreaded timing belt replacements too.You did it all like a pro. Good work Will.

I just picked up a 2007 PT Cruiser which is experiencing the same symptoms as your 2001 except my misfire is from cylinder 4. With the help of your clear and concise explanations I'm comfortable digging deeper to attempt to diagnose this misfire. I'm at the compression check point in the progress and I'm pretty much expecting to find out the same thing you did. 6 years newer but still the same issues? Cmon Chrysler engineers get in the game! Although this video is 7 years old, it's the gift that keeps on giving! Matt, I followed your video to do a head gasket on my 2007 PT Cruiser (cleaned and lapped the valves and replaced all the gaskets while everything was open) and she came out on the other end purring like a kitten! I found that removing the head light allow so much room not only to see but to access mounting bolts for upper bracket, but so many more. Great video.

I just watched all three parts. My PT cruiser is having a misfire in cylinder three and we've done the tune up and ignition coil without success. Your videos gave me an idea of where to look next. I hope I can get my back up to speed like yours! Thank you for sharing!!!!!

All 3 videos were very educated. I also have a misfire in Cylinder #2 on a 2001 pt cruiser which the reading code PO302. I change the sparkplugs, wires, and coil. I guess this is the next step after watching all your 3 videos. Thank you

You sir are a master....I have done a few heads in my time but on the PT i think i would just close the bonnet lmao. This is my first PT i got it because it reminds me of the old ford pop and aged 47 i am in mid life crisis mode with not much money lol ...Its a 2005 .....2.4 with 69.000 on the clock and thank god the head is good i hope....How ever it will need a new cambelt in 5000 more miles so it was just what i needed to watch you install a new one....It does have a couple of problems however ....One easy fix is it needs a new break master cylinder...Some times it will not start i have to back the key off then let the petrol pump click off then it will start ....Maybe they are all a bit like that...The other problem is its kind of hard to drive at low revs. ..It kind of jerks a bit at low revs like a learner driver. Not massive just a little bit so as to notice it ...Clutch is good and so are drive shafts...Some one said it may be the egr sticking or the throttle response thats dirty. Both of them i am at a loss with as all the engines i worked on were old classic cars lol ...I am going to get a scanner to see if it gives me any codes or see if there is a tiny misfire....Keep the good work up fantastic to watch you put the old girl back on the road.

I finally got my motor back together thanks to your video that included all of the torque specification since my book has been missing for a while. Motors fired up and I’m super stoked thanks again for putting a very thorough video out there!

thank you, yes i did consider it however i opted out just going with my gut instinct, i know that sounds bad however the head looked clean well maintained, i use gas to check if the valve seats are leaking, just put some gas in the port and watch for a leak, all looked well, so i went with that, i also had some worries there may be more damage beyond what i could see to the block, not to mention time and extra expense, hope that helps, hahaha yea i have my moment its hard not to thank got for editing

thank you so much man for this video, I'm currently doing the same job you just did for a friend who has the same car, your video is helping me heaps, I havn't finished yet, currently the cylinder head in the shop being repaired, the engine died on my friend and when the boys at the shop so the head they said there is no cracks but she blew the whole set of the ex valves. once the head is repaired I will be putting it all back together, wish me luck it is not as easy at it looks

I was wondering if you might have any plans to make a video on changing lower intake manifold gaskets on the 3.4 engine found in the Montanas? There are a lot of people who how to do it becasue so many were screwed over by having the gaskets deteriate and mixing water with oil. great video..but just want to add ..fyi.. extention does not affect the torque...BUT..what does affect your torque reading is when you use a (for eg.) a crow foot wrench which makes your torque wrench longer ...then that is when that formula comes into affect..

Thanks so much for all this info.I bought a pt as while back it seemed to be running OK but when I checked the coolant .I was shock to find out I had to add a full bottle! I was going to change the timing belt as it has 200000 k\m s. But it has had a little stumble at idle when the air conditioner kicks in. So I will do your head test first.

I am an aircraft mechanic, not a car mechanic, but loves for the video. Just one thing, you can put a mile of extensions without recalculating torque. The only time you have to recalculate torque, is when you use an offset driver of some sort, but even then no recalculation is required if you use it at a 90 degree offset.

Thanks for posting these vids. I have a PT that is causing me grief now because it is overheating due, I think, to the fact that coolant is not being drawn back from the resevoir. It just keeps filling and then leaking out the overflow tube. I've repaced the rad, thermostat, hoses, fan, fan relays. Plus I've blown out the hose to the resevior and checked the tank for leaks. I think originally the low speed fan control wasn't working and maybe warped or cracked the gasket or the head due to overheating. In any event, it goes in tomorrow for compression and leak down diagnosis cause I give up.

I use a beam style torque wrench for the last step.. then it's easy to see if a bolt is over stretched as the torque value will start to drop.

Excellent video series. Very well explained and documented.

You mentioned extension use and a formula and it's true, but only if you are extending the length of the ratchet handle, a socket extension doesn't matter. I did a lot of reading on the subject not too long ago. I always thought that you had to increase or decrease when using an extension too, but it just ain't so....look it up. The wiki is a good place to start for fairly good info. I had no idea.

I get the impression that a blown head gasket is an all too common problem on a lot of these little cars . Has it been your experience that overheating is often / usually part of what preceded the blown head gasket ? Is it more common with the 4 cylinders than a V-6 ? Back in the day , of iron V-8's , blown head gaskets did not seem to be that common . Maybe drivers took better care of their cars & overheating was less common ? Excellent video, quality all around is up there with the best. Did you use a special tool to torque down the crank damper bolt? My book recommends Special Toll 6792. In my 03 Turbo PT, I believe my leak is in the heater core because there is virtually no coolant coming from the engine, but rather from the evaporator box drain tube...I understand they share the same drain. Compression check was ok as well as the cylinder leak down test. This engine setup is the biggest headache I've ever worked on.

I was able to get the head off my cruiser. Used a hoist and pulled the head manifold and catalytic all at once. Got the head milled for 40 bucks. But my gosh it’s a pain in the butt!!!

Fixing my neighbors cruiser and I am about to have to do this. Thnks for all the help!

yea you can say that again its one of the best feelings, the unknown feeling just prior to cranking over for the first time after a major repair is like no other, that's why i go over over each critical step, double check, i have been bit in the past by pushing to far to fast and missing something along the way, i would like to believe i have learned along the way haha feel pretty confident however you just never know thanks again

Great video! Can you tell me what are the Cylinder Head re-torque spec for a 2014 Jeep Patriot 2.4L? I need to replace a blown cylinder gasket and I cannot find the re-torque spec.

Good job man but there's no way I could just replace the head. I'd remove the entire engine and check and clean everything and while its out replace the everything, including the alternator and water pump, all the cooling and heater hoses and anything else that needs attention.

Step- by- step videos are the way it should be done .

Facinating video on the PT Cruiser. I have one that has the same symptoms but so far undiagnosed. What would it cost to have done what you did? 2001 w/60000 miles. Maybe deciding to get rid of it.

You don't think an assembly lube should be used on the cam bearings???

I did the timing belt on my pt cruiser some time age that metal bracket on the passenger side was a bitch to get out lol

I got an 05 Sebring with the same size engine, and I was just wondering if, due to the complex process of replacing the parts shown in the video, wouldn't it be better to just take the motor out of the car first and then make the repairs on a work bench?

thank you for the compliment, had to take some time off due to many reasons mostly darn cross roads in life :/ missed every one on here and all the interaction that goes along with it, sincerely. Will be posting videos again shortly, just had to pick a direction, finally gaining momentum again lol I have a nice little project coming up I'm hoping to document, it's a Chevy S10 4.3 v6 vortec conversation to small block 5.7 350 keeping all emissions and ecm control should be interesting

mine has no compression on 3.. I watched the 1st 2 and was like oh mine might be different. While I have not yet pulled the head, my test were EXACT! I did head gasket on 2 neons (one SHOC and one DHOC) how much difference would you say from this? That wishbone thing looks fun. I do computers but always work on my own..

It's alive! Great job. Little hesitation on the throttle or is that engine like that?

i wouldnt wish this one on anyone however it was well worth it runs great now gets real good millage im happy with it well the other half is lol this job can range i would say starting around 1,200 up depending on parts new or used head could easily go triple that fast

Hello my friend. i have a jeep wrangler 2.4L 2004, its the same engine as the video, only the ubication of the elements its diferent. Time behind the car is overheated, throwing bubbles through the radiator, the head gasket is damaged. Recently the change was made, following the steps of the manual, but when starting, the car does not hold the idle, and after a while, it has bubbled through the radiator again. Watching this video I see that the steps that I did to make the change were based on the manual and this video confirms that what I did is compliant, but the car is not working well. I need help to do the repair again. You can help me?

Did you check to see if the head was warped ? Did you check to see if the top of the block was warped ? Where it mates with the head ? Best wishes , :-) Wyr God bless

i have a 1990 chevy k1500 when i go to start the truck i have to wait for the oil pressure to build up to 30 or 45 psi then it starts up when do you think this is note i have a brand new fule pump relay

Why use a harmonic balancer to torque the main pulley? Just keep the car in park (ATX) or first gear (MTX) then the weight of the car will stop the crank from turning.
