Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta was a leading Sarod maestro. Born in 1933 in Bhagalpur, he started training in music under the guidance of the legendary Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra. A veteran performer in major musical and cultural festivals, Pandit Dasgupta was bestowed with honours including the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award in 2012 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Tagore Akademi Ratna in 2011. He shone in his studies and successfully completed his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. Known for high standards of rigour and aesthetics Pandit Dasgupta left a healthy legacy of noteworthy players in Debashish Bhattacharya, Prattyush Banerjee, his own son Anirban Dasgupta, Abir Hossain and Soumik Datta (all sarod players) and the sitarists Sugato Nag and Nayan Ghosh. Dasgupta was a Guru at ITC Sangeet Research Academy’s Instrumental Division since 2002 and a member of the Experts Committee. Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta passed away in 2018.
