    It looks great. However, after all that stuff has been added, I wonder about the total weight of the cockpit section on the actuators, (and then the total system on top of the surge section itself). I think one would fallow "race car" practice to ensure that any "sprung weight" is kept as low as possible to make the most of the limited "G force" simulation acceleration in any direction that the actuators can provide.

Haha great video as always, it's great to see all these new motion systems and direct drive systems being developed and improved, and reducing cost enough to make them more accessible to consumers. It's still an expensive hobby but I bought my first DD this year, a Fanatec DD2, and now a full motion rig may actually be achievable some day. No longer a $30k fantasy!

    Brilliant set up (and video as per usual) but can it be made better? Let's drop the swivel pin at the front. Replace with a second traction loss actuator (installed opposite side to rear traction loss thus same actuator movement as rear for understeer or oversteer) and thus achieve the front as well as rear traction loss. The system can handle one more actuator so should work if software can deal with it, which I presume it can. Any thoughts on this from you sim brainiacs?

    Do you have a car-track combo suggestion to test out that weightlessness feeling you get sometimes when driving over a hump just right? Has any of the motion systems you've tested so far been capable of achieving that? I'm guessing Laguna Seca Corkscrew would be a pretty fun test at least (don't know if it gives that feeling though) I would also love to see something like old Monza oval as part of the motion test bench for the really bumpy banked straights and turns. It would also be cool to see a video comparing the motion algorithms from the different software out there and how they handle things differently.

    It would not be smart to do this, especially as D-Box is suffering as a result of the Covid pandemic where commercial locations that make up big parts of their business are also struggling. I think that's why we have seen the unusually large price reductions of late. If you want a mature 'plug and play' motion solution, and have the very deep pockets to fund a similarly configured D-Box build, then D-Box is the way to go. If you don't mind a more DIY approach with software that is more 'enthusiast' focused with deep adjustability, then this PT solution can't be beat on value for money and D-Box cannot compete even closely in price. At least not yet. You can build a 4 actuator PT-based solution for far less than half the price of the D-Box 4 actuator solution, and will get actuators that have far greater stroke range, which would increase that price delta as the 150mm stroke D-Box solution is close to new car prices. If you have $20K+ to build something, then D-Box is a great option, but if you want to build a very similar solution using PT, then you could invest that difference in many other things, or just save it!

  • @traind

    @traind

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Globespy Barry did a review of the new 4 actuator DBox.... the price is now half what it was. $9,000 will get you what used to cost $17 or 18,000 USD. Still a huge amount of money for sure. I am curious though about the precision and quality of the 4 actuator DBox vs. the less expensive solutions like this one. Clearly, PT gives you more functionality for less money but sometimes spending nore actually gets you higher quality. I am not sure if Dbox, even with the price cut, is worth the extra money vs. the newer market entrants.

    This is an old post but I have a good insight into this; I’m a simulator engineer for an F1 team and know a fair bit about motion cueing. My feeling is that a motion system like the one in this video would probably be actively harmful for driver training. At the very least, a lot of the motion cues I can see being used are precisely the opposite of what we would cue. And in particular, the yaw cuing is by far the most important for actual driver feel because that can give the feel of under/oversteer.

    @@karoo_bushman6880 good point. There are also lots of partial truths in this industry... ;-) The problem of motion representation is also very relative. 4 post systems try to synthesize multiple motion layers, usually from the relative point of the driver (G-forces experienced) So when you brake the vehicle pitches forward to indicate g-force, but it also pitches forward because of front spring compression. Both motion layers are overlayed on one another and doing two things. One is relative to the car; spring compression and the other is relative to the driver G-force. in a 5 or 6 DOF system with surge for example, its always better to give each actuator or axis a particular function. so that an F1 car doesn't feel like a boat trying to represent the high braking g-forces. its tricky. ;-)

    it does not. they usually recommend but kickers, but given its an open community, I am sure they can add it. problem with tactile feedback is that it kills ball screws and actuators, hence you "need" quality parts, high frequency 50hz or more vibrations (like engine vibration) can ultimately pit the screws. D-BOX sources good ball screws but if look up the price of ball screws they are expensive for a reason. The chinese ones are a lot less, also for a reason, but I think in this application it might not apply as much as others.

  • @IntrepidRacer13

    @IntrepidRacer13

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@tronicgr Transducers add more than just road feel though. While it's true 4+ corner transducers may not be necessary with a 5DOF platform, I would imagine that there are still a large number of output channels that the motion platform isn't picking up or simply can't relay quickly enough. Each level down of motion is having to move more and more weight which naturally means it's ability to reach it's peak frequency. The information I have found regarding the frequency of this controller, which by the way is FAR too difficult to track down, is 1000Hz, which puts it right around the place of a midrange, and while that will be what is going to the actuator, there is going to be inherent loss as those actuators try to move that mass of the rig to match. A tactile transducer has a frequency range of 5-200Hz, which will get much lower frequencies than the PT actuators, with the added benefit of being able to mount directly to the seat or seat brackets, meaning that vibrations within the car will be felt. Things like gear shifts, engine speed, and numerous other channels that simply can't be replicated by higher frequency ranges will be felt and add to the immersive experience. It would also allow for more headroom across the system. By adding motion you reduce the amount of information the wheel needs to send you in an effort to compensate for a lack of feel, if you add transducers you reduce the amount of information needing to be sent to the motion platform. All of this means information and details are more isolated and as a result much clearer. I'm not saying the motion isn't already very communicative of what is going on with the car and the track, but there are still things that other solutions can improve upon.

    You tell maybe to disdable sway in your video But then in long sweeping corners like the Parabolica on Monza sway neutralise roll so your car Goes down where the load is Example: when you disable sway and you go to turn 3 on Monza and stop there and put your right wheel on the highest curb then your front right Goes up, But when you go trough the parabolica corner Your chassis is going right side up and that is wrong! Therefore you must turn sway on because that corrects the roll so that when you go trough a corner the outside chassis dives Maybe i’am wrong because i use a other control system ( SFX-100 systeem with Simfeedback ) correct me then :-)

    seen from experience with some actuators that small dithering movements can cause the seals to dry up inside the body and along the fescalised portion causing the seals to wear out prematurely in turn causing a leak.

    i think if a product does its job and isn't a complete failure its classed as good and he leaves it up to the end user to make their decisions on which is better for them.. But i think its clear this system is better than dbox. For starters.. 250mm/s vs 100mm/s travel is masive

    @@peacemakermotion3949 I think you're not taking into account / have not felt the transducer effects of D-box which the other systems can't replicate. The extra speed of travel should be noticeable when crashing into a wall or bouncing at the bottom of a jump but not too sure at what other time a cars suspension will travel more than 10cm in 1 second, however Barry does know as he has tried all systems and it would be good to hear his thoughts.

    @@ultimaevo77 suspension does that all the time, even more. 10cm in a second doesn't necessarily mean in one direction. going over a few bumps in the road the suspension can move up and down like 4 times in a second. so if your suspension travels up and down 3cm each way. thats 24cm of travel in a second. couple that with 10,000 Counts per revolution on the encoder/motor and you have excellent fidelity. something a transducer wishes it could replicate. Dont get me wrong, they help make up for the short fall in speed and work well in doing so but its a whole other level if you ask me.

    honestly i would expect that this product, at such price point, would work out of the box with its own software without having to fiddle so much with external plugins/apps/softwares. Just my point of view however, feel free to disagree..

    If you want plug and play, dbox is your answer, but they don't even make a comparable solution. If you decide to go with a dbox with 6" of stroke for just the four uprights you'd be looking at spending $35-40,000.
