Psychoanalysis as Deconstruction Part 2.

Envy and aggression as grounded in a phantasy of lack, rationalized by Lacan instead of analyzed as phantasy.

Hi Don, I follow you in your scepticism about CBT and the DSM framework and in your belief in the truths revealed by psychoanalysis, but I'm just curious to hear your own reasons for viewing the CBT/DSM way of looking at things is misguided. Is the only thing it gets wrong about the mind a misplaced reductionism, or are there some ways you believe it clashes with fundamental intuitions or facts either from common sense or science? Or is the debate between the CBT/DSM school of thought on the one hand and the psychoanalytic one on the other in the end pragmatic and decided by medical results? Thanks so much for these videos.

Well I think the categories are much more fluid and overlapping than DSM would suggest and the same goes for the Lacanian structures. I share with CBT a focus on false beliefs but, for me, these are largely unconscious phantasies in need of deconstruction.

I do not engage with DSM thinking so, for me, this is another characteristic of PS functioning.

I think the best metaphor is castration. Is the child castrated? Yes. But, is he really castrated? No. What about the boy’s early vision of the evidence of a castration, in a girl? These are difficult things for a boy to process. I would say that children lack the ability to pragmatically process metaphor. And as Freud said, this is central to the split ego.

I wanted to say one more thing, about the super ego. The deconstruction of the super ego is probably a deconstruction of a myth. The conscience carries a great myth in the id.

@@doncarveth to deconstruct we need to make what is unconscious conscious.
